The theatrical magic that keeps New York’s Broadway going these days has been ready for performers to step in in an emergency. Actor Carla Stickler went a step further. She returned to acting from retirement to save the musical Wicked.
Stickler started a new career as a software engineer in Chicago three years ago. But she called off her vacation this winter and went to New York City’s center of theater performances, Broadway. She had agreed to replace a star of the show after much of the cast became infected with COVID-19.
Stickler played the green skinned Elphaba in the musical play. She may have been playing a bad .woman, but Stickler’s effort was all good. Her effort is just one example of the work Broadway’s understudies (预备演员) do. They are standbys and fill-ins who keep shows open. Often, they learn several parts with little official rehearsing (排练). The heavy pressure on theater companies to keep shows open is eased by these skillful understudies.
Stickler had last performed the part on Broadway in 2015. She had spent 10 years with the Broadway Company and starred in a national series of Wicked. “ Elphaba is kind of something that lives in my body. I think everybody is really doing the best they can. I do think the fact that the show has been able to stay open is a proof of how devoted the actors are to the show and how great and talented the group of people that they have hired over the years are, ” said Stickler.
Stickler is staying in New York this week just in case this musical needs her help. Then, she will travel back to Chicago, but she would not likely refuse a similar call to act in the future. “ I would do it again in a heartbeat. I love the show, ” Stickler said. “ If I turn 100, I’ll do it at my 100th birthday party. ”

New methods have allowed researchers and scientists to find a way to reduce heat from buildings by about 30%. This new “green” solution is quite literally green as it involves fitting a living wall, according to a new research.
To see what effects renewing a living wall on an existing building using fabric and pockets to stick soil and plants onto the walls would have on the environment, the scientists decided to test it out on a building at a university in the UK, which was originally built in the 1970’s. As a control, part of the building was not fitted with the living wall. Both of the parts of the building were west-facing and the test was conducted over 5 weeks. What was found was that the part with the living wall lost 31.4% less heat as compared to the side without it. It also had a more stable temperature as the day progressed, so it took less energy to heat.
In the UK, approximately 57% buildings were built before 1964. They have caused 17% of greenhouse emission (排放), about 60% of which comes from space heating. If people could reduce heat loss from older buildings by 30%, a huge part of that could be removed, while regulations have changed more recently to improve the thermal performance of new constructions, it is the existing buildings that require the most energy to heat and are a significant contributor to carbon emissions. It is, therefore, essential that people begin to improve the thermal performance of these existing buildings if the UK is to reach its target of net zero carbon emission by 2050, and help to reduce the possibility of fuel poverty (贫困) from rising energy prices.
The new research suggests living walls can also provide significant energy savings to help reduce the carbon footprint of existing buildings. Perfecting these living wall systems, however, is now needed to help increase the environmental benefits and reduce some of the sustainability costs.

Engineers from China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp ( CASC ) are known for their achievements such as landing a robot to explore Mars. However, the latest display of their wisdom and knowledge took place on the ground at the Bird’s Nest during the opening ceremony for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. They were tasked with building 11 major components for the 140-minute ceremony.
The “ ice cube (立方) ” a structure covered by LED screens, was an example of engineers using their knowledge to handle technical challenges. The main body weighed 180 tons and had to be raised gradually during the ceremony, which meant that engineers needed to design a reliable method to lift it. Designers and technicians developed a foldable frame capable of lifting the huge cube in just 43 seconds.
Another visual breakthrough is a ground-based display screen covering 10,100 square meters. They used industrial internet technologies to connect more than 40,000 screens and monitor their working conditions. It is essential that engineers should place four signal transmission lines for the screen to prepare sufficient backup capacity to ensure that it functions properly.
The torches (火把) carried by Chinese athletes during the final legs of the relay in the stadium were developed by researchers who used their knowledge and skills gained from developing rocket engines. The torches can burn among wind up to 28 meters per second. They will not go out during strong rain or in low temperatures. New flag poles in the stadium flying the Chinese national flag and the Olympic flag were also designed and made by space researchers.
There is no doubt that technology from space industry has had an unexpected effect on the performance stage during the opening ceremony. Famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, director of the opening ceremony, said, “As a crucial technical company, it was responsible for the design and construction work for the performance stage. The designs and equipment provided by this company worked very well and far exceeded our expectations. ”

