Growing up in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles in the 1970s, Ghuan Featherstone only remembers riding a horse with his parents at a nearby park when he was eight years old.
But ever since, he’s been chasing that sense of freedom and power he felt on the horse that day. “I felt like I could conquer (征服) anything,” Featherstone, now 51, said in a Story Corps interview last month with Jordan Humphreys, a 13-year-old horseback rider. After serving in the Army for eight years, Featherstone remained determined to realize his childhood dream of becoming a cowboy.
When he returned to Los Angeles, he learned to ride at stables (马厩,马训场) known as “The Hill” in Compton. Riders there would jump on their horse backs and take their horses into the city streets. In 2012, a fire burned down The Hill. What had become a shelter for youth was suddenly gone. Sensing the void (空缺) after the fire, Featherstone opened his own stables, Urban Saddles, in 2019 to create a space where he could teach kids like Humphreys to care for and ride horses.
As a black man, Featherstone is against prejudice. People of color are often prevented from pop culture and historical representations of the cowboy. His stable has helped keep the cowboy lifestyle alive in the streets. “Riding through the streets on horseback has given me a way to connect with others in the community,” said Humphreys. “It makes them happy seeing us on a horse and then they may be smiling, and I believe that when we come through, we give them a sense of hope.” he added.
If there’s one lesson Featherstone hopes to convey to kids, it’s a respect for all life. “We’re respecting the animals and we’re respecting each other,” he said.

There’s a child — like joy that comes with ordering something online — whether it be clothes or kitchen stuffs. We sit anxiously refreshing the Postal Service or Express pages to see when our items will arrive, and we become overly excited, hopeful and anxious.
According to Owen O’Kane, a psychologist and writer, even the smallest positive future events can motivate us when we’re feeling down — especially during the pandemic, which has been filled with unexpected disappointments. Waiting for a parcel may not just represent an imagined positive future where you can control your needs for a book or toaster or shirt, making life feel more manageable, but can also serve as a temporary distraction from the boring life because it gives you something new to wake up to and get excited about.
However, people went into a frenzy when the Postal Service announced that its mail delivery would become permanently slower. And then, many became worried about their items arriving on time, appearing broken, or simply not living up to expectations. A delayed package may seem insignificant to some. But for others, getting your hopes up only for them to be thwarted is anxiety and angering. O’Kane says these reactions are natural, but telling about more deep-rooted internal issues in our lives that go beyond the delayed package. It’s really symbolic about something bigger, psychologically, about the need to control and needing everything to be perfect.
It’s important to practice self-care and treat yourself with occasional gifts. However, experts caution comfort shopping is only a temporary fix, which only helped you escape problems temporarily. “Shopping for and receiving an item is stimulating on some level, and also the most passive way to live,” O’Kane adds.
8. Why do we look forward to receiving packages based on the first two paragraphs
A. It makes life easy to manage. B. It gives us something positive to expect.
C. It distracts us from a better life. D. It helps us avoid unexpected disappointments.
9. What does the underlined phrase “went into a frenzy” probably mean
A. Canceled their orders. B. Stood sill to call for their parcels.
C. Got into a state of craziness. D. Ran into a postal service company.
10. What is O’Kane’s attitude toward people’s reactions to the delayed package
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Optimistic.. D. Positive.
11. What exactly does the writer want to say in the last paragraph
A. Find hope in your comfort shopping.
B. Never order and track something online.
C. Go shopping for and receiving items occasionally.
D. Live actively and take actions to solve problems for good.

