This past summer, my family went on our annual vacation in a cottage on a lake. There were various activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and building sand castle on the beach. In the evenings, we gathered on the beach, having great fun.
However, by the third day of our vacation, I noticed my sister, Jane, spent most of her time watching videos and looking through online shops indoors. She was so addicted to her cellphone! Over dinner, I told Jane we would hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning. I stared at her, “Put your phone away and enjoy the scenery. It’s really amazing.”
“Well,” Jane shrugged her shoulders and answered unwillingly, “there are some bargains tomorrow in several online shops, so I’ll not be available.”
“Come out to enjoy the fresh air and many views. Hiking is fun!”
“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation,” she didn’t look up from her soup and mumbled (嘟囔), “I can’t walk that far.”
When I said it only took half an hour of steady walking to climb to the top, she nodded, “OK, I’ll go.”
The next morning was perfect for a hike, with sunny clear skies and gentle winds. I got up early and packed some sandwiches and bottles of water into my backpack along with the camera. Jane came slowly downstairs, and announced in a very unenthusiastic voice, “I’m ready to go, Jim.”
Anyway, we stepped out of our cottage and quite a different view unfolded before our eyes. Against the blue skies, a rough path wound to the top of the mountain across the lake with wild flowers and grass on both sides. The sunlight brightened on the glassy surface of the lake. We began from the path. “I’m still wondering if this is a good idea, but if you could do it, I could also do.” She complained, frowning.

The cost of a smile
Kathy was a young woman in her 20’s who worked in a small restaurant as a waitress. One day, as she went about her shift with her usual angry look, a kind old man walked in and sat down at the counter. He read the menu and politely told her what he wanted.
Kathy took his order and yelled, “Your food will be ready soon.” As she turned to leave, the man said, “A smile costs nothing”. Kathy rolled her eyes at him and walked away.
She brought his order, cleared his plates, and gave him the bill, for which he left a nice tip.
Each time the old man saw her, he smiled and thanked her. This only made her angrier.
A week went by, and every day the man came for lunch and the same thing happened. And each time Kathy took his order he would say, “A smile costs nothing.”
But a week later, Kathy picked up a menu, wrote the words “1 SMILE … $20” at the bottom, and placed it on the counter for the kind old man to see.
He came, and Kathy waited for his reaction as he read the menu. The old man ordered his usual and added, “… and a smile, if you don’t mind.” Kathy was so surprised. She laughed out loud, “Now, now …” The man jokingly scolded. “I ordered a smile, not a laugh.” So Kathy put on a bright smile and said, “Coming right up, sir.” And to her surprise, he left $20 tip!
A few years went by, and the two bonded like family. Charlie, the kind old man, was a retired manager whose wife passed away long ago. He spent most of his time at home, with the exception of his frequent restaurant visits. Every day Kathy spent her break talking to him.

第二节 (满分25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
On March 3, Eric Johnson was asleep when the family’s six-year-old Australian shepherd, Bella, woke him up. Bella was acting unpredictably, giving Johnson the sense that “something just didn’t feel right.” Bella sensed danger, and alerted the family to the tornado that soon destroyed their home.
When Johnson woke up, he turned on the TV and found out that a tornado was headed toward their town of Cookeville, Tennessee. He quickly grabbed his wife and their three children and put them in the bathtub. Nearly 45 minutes later, around 2:00 am, the tornado hit and destroyed the house. Johnson was thrown into the backyard.
Johnson said, “Bella was hiding under our bed when the tornado hit our house. She was thrown into our yard and survived and was missing after that. It was hard for us knowing she had survived but we couldn’t find her. She was the piece of our family that was missing.” The furious 175 mph twister destroyed everything in its path. The Johnsons would not have survived if not for Bella.
Johnson suffered a head injury and his wife had broken ribs, but they soon set about searching for their beloved heroic dog. They left pieces of clothing around the destroyed neighborhood, hoping that Bella would recognize the scent and find her way back home. Church friend and dog tracker Sarah Romeyn also joined in.
She borrowed cameras from a local animal rescue group and set them up in areas where people reported seeing her. She also worked with other dog trackers and even sought tips from residents with the help of the Putnam County Police Department.
When leads dried up, the Johnsons and Romeyn pressed on. “I was still finding time searching in parking lots, but it was tough. Because nobody had found a body, in rescue you can’t give up until you know you don’t have a positive outcome. And I hadn’t given up,” Romeyn said.
Paragraph 1: In time, they found a glimmer of hope when Romeyn got a call from friend Karen Ritacco, who said that Bella was behind her shop._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Romeyn was happy to play a part in the rescue, but also credits the community for their help.___________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

山东省泰安肥城市2022届高考适应性训练英语试题(二)
【答案】One possible version:
She followed me, her mind wandering. Minutes later, we started to climb a steep slope. Jane sighed, dragging her legs behind me. I was surprised to find some rarely-seen trees and flowers, and took many photos but Jane showed no interest. She stopped and sat on a rock, thirsty, sweaty and bored. I handed her a bottle of water and we took a break. “I missed my phone.” she complained as we continued climbing. Though unhappy, she just climbed along with me.
Reaching the top, Jane widened her eyes, shouting, “How wonderful!” She looked around dreamily, her eyes twinkling with wild excitement. A refreshing breeze brushed the mountain top, miles of trees spread out below us and birds chirped between branches. We sat on a large rock and ate sandwiches, enjoying the sounds, the smells and the sunlight. “Anyone still wants her phone ” I joked. She rolled her eyes, laughing out loud. The next morning, Jane danced to my room, crying, “Let’s hike around the lake today.” Sure, get our backpack then, I beamed, relieved and joyful.

山东省泰安肥城市2021届高考适应性训练英语试题(二)
Paragraph 1:
One day he didn’t come to the restaurant. Kathy couldn’t concentrate on her work the whole day. Even when the restaurant was going to close, Charlie didn’t show up, and she was trapped in anxiety. After work, Kathy hurried to Charlie’s home, only to be told by his neighbors that he had passed away last night. Not until then did she know that he had fought against cancer alone during the past years. Kathy was totally overwhelmed by grief when she heard this.
Paragraph 2:
Several days after his death, Kathy received a very important-looking letter in the mail. She opened the letter with her hands shaking slightly. At the sight of the familiar handwriting, tears welled up in Kathy’s eyes. Charlie expressed his gratitude for her company these years. Looking at the words “...and you must continue to smile at life”, she couldn’t contain her sorrow and tears poured down her cheeks. Only then did she realize the true meaning of smile: bring others warmth and company.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
In time, they found a glimmer of hope when Romeyn got a call from friend Karen Ritacco, who said that Bella was behind her shop. Romeyn enlisted the help of her husband, their pastor, and Eric Johnson to get Bella. When the team had Bella trapped in the enclosed space, the poor dog began to panic, until Johnson called out to her. Romeyn said, “It was heartbreaking. You could see her stop, and you could see the wheels turning. There was something so familiar.” Then something clicked, and she recognized Johnson. Bella was home.
Paragraph 2:
Romeyn was happy to play a part in the rescue, but also credits the community for their help. “I feel like our whole community had a part in bringing Bella back. I give it all to God. So many things had to come together to make this happen.” Now that Bella is back, the Johnsons are focusing on moving forward and plan to rebuild their property. The tornado may have destroyed all of their possessions, but Johnson is just grateful that their family is together again.