While some customs like setting off fireworks and counting down the last few seconds seem universal, many countries have their own unique New Year’s Eve traditions.
Denmark: Break plates
A Danish tradition is to throw plates and dishes against friend’s and neighbor’s front doors. It’s a bit of a popularity contest as the bigger the pile of broken china is the next morning, the more friends and good luck you’ll have in the coming year.
Germany: Pouring lead
In Germany people melt small pieces of lead in a spoon over a candle, then pour the liquid into cold water. The shapes from the lead pouring are supposed to reveal what the year ahead will bring. If the lead forms a ball, luck will roll one’s way, while the shape of a crown means wealth; a cross means death and a star will bring happiness.
Spain: Twelve grapes of luck
In Spain, one New Year’s tradition is to eat 12 grapes, one for each month of the coming year, to secure prosperity (繁荣). You need to eat one grape with each bell strike at midnight. The tradition dates from 1909 when farmers in Alicante came up with this idea to sell more grapes after an exceptional harvest.
Philippines: Round food, round clothes, round everything
In the Philippines, the start of the new year is all about the money. The locals believe that surrounding themselves with round things (to represent coins) will bring money or fortune. As a result, clothes with dots are worn and round food is eaten.

A cozy environment fostering focused thinking and concentration on books is what study lounges are all about. Ideal for students with limited options as after-school study spaces. And relatively cheap.
The demand for study lounges rose in China because students can hardly find a peaceful place to study after finishing classes. Before 2018, there were few study lounges in China, and the few that existed were mainly in first- and second-tier cities such as Guangzhou, Suzhou and Tianjin. Yet by 2019, they had become popular nationwide.
But the pandemic (流行病) has dealt a blow to the industry. Since personal contact in a closed environment is unavoidable, the pandemic forced all study lounges to shut down for several months. Lou Qingxiao, founder of Xinliuzaowu, one of Beijing’s earliest study lounge brands that opened in 2018, said their first study lounge near Renmin University of China had made ends meet before the pandemic. Li Hang and Zhang Yang, co-founders of Sishiloushi, a Beijing-based independent study lounge, said that even before COVID-19 broke out, the industry’s profit was neither promising nor clear, let alone in such a particular period.
“Rent is a major fixed cost for study lounges, especially in first-tier cities,” Lou said. In a first-tier city such as Beijing, rentals comprise more than a half of a study lounge’s monthly operation cost. But Lou sounds optimistic about the industry commercial prospects, “because it’s a blue ocean with less competition.”
Study lounges provide a better learning experience that people cannot get in free public libraries. “Privately operated study lounges like ours actually make up for the shortage of public infrastructure (基础设施) and public services and we are willing to cooperate with the government to better serve the public.” Li said.
8. What contributes to the rise of study lounges in China
A. The rapid development of cities.
B. The shrinking number of libraries.
C. The need for a peaceful study environment.
D. The lack of alternative after-school activities.

Dogs can’t speak, but their brains respond to spoken words. Every dog owner knows that saying “Good dog!” in a happy, high voice will make their pet joyfully wag its tail. That made scientists curious: What exactly happens in your dog’s brain when it hears praise, and is it similar to the way our own brain processes such information
When a person gets others’ compliment, the more primitive, subcortical auditory regions (皮层下听觉区) first reacts to the intonation — the emotional force of spoken words. Next, the brain taps the more recently evolved auditory cortex (听觉皮层) to figure out the meaning of the words, which is learned.
In 2016, a team of scientists discovered that dogs’ brains, like those of humans, compute the intonation and meaning of a word separately — although dogs use their right brain to do so, whereas we use our left one. Still, a puzzle remained: Do their brains go through the same steps to process approval
It’s an important question, because dogs are a speechless species, yet they respond correctly to our words. For instance, some dogs are capable of recognising thousands of names of individual objects, and can link each name to a specific object.
When the scientists studied scans of the brains of pet dogs, they found that theirs, like ours, process the sounds of spoken words in this manner — analyzing first the emotional component with the older region of the brain, the subcortical regions, and then the words’ meaning with the newer part, the cortex.
See why dogs are so successful at partnering with us Dogs and humans last shared a common ancestor some 100 million years ago, so it’s likely that our brains respond to sounds in a similar way. As domesticated animals that have evolved alongside humans for the past 10,000 years, dogs make special use of it to process human emotions. You know, what we say really matters to dogs!
12. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “compliment”
A. Reply. B. Praise. C. Warning. D. Advice.
13. What is the first step a dog’s brain goes through to process approval
A. Linking it to an object. B. Analyzing the emotion.