Animal keepers use the term enrichment to describe the introduction of environmental stimuli into the surroundings of caged animals. In recent years, “environmental enrichment” also known as behavioral enrichment, providing animals with challenges, opportunities, and stimulation that are species-appropriate, has grown more popular in zoos and aquariums. A latest study does, however, identify potential to “diversify the enrichment types being supplied and the species being examined.”
The study conducted by the University of Exeter and Sparsholt College, Hampshire, looked into whether zoo enrichment is based on evidence of what each species requires. It was discovered that this was true for specific animals as well as certain forms of enrichment, but the quantities of both could be larger, especially the samples of certain species of animals. “Based on our findings, we would encourage zoos to continue enrichment, but with a stronger emphasis on using available knowledge on what works for each species. Keepers should also consider what behaviors are being taught and whether there is evidence that this behavior is normal and good in the long run.” stated University of Exeter’s Dr. Paul Rose.
The research looked at a database of peer-reviewed works as well as two magazines for zoo workers. Almost 77 percent of the enrichment articles identified focused on mammals, with 11 percent on birds, 6 percent on considerable species, 4 percent on reptiles, and only a few on some other species. This emphasis on popular species may result in greater and higher-quality enrichment for some species than others. What’s more, in the case of mammals, the application of biological evidence to inform this enrichment was inconsistent.
There are many ways to enrich an animal’s surroundings such as adjusting animal care, forming social groups, and enhancing sensory stimulation. The purpose of any enrichment program should be to generate ideas for providing a species-appropriate stimulating environment that encourages positive behaviors while keeping in mind that both species and individuals will have varied demands.
12. What does the latest study mentioned in the passage want to figure out
A. The real situation of zoo enrichment. B. The final evidence of zoo enrichment.
C. The possible future of zoo enrichment. D. The original purpose of zoo enrichment.
13. How did the writer prove his statement in paragraph 3
A. By giving a database. B. By doing persuasion.
C. By discussing the data. D. By presenting an example.
14. What are not enough about the environmental enrichment according to the passage
A The lasting challenges and opportunities.
B. The space of the zoos and the keepers’ knowledge.
C. The enrichment types, the animal species and numbers.
D. The stimuli the keepers give and the articles the keepers write.
15. Which could be the best title of this passage
A. More Zoo Keepers Should Be Developed B. Enrichment of Zoos Could Be Expanded
C. Articles on Enrichment Could Be Published D. Environmental Enrichment Should Be Encouraged

What does it look like, how does it taste, and does it go well with a cup of tea These were the questions that sprang to mind when a bottle of pea milk landed on our desks.
We tried the milk on its own, as well as in a cup of good old English breakfast tea to see if we could taste the difference. Here are our comments.
“No pea scents (香味)here.”
Echo, Assistant Life Editor
“It smells like normal tea, and if no one told me it was pea milk, I wouldn't know. I was expecting a strong pea taste. It's perfect if you're not keen on other milk alternatives sweet and creamy for me.”
“H tastes surprisingly sweet."
Nancy, Life Editor
"First impression: well, it's not green. In fact, it has more a grey tint(色调)in the glass. On its own, the milk surprisingly sweet, and, I don't like it. However, when you think about it being made from peas, it has a touch of their metallic aftertaste, too. In my tea, it's light and non-creamy."
“It's certainly a choice I would give a go.”
Maggie, Audience Editor
“I never thought I'd want peas in my tea. The tea with pea milk tasted similar to a normal cup of tea, with other various plant-based milk. Of course, it's a choice. I would give it a go as the alternative milk. On its own, I am not so keen.”

For one person who passed away, another life supersedes him.
Back in January, Connie Despanic and Benjamin Hall were celebrating the birth of their new born son at the hospital. Though they had agreed on naming him Kingston, they had not yet decided on a middle name. However, they soon found inspiration in an unlikely place; a handwritten letter that was given to them shortly after their son's birth. The letter read, "To my dad's angel, even though I will never know your name, you are the first child born here after my dad's passing. When one life is taken, another is given."
The letter was written by Jamie Fontenot. Her father James had just passed away in the same hospital. As Jamie was missing her father, a sweet song started to play on the overhead speakers. When she asked nurses about the song, they said that the hospital played the song whenever a baby
was born. In her time of heartbreak, Jamie found comfort in the new life that followed her dad's death, so she wrote the letter and asked the nurses to give it to the baby whose birth caused the music.
Upon reading the note, Connie started to cry. She was full of appreciation for the letter. She and her husband agreed that their son's middle name should be James. After delivering the note to the baby's family, the nurses insisted on introducing Jamie to Connie and her new born son. The meeting was an emotional one. And over the course of the last year, the two families have kept in touch and become fast friends.

