The Science of Fear
Home alone at night, you hear a loud crash. In an instant your heart starts racing, your muscles tense and your breath quickens. You are immediately alert, prepared to fight or flee the source of the sound, which tums out to be a pile of books falling off that shelf you've been meaning to fix. ___31___
Fear is one of our strongest and most basic emotions. It's a big bad world out there, and being afraid of certain things protects us from potential danger to make sure we survive. Some evolutionary fears are hard-wired into our brains, but we can also develop new fears throughout our lives. As children we pick up on what makes our parents anxious, and we may also learn to fear certain things after negative experiences. ___32___ We can enjoy the view from the top of a skyscraper rather than worry about falling, or turn out the light-safe in the knowledge that a wolf won't swallow us in the night.
However, people with phobias have an extreme fear response that causes both physical and psychological suffering. ___33___ Agoraphobia is generally referred to as the fear of open spaces, but it applies to the dread of any situation that is difficult to escape from, or where help would not be available if something went wrong. Social phobia is the intense fear of interacting with people or performing, while specific phobias are the fear of a particular situation, activity or thing. ___34___ Somebody with acrophobia - an extreme fear of heights — may experience a panic attacl, stmpl trying to walk across a bridge. Depending on the cause of their phobia, sufferers often try their best to avoid situations that could affect them.
___35___ For example, somebody may develop cynophobia— the fear of dogs—after being bitten. But whether the cause is rational (理性的) or irrational, as soon as the brain notices a scary stimulus (刺激物), it activates the fight-or-flight response, thus preparing the body for action.
A. Then, how can it be overcome
B. These irrational fears can cause major disturbance to everyday life.
C. But in that moment, your brain and body reacted as if you were in extreme danger.
D. Despite this, most of us are able to ignore our fears when it's clear we aren't in any immediate danger.
E. Our brains warn us of the risks that might lie ahead, but then we often get prepared and overcome them.
F. These extreme fears are divided into three different groups: agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobias.
G. The cause of phobias is not always clear, but many cases are linked to experiencing or witnessing unpleasant events.

American girl Radajere Oleita thinks she may have a solution for two of our country’s persistent problems: garbage and poverty. 31 . The 26-year-old student and environmentalist from Detroit is asking a favor of local snack lovers: Don’t toss your empty chip bags into the trash. Donate them so she can turn them into sleeping bags for the homeless instead.
Chip eaters drop off their empty bags from Lay’s, and other favorites. And they are often seen at two locations in Detroit: a print shop and a clothing store. 32 . After they clean the chip bags in soapy hot water, they slice them open, lay them flat, and iron them together. They use padding and liners from old coats to line the insides.
33 . And each takes around 150 to 300 chip bags, depending on whether they’re single-serve or family size. The result is a sleeping bag that is “waterproof, lightweight, and easy to carry around,” Oleita told the Detroit News.
Since its start in 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected more than 800,000 chip bags and, as of last December, created 110 sleeping bags. Sure, it would be simpler to raise the money to buy new sleeping bags. But that’s only half the goal for Oleita — whose family moved to the United States from Nigeria a decade ago with the hope of attaining a better life — and her fellow volunteers. 34 .
And, of course, there’s the symbolism of salvaging bags that would otherwise land in the trash and using them to help the homeless. 35 . We can be reminded that environmental injustice and poverty often go hand in hand. As Oleita told : “I think it’s time to show connections between all of these issues.”
A. It’s a powerful reminder.
B. Chip eaters consume too much.
C. It’s called the Chip Bag Project.
D. The project was such a great success.
E. It takes about four hours to sew a sleeping bag.
F. That’s where Oleita and her volunteer helpers collect them.
G. She believes that they are dedicated to making an impact both socially and environmentally.

