Zea Tongeman, a 14-year-old student, who is crazy about the Internet, applied technology to create an application that encourages people to recycle while having fun.
Zea was really inspired when she attended “Little Miss Geek Day”, an event that aims at making technology more accessible and appealing to young women and inspiring them to consider technology careers. Soon after, she entered “Apps for Good”, a competition that encourages students to create positive change through technology. Teaming up with her friend, Jordan Stirbu, she laid the foundations for “Jazzy Recycling”.
The “Jazzy Recycling” application is designed to encourage young people to recycle more, which wins the favor of the youth. It turns waste disposal into a game and helps you find places to recycle. Then you scan what you need to recycle, share it, and get rewards such as shopping vouchers (代金券) and games to be unlocked for what you have recycled.
Tapping into the teen enthusiasm for sharing every little aspect of their daily life on social media like Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, recycling efforts can be shared too as a fun game among friends, which makes more people take part in recycling activities.
Zea explains why she is addicted to the Internet and how technology has changed her ideas about the future, “I used to think technology was just fixing computers and using smartphones; I have become very tired from just using what is available. I have discovered another side to it and that I can make technology of my own.”

On Tuesday, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a series of new high-producing crop varieties, including herbicide-tolerant (耐除草剂的) rice that can be directly planted into the soil, cutting the huge expenses on water and farm workers.
In India, the world’s biggest rice exporter, the traditional method of rice growing requires farmers to grow seeds in nurseries, and then wait for 20 to 30 days before transplanting the small plants by hand into the fields that are ankle-deep in water.
With the new seed varieties developed by the state-run Indian Agricultural Research Institute, farmers only need to water the field once to moisten (使湿润) the soil before planting the rice. Besides, the traditional method also uses a lot of water to control weeds as herbicides are costly and often do not distinguish between the rice and the unwanted weeds.
Government scientists said the new rice varieties contained a gene that would allow farmers to spray a common, inexpensive herbicide without worrying about any side effects. “Our focus is very high on new seeds that can be adapted to new conditions, especially in changing climates,” Modi said.
Water conservation is likely to be the main attraction of the new rice varieties in India where farmers rely heavily on monsoon (季风) rains. The traditional method uses 3,000 to 5,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg rice. The new varieties could cut water use by at least 50% to 60%, farmers and government officials say. “For farmers like us, the main concern was the management of water, and the new varieties take care of that concern,” said Ravindra Kajal, who grows rice on his 9-acre farmland in the northern state of Haryana. India is also the world’s biggest rice producer after China.
8. Which is the benefit of the new rice
A. It can produce herbicide. B. It can be planted in any field.
C. It needs a lot of water to grow. D. It can save money for the farmers.
9. Why can farmers apply a common herbicide to the new rice
A. The new rice contains herbicide itself.
B. The herbicide is suitable for all rice varieties.
C. Genes in the new rice can avoid harm from herbicide.
D. The herbicide can distinguish the rice from the weeds.
10. What plays an important role in rice-planting in India
A. Water. B. Temperature. C. Wind. D. Sunlight.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. India Launches New Herbicides. B. India Cuts Expenses on Farming.
C. India Promotes New Rice Varieties. D. Farmers Appeal for New Rice Varieties.

One CT image of a brain changed science and medicine forever.
Half a century ago, the first CT image of a patient lifted the veil (面纱) of invisibility that covers the interior of the human body, providing scientists a window on our innards (内脏) unlike any before.
Today, doctors in the United States alone order more than 80 million scans per year. X-ray computed tomography, or CT, is frequently the quickest way of getting a handle on what’s causing a mysterious problem. CT scans can find out heart disease, tumors, blood clots, internal bleeding and more. The technique can give surgeons a heads-up about what they will encounter inside a patient, and guide treatment for cancer and other diseases.
“It answers so many questions quickly. That’s why it’s used,” says medical physicist Cynthia McCollough of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
A CT scan involves thousands of X-ray measurements taken from multiple angles. Here's how it works: A source of X-rays moves around the body, sending a beam (光束) of radiation through bone, blood and tissue, while moving detectors measure the beam that makes it through.
Different materials in the body absorb X-rays differently. The calcium (钙) in bone actively absorbs X-rays, for example, while soft tissues absorb less. So when the data collected by the detectors are joined together by a computer, it can form a cross-sectional view of what’s inside based on where X-rays are absorbed more or less. Moving the table holding the patient so that the X-ray beam and detectors slide along the body enables 3-D reconstructions of organs and other parts.
Over the years, scientists have continually improved the technology, making it faster and higher resolution (清晰度), and cutting the amount of radiation that patients receive. These improved CT scans have painted ever more detailed landscapes of the human body. It’s hard not to be impressed by the beauty of the inner world that the scans bring to the surface.
12. What does the underlined word “heads-up” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Measure. B. Choice. C. Forecast. D. Treatment.
13. How does CT help surgeons to detect problems
A. By using different materials to absorb X-rays.
B. By collecting and sending data to the computer.
C. By checking the amount of calcium in the bone.
D. By scanning what’s inside based on different X-rays absorption.
14. Which of the following can reflect the improvement in X-rays technology
A. Lower speed. B. More radiation. C. Higher resolution. D. Fewer details.
15. What is the writer’s attitude towards CT scans
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Disapproving. D. Indifferent.