One of the most important things that has happened to me occurred long before I was aware of it. As the story goes, I was three days old and Mom was singing “The Name Game” song to me: “Christine Bo-Bean-Banana-Fanna-Fo-Feen.” By day four, I was given a new name — Christine-Bo-Bean, or just Bo-Bee to my mother. Now, I am Bo to her and close friends.
Why is this nickname(昵称)so important to me I once read a book with a passage about True Names which explains that when a person’s true name is spoken, she has a distinct aura(光环)around her. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique and memorable as I am.
People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice; it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.
Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I have changed. Bo is a tight squeeze in the old “Christine” boxes. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.
When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.
As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.
A name shouldn’t make such a difference, but sometimes, when a person finds his or her True Name, they develop a new shine visible to friends, family and especially themselves.
I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.

Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past.
The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment from under the seafloor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment, they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals. The sediment was removed by scientists on the research icebreaker RV Polarstern in the Amundsen Sea near Pine Island Glacier.
Johann Klages is a geologist with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the journal Nature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor. Klages said an examination showed that the material didn't form in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area — about 900 kilometers from the South Pole — had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Klages added that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants. While no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.
The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth has experienced in the past — and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet’s warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today. The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.
8. How did the researchers reach their findings
A. By exploring ice in Antarctica.
B. By analyzing the Earth sediment.
C. By collecting data on climate.
D. By researching special plants.
9. What did the researchers say about the sediment
A. Its material developed in the ocean.
B. It dates back to cold times in Antarctica.
C. Its material formed on the land.
D. It contained different animal remains.
10. What does the author indicate in the last paragraph
A. Antarctica’s natural environment has changed greatly.
B. Polar nights in Antarctica are getting shorter than before.
C. There were ice sheets 140 million years ago.
D. Seasonal snowfall made the forest disappear.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Researchers study the secrets of Antarctica.
B. Antarctica had a different history of climate.
C. There’s various wildlife in Antarctica.
D. Antarctica has an extreme environment containing ice and snow.

With the help of a robot created by Washington State University (WSU) , scientists could help elderly people with dementia and other limitations live independently in their own homes.
The Robot Activity Support System, or RAS, uses sensors equipped in a WSU smart home to determine where its residents are, what they are doing and when they need assistance with daily activities. It navigates through rooms and around obstacles to find people on its own, provides video instructions on how to do simple tasks and can even lead its owners to objects like their medication or a snack in the kitchen.
“RAS combines the convenience of a mobile robot with the activity detection technology of a WSU smart home to provide assistance in the moment, as the need for help is detected.“ said Bryan Minor, a postdoctoral researcher in the WSU School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
Currently, about 50 percent adults over the age of 85 need assistance with everyday activities such as preparing meals and taking medication and the annual cost for this assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion. With the number of adults over 85 expected to triple by 2050, researchers hope that technologies like RAS and the WSU smart home will relieve some of the financial pressure on the healthcare system by making it easier for older adults to live alone.
RAS is the first robot researchers have tried to apply to their smart home environment. They recently published a study in the journal Cognitive Systems Research that shows how RAS could make life easier for older adults struggling to live independently.
“While we are still in an early stage of development, our initial results with RAS have been promising,” Minor said. “The next step in the research will be to test RAS’ performance with a group of older adults to get a better idea of what video reminders and other preferences they have regarding the robot.”
12. Which part is the most important for RAS to serve the elderly
A. Signal lights. B. Sensors. C. Videos. D. Head size.
13 What can we learn about RAS
A. It is the first robot used in daily life. B. Its function remains to be tested.
C. It can cook for owners on its own. D. It can locate people and do any task.
14. What’s Minor’s attitude toward the future of RAS
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Uncertain. D. Positive.
15. What would be a suitable title for the text
A. Smart Home Tests First Elder Care Robot B. Elderly People Leave the Nursing Home
C. RAS, the First Robot to Make Home Smart D. Older Adults Have Benefited from RAS a Lot

