Self-control is the ability to regulate your responses in order to avoid undesirable behavior, increase desirable deeds, and achieve long-term goals. Possessing self-control is important. Whether your goal is to exercise regularly, earn a college degree, or get rid of bad habits, it is easy to believe that achieving a goal is simply a matter of controlling your behavior. In other words, common goals require self-control.
Fortunately, self-control can be both learned and strengthened. One way to avoid harmful behavior is to do something that gets your mind off it. Other methods include practicing using self-control, focusing on one goal at a time and reminding yourself of the consequences.