The death of soccer legend Diego Maradona has shocked fans worldwide and drawn an outpouring of grief. Maradona, 60, died of a heart attack on Nov 25,2020.
Argentina's president, Alberto Fernandez, declared three days of national mourning upon Maradona's death. "You took us to the top of the world," he wrote on the social networking platform Twitter, "and you were the greatest of Indeed, Maradona lived a life that showed that soccer at its peak can have passions that move entire nations. He was a man who was deified (奉若神明)in Argentina and the Italian city of Naples.
Maradona reached legendary position during the 1986 World Cup in Mexico after scoring two winning goals against England in the quarterfinal. That was a redemption (救赎)for the nation, which was defeated in a war over territory (领土)conflict by the UK just four years earlier. But his magic didn't stop there. At a time when teams were largely domestic, Maradona became the first truly global soccer superstar. Before his arrival in Napoli in 1984 they never won the Serie A title. The city took him in, regarding him as the man to bring back pride and respect to Naples. The club won the championship for the first time ever in the 1986-87 season.
Magician though Maradona may have been, he was deeply human, thus deeply flawed. He appeared in newspapers more for his drug habit than for his soccer skills in the late 1990s. After he played his goodbye game in 2001, Maradona stated, "The ball does not show the dirt."
As a symbol and idol he shone brighter than any other athlete in the last century. Argentina and Barcelona star Lionel Messi wrote, "He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal (不朽的)
4. Why was Maradona regarded as "the greatest of all"
A. Because he was an international superstar.
B. Because he played soccer to the death of his life.