Two weeks ago, I had an amazing trip to my friend's house in Serawai. Serawai is the name of a sub-district in Sintang Regency, Indonesia.
At that time, I was warmly welcomed by peaceful green yard. My trip was full of unforgettable moments: great people, delicious food, new cultures. However, what left a remarkable impression on me was meeting up with my friend's dad, Fx. Ngawan. He is now working as an education supervisor in Sintang Regency.
At our first encounter, he looks like a typical Dayaknese man with dark skin. As he mentioned that he used to be an English teacher, we discovered we were a match! I am an English teacher myself. More importantly, he is a language enthusiast and a hyperpolyglot(超级多语者). During the talk, we often switched from one language another such as Indonesian. English, Javanese to Ahe. He is now fluent in at least 15 languages and most of them are local languages.
When he was assigned to be a teacher and education supervisor, he had to go all the way from Serawai sub-district to Sintang Regency by motorcycle, riding about 170 km by motorcycle. The trip can take six hours if the day is bright and sunny. However, it is not uncommon for him to spend three to seven days for the journey if the raining season comes. Therefore, he has to stop at some villages if he can't continue the trip and meet up with people with so many different languages along the way. So, whenever he stops in a particular village, he learns a different language. For him, learning languages helps him to connect with people.
In our last talk, he highlighted(强调) the importance of learning languages. He hopes that the younger generation in Indonesia start realizing that language is the gate to open up so many opportunities. Local languages are facing disappearance because more people are leaving it behind. When people stop speaking the languages, the knowledge and culture from that language will also disappear.

C. Being English teachers. D. Mastering several languages.
25. How was Ngawan's motorcycle trip

27. What can we infer from the last paragraph

C. Local languages are being more important. D. Languages and culture are closely related.

In 1938, Soichiro Honda started a little workshop, developing the concept of the piston ring(活 塞环).
His plan was to sell the idea to Toyota. He labored night and day. Finally, came the day he completed his piston ring and was able to take a working sample to Toyota, only to be told that the rings did not meet their standards!
Rather than focus on his failure, he continued. working towards his goal. Then, after two more years of struggle and redesign, he won a contract with Toyota.
By now, the Japanese government was gearing up for war! With the contract in hand, Soichiro Honda needed to build a factory to supply Toyota, but building materials were in short supply. He invented a new concrete-making process that enabled him to build the factory.
With the factory now built, he was ready for production, but the factory was bombed twice and steel became unavailable, too. He started collecting gasoline cans discarded by US fighters- “Gifts from President Truman, ” he called them, which became the new raw materials for his rebuilt manufacturing process.
After the war, an extreme gasoline shortage forced people to walk or use bicycles. Honda built a tiny engine and attached it to his bicycle. His neighbors wanted one, and although he tried, materials could not be found and he was unable to supply the demand.
Soichiro Honda wrote to 18, 000 bicycle shop owners and, in an inspiring letter, asked them to help him revitalize(复兴)Japan.5, 000 responded and advanced him what little money they could to build his tiny bicycle engines. The small engine “The Super Cub” became a reality and was a success. With success in Japan, Honda began exporting his bicycle engines to Europe and America.
In the 1970s there was another gas shortage, this time in America and automotive fashion turned to small cars. Honda was quick to pick up on the trend. Experts now in small engine design, the company started making tiny cars, and rode another wave of success.
Today, Honda Corporation employs over 100, 000 people in the USA and Japan, and is one of the world's largest automobile companies. Honda succeeded because one man made a truly committed decision, acted upon it, and made adjustments on a continuous basis. Failure was simply not considered a possibility.

