From the young to the old, everyone takes missteps and gets things wrong sometimes or the other. ____16____ Here are three common mistakes young people make, and you can learn from them.
Not valuing time
Time is valuable, and it’s impossible to recover the time lost. Most young people know it but still, waste their precious time doing meaningless things. In today’s digital world, where too many distractions (使人分心的事物) surround you from notifications, or mail alerts, it’s already a struggle to keep up with your priorities (优先权) and do productive work.
____17____ Use it meaningfully to learn new things, acquire skills and increase your expertise so that you can grow and build yourself up for success.
Giving up too soon
Success doesn’t come overnight or with the snapping of fingers. ____18____ It requires you to practice self-discipline, work consistently and persevere (坚持).
You meet many difficulties and challenges on your journey to success. To be successful you have to train yourself to stay put in the face of problems and hardships. With commitment and dedication, it’s possible to find your way through the barriers.
Believing failure means it’s all over
____19____ Every path you take goes through some kind of failure. If you let failure take the best of you, you’ll never be able to bounce back and get on your feet again.
When you experience setbacks, instead of letting them shake your self-belief, focus on what went wrong and how you could have prevented it. Getting to the root cause helps you figure out what went wrong so that you don’t repeat the mistake.
Each time you meet with failure, learn from it, start with better preparations, and get into action again. ____20____
A. The only failure is not trying.
B. There’s no surefire way to succeed.
C. Understand and respect the value of time.
D. It’s believed that achieving any goal takes time and effort.
E. Life is purposeful when you spend it running after a worthwhile goal.
F. However, certain mistakes are typical of the youth and can cost them dearly.
G. Never let temporary roadblocks shake your confidence or doubt your ability to succeed.

Can you tell the difference between a glass of regular and diet soda 36 That's where the trouble starts. Until recently, everything we ate contained some amount of calories.
So when we drink diet soda, the sweetness tricks our body into thinking it's real sugar but when those energy-packed calories don't arrive, the insulin(胰岛素)in our brain has nothing to store.
37 It's called metabolic syndrome (代谢综合征),which is a mix of conditions that includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar and weight gain which can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and stroke (中风).
While drinking diet soda with the meal may sound like a tasty calorie free alternative to plain water, this may be the worse time to drink it because the cheating calories in the diet soda could finally destroy the real calories we metabolize. 38
Another problem could be the fact that artificial sweeteners in diet soda can be 10s to 100s of times sweeter than sugar. 39 It's like when you go to a party expecting loads of food and you end up with a handful of vegetables. You're left unsatisfied and hungry.
In the same way, artificial sweeteners can leave our brains wanting more, which leads to increased appetite and potential weight gain. 40 , maybe just stick to water.
A. Turns out, neither can your body
B. No, this was diet soda and it was awesome
C. When you go to a party expecting loads of food
D. That drinking diet soda is associated with a disease
E. So if you're drinking diet soda to drop a few pounds
F. And it potentially leaves extra calories behind we then store as fat
G. So when we taste it, our brains expect more calories than what we give it

Each summer, Craig Stihler and Jack Wallace, scientists for the state of West Virginia hike to Peacock Cave to count Virginia big-eared bats. ___36___. They want to see if the number of bats is going up or down.
I was there to learn about the bats for my book. After we arrived at the small entrance to Peacock Cave, Craig and Jack unpacked their equipment. Crale said, “___37___. Hibernating (冬眠) bats may be awakened and fly around and burn up the fat they’ve stored in their bodies. Without that food supply, they might not live until spring when they can eat insects again. And bat mothers may drop their babies.”
As night settled in,they set up a night-vision scope (观察仪器) . ___38___. They also set up a radio-like bat detector outside the cave. It picks up bat sounds that our ears can’t hear. For the next two hours, Craig counted the bats by speaking into a handheld voice recorder each time five bats flew out of the cave. By the time the last bat left the cave at about 10:30 p. m., Craig and Jack had counted 1,242 bats! ___39___. Craig explained that when the first count was taken at Peacock Cave in 1983, there were only 160 Virginia big-eared bats. Projects to help protect bats have helped the bats make a remarkable comeback. Today the total number of Virginia big-eared bats there are more than 25,000.
___40___. They will continue to need human’s help if they are going to survive into the future.
A. Why do they do so
B. It allows them to see the bats in darkness.
C. Virginia big-eared bats are medium-sized.
D. Bats are important because they eat insects.
E. They want to catch some bats for their research.
F. Bats living in caves can suffer if disturbed by people.
G. That was the most Craig and Jack had ever counted there.