C. He was a great soccer player as well as a magician.
D. He was the brightest soccer star in the 19th century.

C
You don't talk; you watch talk shows. You don't play games; you watch game shows. Travel, relationships, risk... Every meaningful experience must be packaged and delivered to you to watch at a distance. In this way you can remain ever-sheltered consumers who can't bring themselves to rise from their couches, break a sweat and participate in life.
Games and apps are meant to get you addicted, said Gabe Zichermann, a designer of gamification. As an example, think of a photo-sharing app like Instagram or WeChat. After you post a new image to the social media platform, the app may send you a message if someone likes or comments on it. Tapping that message will take you back to the platform, where you're encouraged to provide an additional comment or view the related information of the person who liked or commented on your post. This begins a new cycle of involvement with the product, Zichermann said.
Other techniques to keep users online can arise from the data that apps collect from you as you use them, whether it's the number of steps you take in a day or your preference of puppy videos to kitten ones, according to Amy Jo Kim, a game designer of eBay and Netflix. You might also see behavior modification techniques in health and fitness tracking apps. For example, the Fitbit app, designed to accompany the wearable fitness device, lets users earn badges (徽章)tor hitting goals, which they then can share via social media.
According to the Pew Research Center, 26% of American adults say they go online “almost constantly”. Where people choose to spend their time online varies significantly, but gaming and social media are the frontrunners. Technology overuse has appeared as a modem disease and recently, the World Health Organization classified gaming disorder as a mental health condition. Beyond that, experts say technology overuse has the potential to prevent growth and development of social skills, mask mental illness and isolate us in an increasingly connected world.
8. What can we infer about Instagram
A. It encourages people to share writings. B. It is designed to attract users' participation.
C. Comments are not allowed on the app. D. Users will not see information of others.
9. Which app may contribute to keeping fit
A. WeChat. B. Fitbit. C. Netflix. D. eBay.
10. What do we know from the last paragraph
A. Ways to cure gaming disorder. B. Development of modem technology.
C. Problems of technology overuse. D. Introduction of games and social media.
11. Where is the text most likely from
A. A magazine. B. A novel. C. A guidebook. D. A diary.
D
Since the day the car and the airplane coexisted people have dreamed of combining them into one all purpose, go — anywhere, do — anything vehicle. However, there are a lot of reasons why cars and airplanes have yet to join forces.
They have very different needs, like the number of wheels. The four wheels on a car distribute its weight and provide traction and stability. A 3-wheeled car is much more likely to roll when taking a turn at high speed. But airplanes have 3 wheels because when they're on the ground they don't need to take turns at speed, so a 4th wheel would just be unnecessary weight. Tricycle wheel arrangements are also better suited to landing in crosswinds.
Aircraft also have other needs like wings. Whether they're fixed wings like an airliner or rotary wings like a helicopter, to generate enough lift they have to be much larger than the restricted freeway lanes and parking spaces would allow. So most designs for flying cars have wings that are either detachable (可拆卸的)or foldable.
That hasn't stopped some people from trying, and now one Dutch company, PAL-V, thinks their Liberty design has made flying cars a practical reality.
In 2005, the company discovered the work of another Dutch company, Carver, which made 3-wheeled cars that leaned like motorcycles. As for generating lift, PAL-V chose a rotary design called autogyro. Unlike a helicopter, the rotor (旋转翼)of an autogyro is unpowered in flight. Instead, the air flowing over it causes it to spin and generate lift. Autogyros also have short takeoff and landing requirements, so setting one down in an emergency is less dangerous than in a fixed-wing aircraft.
The Liberty received road certification in Europe in October of 2020, hoping to deliver to their first customers starting in 2022.
12. What can be learned from Paragraph 1
A. Flying cars have long been dreamed of by humans.
B. The coexistence of cars and airplanes satisfies people.
C. The car and the airplane are less popular nowadays.
D. Cars and airplanes were invented at the same time.
13. Why are the needs like wings and the number of wheels mentioned
A. To compare vehicles like cars and airplanes.
B. To explain the functions of wings and wheels.
C. To present two major problems to be solved.
D. To show the basic rules of vehicle designs.
14. What is the advantage of Liberty over a traditional airliner
A. It can be controlled more easily.
B. Its take-off needs less space and time.
C. It consumes less power when flying.
D. Its landing is less dangerous in emergency.
15. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage
A. Europe gives Liberty a warm welcome.
B. Flying cars will replace the other vehicles.
C. Liberty can be seen globally once marketed.
D PAL-V succeeds in making flying cars a reality.

Our wedding was about to begin. My throat was tight and my cheeks got red, but I didn't care. I was ready to marry David Sanchez. We’re a "nontraditional" couple: getting married not at a church but in a bookstore that supports a charity to fight H.I.V. and homelessness.
“Kim! I could walk you down the aisle(走廊)if you like!” David's father offered gently.
"I'm OK. But I appreciate that,” I said with a smile. And I was reminded, again, of my dad's absence.
My father died of cancer six weeks ago. For the last two months, we tried to make him feel comfortable and loved as he departed from this world. He always told us that he didn't like a funeral (葬礼)and insisted our wedding go forward as planned. But how could we honor him since the wedding would be the first time the family would gather after his death and some even didn't know he was sick
During the ceremony, my dear friend Eva delivered a reading entitled "When Things Go Missing” by Kathryn Schulz. She paused and got everyone on the same page: “When we are experiencing it, loss often feels like confusion in the usual order of things. In fact, the entire plan of the universe consists of losing, and life amounts to a reverse(逆向的)savings account in which we are eventually robbed of everything.
I felt the energy full of the room. Everyone was listening. By choosing to accept the pain, we knew what a wedding does to join two families and mark the next chapter for a couple. Loss became a compass that pointed us away from a fantasy and toward celebrating the difficult realities of life.
After rings were exchanged, fried chicken was served, our friends offered so many funny and touching toasts, and finally David sang "Married” on my father’s guitar. I felt joy filling all the holes in my soul. Celebrating my father’s life at our wedding made me grateful for all the time I had spent with him, because it all goes by so fast.