Working at a desk all day may not be as bad for your health as sitting in front of a television after work. That is a finding of a new study done in the United States.
Jeanette Garcia, a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, led the study.
“We've been hearing more and more about how sitting is the new smoking. Previous evidence suggests a relationship between health problems and time spent sitting. As long as you reduce any type of sitting, then that's helpful in improving health, ” she said.
“This study, however, suggests that this may not be the case, and that we should focus more on leisure time sitting, mainly television viewing time, rather than sitting, in general, ” she added.
The study followed close to 3, 600 African-American adults. Almost one-third of them watched TV for more than four hours a day. A little more than one-third of the subjects spent between two and four hours a day sitting in front of the TV. The remaining third watched TV for less than two hours a day.
Researchers followed the group for an average of 8. 4 years. During the study, 205 of the subjects died and 129 others suffered a heart attack or pared to people who watched less than two hours of television daily, those who spent more than four hours in front of the TV were 49 percent more likely to die or have a heart attack or stroke.
The study had some limitations, however. Lin Yang is a researcher at the University of Calgary in Canada. She says it is possible that sitting in front of the TV might be worse than sitting at a desk because people snack while they are watching TV. Some people simply stay up too late and do not get enough sleep. Eating treats or lack of sleep could both cause weight gain and increase risk factors for heart disease. These factors could make people more likely to die early, she added.
Arch Mainous, a researcher at the University of Florida in Gainesville, said in an email that it would be a mistake for people with desk jobs to think there is no need to get moving during the work day. Take the stairs rather than the elevator, or take a walk at lunch, Mainous advised. “Leisure time physical activity is definitely beneficial, but walking on some more steps in the workday should also be encouraged. ”
32. What can we learn from Jeanette Garcia's study
A. Not all forms of sitting are equally bad for health.
B. Reducing time spent sitting is an effective way to improve health.
C. 49% of those who spent more than four hours watching TV daily were unhealthy.
D. It's the first study ever indicating the relationship between health problems and sitting.
33. Which of the following may Lin Yang agree with
A. Sitting in front of the TV is not that harmful.
B. People may as well avoid doing their jobs at a desk.
C. Health risks have nothing to do with TV viewing.
D. Snacks and lack of sleep may be to blame for early death.
34. What should an office worker do according to Arch Mainous
A. Take the elevalor to save time. B. Participate in more activities.
C. Get moving during the workday. D. Take a walk to lose weight.
35. Where is this text most likely from
A. A poster. B. A textbook.
C. A guidebook. D. A magazine.

When she was a child, Wu Yunchen often ate fish balls at her home in Yunlin County in Taiwan Province, not because fish balls were her favorite dish, but because her parents ran a family business making them.
The family moved from Taiwan to Quanzhou in 1998 when Wu was 14. They started a company, Fu Bang Foodstuff, in Quanzhou and settled in the city. By that point, they had been producing delicious food for over a decade.
The efforts of the first generation made Fu Bang a leading business in Quanzhou. Because the business environment has changed, Wu has to become more active. Now that Wu has taken over, she is taking the company into new markets by using the digital world.
For her, the key to her parents’ success was the quality of the fish balls they made, but she is taking a slightly different approach. First, to reduce costs and increase efficiency, she has focused on improvements to the production line, from the purchase of raw materials to production and packaging. Besides, she has opened the factory to visitors, building confidence among potential future customers. At the same time, she has focused on the balls themselves.
Last year, Wu found the young generation seldom cooks, so she capitalized on the trend and began working on new products. One product she developed was the instant fish ball Normally, fish balls are frozen and have to be cooked, but the instant balls are ready to eat. Wu enlisted the help of product designers to make them as appealing as possible and then reached out to customers and taught people how to make dishes with the fish balls through livestreaming. Under her leadership, sales volumes climbed by 34.2 percent last year.