Plastic baby bottles shed microplastics when heated. Should you be worried about its side-effects We still don’t have enough evidence of health risks posed by microplastic consumptions by infants or adults.
“The last thing we want to do is unduly alarm parents," said John Boland, a professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and one of the authors of the Nature Food study. While the health effects of microplastics are still unknown, parents can significantly reduce their infants' exposure by adding some steps to their bottle preparation routine, Boland said. He recommends letting plastic bottles cool completely after sterilization(消毒)in hot water, then washing them out at least three times with water that's been allowed to cool to room temperature after being sterilized by boiling. Researchers here also found that plastic tea kettles, plastic instant noodle cups and plastic food storage containers all released similarly high levels of microplastics when subjected to heat.
As for what those microplastics may be doing in our bodies, the evidence so far is quite limited and unclear. Schwabl, another professor, said that points to a need for more research into microplastics released from plastic food storage containers, especially when they are subjected to higher temperatures. He noted some research has found microplastics can cause inflammation(发炎) in the organs, while other studies show they do not harm, "The threshold at which they cause problems has not been determined for humans," Schwabl said. For now, Schwabl agrees we shouldn't panic. He's avoiding plastic containers in his daily life - "not so much that I am afraid of the ingestion (吸收),but I think thereby I may be contributing to reducing the amount of plastic waste" that makes its way into the environment.
At the moment, there is no need to be afraid, but it is an open .question and definitely an unmet need.

A. Panic. B. Caring. C. Indifference. D. Critical.
31. How is the passage developed
A. By providing the examples. B. By reasoning the readers.
C. By analyzing the figures. D. By comparing the findings.

Recently Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, including the China General Chamber of Commerce and China Cuisine Association, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help cultivate new eating habits for customers. ^Restaurants should innovate means of publicity using official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions," the proposal said.
Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.
Catering (餐饮)associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to eliminate food waste. The China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Eleme, the Alibaba Group Holding-owned food delivery platform, to launch a "half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an "N-l" ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required.
To curb portrayals of food waste on social media platforms, popular Chinese video platforms such as Douyin and Kuaishou have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and 'implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now if users search certain keywords, such as "eating show" or ''competitive eaters”, a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and maintain a reasonable diet.
32. Why did Meituan start such a proposal
A. To popularize itself. B. To save itself.
C. To mislead the public. D. To prevent food waste.
33. What can be inferred from the passage

B. "half-dish plan, functioned better than "N-l" ordering code.
C. Meituan met with some management challenges.
D. Customers are required to order smaller portions.
34. Which of the following is true
A. Meituan releases some misleading food information.
B. More food is welcome when we treat our dear friends.
C. Few organizations realized the importance of food waste.
D. Online eating shows are monitored via media platforms.

Jeremy Locke, who owns a roofing and construction company in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, had always been wanting to repair the roof of Jeanette MacDonald's home. Whenever he drove past the woman's home, he assumed that the roof was under repair because the job had already been taken on by another group of repairmen—but as the weeks wore on, the roof continued to worsen without any signs of repair.
“ I had it in my mind that if no one steps up to help this lady in our community, I’d be more than happy to,” Locke told CBC.
When Locke finally reached out to MacDonald about fixing her roof for free, however, she politely declined his offer because she did not like to accept charity. That being said, she had already applied for a government grant (补助金) to fix the roof and she said she was more than happy to hire Locke once her grant application was approved.
Unfortunately, MacDonald never received the approval.
As the stubborn (固执的) Canadian senior refused to accept any assistance from Locke, the sympathetic construction worker played an innocent trick in order to get her to accept his help. He invited MacDonald to enter a raffle (抽奖活动)that his business was holding for a free roof. After the grandmother — of — four accepted one of the raffle tickets, Locke told her that she was the winner—because she was the only one who had entered the raffle.
Thanks to his sweet little plan, Locke and his crew are starting work on the roof this week, which is expected to cost his company about $9, 000.
MacDonald, meanwhile, told CBC that she doesn't know how to express her gratitude to Locke, saying that he is her “guardian angel”.
"There's nobody out there like him," she added.
4. What did Locke desire to do for MacDonald
A. Repair her roof. B. Find a repairman.
C. Run a charity. D. Raise money.
5. Why did MacDonald refuse Locke's offer initially
A. She didn't trust him. B. She had won a raffle.
C. She didn't like free help. D. She had got an official grant.
6. How did Locke finally make MacDonald change her mind
A. He persuaded her to give up her application.
B. He invited her to enter his business.
C. He gave her about $9 000.
D. He told her a white lie.
7. Which of the following words best describe Locke
A. Stubborn and tricky. B. Wealthy and innocent.
C. Determined and warm-hearted. D. Different and ambitious.