7. What do we know about Kim and David’ s wedding ceremony

There were far fewer cars on the streets and crowds were not seen in the shopping malls in Central China's Wuhan on Jan 24 — the Eve of the Chinese New Year. The scene was quite different from the occasion in the previous years because of the novel coronavirus, which had resulted in 41 deaths in China by the end of New Year's Eve, mostly in Wuhan, according to the National Health Commission.
Chen Li, a doctor in a Wuhan hospital, spent the Chinese Lunar New year's Eve at home to quarantine herself for having had contact with infected patients, but luckily she has no signs of symptoms for the time being. Chen's husband is at the forefront of the fight against the epidemic (流行病). "We haven’t seen each other for over a week,” said Chen. On Saturday morning, she put on protective clothing again and returned to work.
Wuhan is following Beijing’s SARS treatment model in 2003 to build a makeshift hospital with 1,000 beds for receiving infected patients. It will be completed and put into use prior to Feb 3, less than 10 days away. “It’s going to be another all-nighter. We need to speed up the work,” said Lyu Jun, a young truck driver at the construction site. This is his first Spring Festival away from home.
For ordinary people, this year's Lunar New Year's Eve lacks some gatherings. Yin Yeqiong, from Hunan Province, refunded (退掉)her tickets back home after much debate. “I had it in my mind to still go home, but finally decided to stay in Wuhan,” she said. “Our stay will help reduce panic in other places."
Doctors, nurses and experts from across the nation have been selected to join the battle, and manufacturers have restarted their plants to produce medical consumables that have been running short in many places.
“This is going to be an unforgettable Spring Festival,” said Chen Ying, a writer. ''Because I feel that at this moment, there are so many families that I do not know, in every corner of this city, praying for our home."
8. What does the underlined word "quarantine" mean in paragraph 2

B. She was eager to work as a volunteer.
C. She didn't want to cause unnecessary trouble.
D. She was not allowed to go back to her home.
10. What does the text intend to tell us
A. The Chinese are fighting against the epidemic together.
B. The epidemic is not so serious that we can enjoy our normal life.
C. Coronavirus, a highly infectious disease, is spreading around China.
D. Not until the makeshift hospital is completed will the doctors find the cure.
11. What can we learn from the text
A. The Spring Festival in China this year is the same as before.
B. Chen Li and her husband are fighting against coronavirus in Wuhan.
C. Lyu Jun and his coworkers will help complete the hospital in Bering.
D. There is no need to worry because we have plenty of medical consumables.

An argument is an exchange of views between people who do not agree. Some arguments turn into angry quarrels. Suppose, a friend borrowed your car and left it full of fast-food rubbish. What if you dealt with the situation this way:
YOU: Why did you leave all that trash in my car It's an absolute mess, and I'm tired of you always being so inconsiderate.
FRIEND: Look who's talking. You're such a slob(邋遢鬼), I didn't think you'd notice. How did a minor incident turn into such an unpleasant exchange You were angry and feeling as though your kindness was being abused. So instead of talking with your friend, you yelled at him. "Why did you" was a challenge. That's why your friend immediately went on the defensive and yelled back.
Now the argument is over. In fact, you don't feel satisfied that you've told him off! During the heat of the moment, he said something that hurt your feelings. And perhaps you didn't really mean what you said.
How can you avoid such situations Learn to argue in a better way. Try something like this:
YOU: I don't like it when you leave trash in my car. It makes me feel like you don't respect me.
FRIEND: You're right. It was very inconsiderate. I won't do it again.
Before speaking, take a deep breath and get control of your anger. The words you use will let your friend know specifically what is bothering you and most importantly, treat him with respect. So he will respond in the same way.
Also notice that begin the argument with the pronoun "I". An argument beginning with “You did..." is generally a challenge. What usually follows is criticism or an insult. And it goes downhill fast from there.
Using “I” in arguments won't eliminate all disagreements. But it can certainly cut down on the yelling.
12. How may you feel after an unpleasant argument with your friend
A. Angry and hurt. B. Still wanting to argue.
C. Satisfied with the yell. D. Challenged by the argument.
13. Which can probably replace the underlined phrase “ During the heat of the moment”
A. When the weather is hot outside.
B. When the talk becomes exciting.
C. When the argument gets emotional.
D. When your friend is warmer than ever.
14. Which sentence might be used in an “I” argument
A. You are making me feel bad.
B. What's the matter with you
C. What on earth are you telling me
D. It makes me feel bad when hearing that.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Winning arguments with other people.
B. Making sure that people do what you want
C. Using the “I” method to communicate better.
D. Avoiding having disagreement with ftiends.