In 1914, Emest Shackleton and his team left England in a wooden sailing ship called the Endurance, hoping to become the first to cross Antarctica.
But in 1915, the Endurance became trapped over the Weddell Sea. The ice destroyed the Endurance and later sank it. Shackleton and all of his men lived, but the tale of their long and difficult return is one of the most famous survival stories of all time.
Much was known about the location of the Endurance. The ship’s captain kept accurate records of the ship’s position. The ship’s photographer even took pictures of it as it went down. But the ship, deep in the icy waters near Antarctica, had never been found.
Now, a search team called “Endurance22” located the ship, which was found 1.87 miles below the ocean’s surface, about four miles south of its last known position. The team reports that the ship is in excellent shape. Even though the ship is made of wood and is over 100 years old, it has survived with little damage. Scientists say that the small worms that normally break down wooden objects underwater don’t live in the cold waters around Antarctica.
The Endurance 22 is led by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust. The team ran the project from an ice-breaking ship. To locate the Endurance, the team used two underwater robots called Sabertooths which can travel by themselves deep under the sea. What makes them unique is that they can travel under the ice and go where the ship can not. Once the ship was located, the Sabertooths used high-quality cameras and scanners to record the Endurance in detail.
The Endurance22 plans to create a digital 3D model of the wreck site, using the careful scans they made. This will allow scientists to study the ship in detail without disturbing it.
28. What can we know about Shackleton
A. He had a hard journey back home. B. He was also a famous photographer.
C. He built the Endurance by himself. D. He was the first to cross Antarctica.
29. What helped preserve “the Endurance” well
A. Fine weather. B. Its size. C. Wood material. D. Cold water.
30. What is special about the Sabertooths
A. They can operate by remote control. B. They can search the sea floor.
C. They can travel under the ice. D. They can break ice on the sea.
31. How will the scientists deal with the discovered Endurance
A. They will check it in person. B. They will let it remain untouched.
C. They will use scanners to record its details. D. They will raise it from the seabed immediately.
D
According to new studies, many birds in the Amazon rainforest have become smaller as temperatures have increased. The difference hasn’t been obvious, but it has been significant enough that some scientists have suggested it’s a universal response to climate change.
But new research finds that the body size reductions aren’t happening across the board with some large-brained birds having much less significant changes.
For the study, researchers studied some data on about 70,000 birds that had died when they crashed into buildings in Chicago from 1978 to 2016. They added data on brain volume and lifespan (寿命) for 49 of the 52 species of migratory birds (候鸟) in the original study.
They found that birds with very large brains had reductions in overall body size that were about one-third of the reductions noted in birds with smaller brains. They thought that in birds, the species with big brains are the ones that build tools, manage to survive in tough environments, live longer, invest more time and energy into raising babies, and end up surviving better in the wild.
Researchers aren’t certain exactly how warmer temperatures might lead to decreasing body size in birds, but they are considering two possible explanations, which could even be happening at the same time. First, natural selection might be favoring birds that can dissipate heat better. This is because smaller birds have higher ratios (比例) of surface area to volume, so being small can help birds stay cool. Second, warmer summers might have less food available for birds at the time when they are feeding their babies. In that case, birds might be getting smaller because of decreased food over the years.
The findings don’t suggest that climate change is having zero impact on bigger-brained birds, but researchers believe these findings can inform us of climate change and help set conservation priorities.
32. How does climate change affect birds
A. Their body size shrinks. B. Their lifespan becomes shorter.
C. Their body temperature rises. D. Their habit changes quicker.
33. How did the scientists do the research
A. By studying the bird death rate. B. By observing the birds in nature.
C. By analyzing previous information. D. By comparing different bird species.
34. Which word can best replace the underlined word “dissipate” in paragraph 5
A. use B. hold C. absorb D. loge
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Birds’ Body Sizes Vary B. Brain Size Matters for Birds
C. Bird Brain Develops Sharply D. Temperature Rises Globally