As the climate warms, birds are shrinking and their wingspans are growing, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed 70,716 birds from 52 kinds of North American migratory(迁徙的)bird species collected over 40 years. The authors say the study is the largest of its kind and that the findings are important to understanding how animals will adapt to climate change.
"We found almost all of the species were getting smaller." said lead author Brian Weeks, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan.
"The species were pretty diverse, but responding in a similar wav." he said. "The consistency was shocking."
He said studies of animal responses to climate change often focus on shifts in geographical range or timing of life events, like migration and birth. But this study suggests body morphology(形态)is a crucial third aspect.
"That's one major implication," he said, "It's hard to understand how birds will adapt without taking all three of these things into consideration."
The findings showed that from 1978 to 2016, the length of the birds' lower leg bone shortened by 2.4%. Over the same time, the wings lengthened by 1.3%.
The evidence suggests warming temperatures caused the decrease in body size, which in turn caused the increase in wing length.
"Migration is an incredibly taxing thing they do," Mr. Weeks said, explaining that the smaller body size means less energy available for the birds to complete their long journeys.
He says the birds most likely to survive migration were the ones with longer wingspans and smaller bodies.
The scientists aren't exactly sure why warmer temperatures cause birds to shrink. One theory is that smaller animals are better at cooling off, losing body heat more quickly.
8. What's the best title for the text
A. All of the Birds Are Getting Smaller
B. Animals Are Adapting to Climate Change
C. Climate Change Is Causing Birds to Shrink
D. Scientists Are Finding Causes of Warm Climate
9. What made Brian Weeks feel astonished
A. It took 40 years to collect 70,716 birds from North America.
B. Many birds are shrinking when responding to the climate change.
C. All migratory bird species were collected to do the important research.
D. So many researchers take part in the largest study to work out the findings.
10 What does the underlined word "taxing" most probably mean
A. Tiring. B. Important
C. Easy. D. Pleasant
11. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. The migratory birds aren't big.
B. The temperatures will be higher.
C. The scientists will go on further study.
D. The smaller animals will surely live longer.
D
The fact that over 1.24 million people lose their lives each year in road accidents is a horrifying statistic that could soon be prevented. It should be of no surprise to understand that the autonomous vehicle industry is predicted to be worth $2.6 trillion a year within 15 years.
What's the future of personal transportation Well, you'll likely be spending a lot less time behind the wheel, for one. The rise of self-driving cars means that some scenes out of science-fiction flicks(电影)(think Total Recall or I, Robot)are now reality—and even more will be available soon.
Cars today already include many semi-autonomous features, like assisted parking and self-braking systems. And completely autonomous vehicles—able to operate without human control—are rapidly becoming more of a reality. You're probably familiar with Google's version, which has made headlines with its Google Chauffeur software, which the company hopes to bring to market by 2020.
The pros of autonomous cars are many. "The sensors in a self-driving car are always observing, are not affected by the state of the driver(sleepy, angry, etc.), and can scan in multiple directions simultaneously(同时地)," says Dr. Dominique Freckmann, an automotive engineering manager at TE Connectivity, "Autonomous driving is a key aspect of the industry's drive toward safer roadways."
"Recent NHTSA research shows that approximately 94 percent of accidents are caused by human error," adds Alan Amici, a vice president of automotive engineering at TE. "Cars with advanced safety features and eventually, self-driving cars, can significantly reduce the number of collisions. The impact of this innovation can be far-reaching, including reduced demand on emergency response systems and reduced auto insurance and health care costs."
12. What is the author's attitude towards the autonomous vehicle industry
A. Positive. B. Disapproving.
C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
13. Why is Google Chauffeur software given as an example here
A. Because people believe Google will sell it in 2020.
B. Because it is the most famous software of the company.
C. Because people are all familiar with the famous software.
D. Because it shows completely autonomous vehicles will be true.
14. Which is the main reason why Alan Amici favors self-driving
A. Self-driving will cost less than now.
B. People will easily save a lot of time.
C. Self-driving will be safer than now.
D. People will rely more on auto insurance.
15. What is the author's purpose of writing the text
A To show his adoration of self-driving cars.
B. To predict the future of personal transportation.
C To prevent so many road accidents caused by driving.
D. To introduce the benefits of autonomous vehicle industry.