Agriculture has come a long way from its ancient beginnings. Long ago, farmers would work hard on their individual plots of land, using simple tools or even their bare hands. They tended to their crops for many hours each day so that the crops grew well. 31 For example, a single storm could destroy a whole year's work, while a summer of good weather could ensure a good harvest.
Modem science and technology have helped to greatly reduce the back-breaking labour involved in faming, along with the reliance on luck and guesswork. 32
Probably one of the most beneficial innovations is drip irrigation, which has made it possible to develop big, green farms in the middle of the desert. Simcha Blass, an Israeli scientist, discovered this new way of irrigation in the 1930s. Through this discovery, farmers can now produce crops on dry land without needing much water. 33 The limited and focused use of just the right amount of water also denies moisture (水分)to weeds and pests, keeping them from harming the crops.
34 However, what if an area has plenty of water, but little usable soil As it turns out, it is possible from plants without using soil at all. With hydroponics (水培),plant roots are supported by rocks. Nutrient-rich water is then provided so that the plants can grow. Recent research has centered on vertical hydroponics farming. With a vertical farm, the crops are planted in containers that are piled into skyscrapers. 35
With such technological advances, the image of a farmer pushing a plough will eventually become a of the past.
A. Luck played a great part in farming.
B. Some areas would be too dry to grow crops.
C. Drip irrigation deals with a lack of water in an area.
D. There have been experiments to make drip irrigation a reality.
E. This irrigation method uses far less water than other methods.
F. Furthermore, nearly all hydroponic farms partially or fully automated.
G. Farmers have benefited greatly from innovations in crop production.

Beating Burnout and Compassion Fatigue in the New Year
This year has continued to bring many of us closer to the pain, suffering and exhaustion of those experiencing burnout and compassion fatigue (疲倦). There is no doubt that 2021 has been filled with additional challenges. __31__
The data is clearly showing that our workforce shares feelings of burnout. A recent Gallup report indicated that 67% of us feel burned out either some or most of the time. At an organizational level, Hogan reports that burned out employees are 18% less productive and 2. 6 times more likely to be actively seeking a different job.
Fatigue and burnout arise not when we fail to get sufficient rest but when we fail to appreciate the moments of purpose and joy in our lives.
There are a few myths around burnout and compassion fatigue:
Myth 1: Burnout is an individual's problem.
Many people believe that burnout is about an individual who needs to "figure it out". __32__ Team structure offers critical support and leaders should create environment where team burnout is addressed.
Myth 2: __33__
Surprisingly, the individuals most likely to experience burnout are committed employees and leaders who love their job and are highly engaged. These top performers are the people you are most likely to lose.
Myth 3: People who experience burnout are just less resilient.
Research shows a correlation between higher levels of resilience (复原力) and lower levels of burnout. __34__ But resilience looks very different now from five years ago, and my guess is that it will continue to shift.
If 2021 has taught us anything, it is that we cannot separate burnout from our emotions, whether they may be fear, anger, shame or guilt. __35__
A. While fatigue is more sudden and results from carrying the pain and suffering of others, what we experience is similar.
B. Burnout results from lack of responsibility.
C. Burnout hurts individuals' enthusiasm and passion.
D. At this point, burnout and compassion fatigue has expanded into many aspects of our lives.
E. But burnout occurs at different levels and is the result from challenges to individuals, teams and organizations.
F. At one point, people believed resilience was established by "sucking it up", or “just staying positive".
G. And the path forward requires us to deepen the relationship with feelings of joy, passion, pride and fulfillment.

根据前文“You are immediately alert, prepared to fight or flee the source of the sound, which tums out to be a pile of books falling off that shelf you've been meaning to fix. ”(你要马上警惕起来,准备好要么反抗,要么逃离声音的来源,结果证明声音来自一堆从书架上掉下来的书,这个书架你一直想修好它。)可知,空白处可以承接上文描述在声音发生时你的感觉。选项C“但在那一刻,你的大脑和身体的反应,就好像你处于极度危险之中。”,that moment 指代前文 a pile of books falling off that shelf。
2.根据前文“As children we pick up on what makes our parents anxious, and we may also learn to fear certain things after negative experiences.”(当我们还是孩子的时候,我们知道什么让我们的父母感到焦虑,我们也可能在经历了消极的事情之后,学会害怕某些事情。) 下文“We can enjoy the view from the top of a skyscraper rather than worry about falling, or turn out the light-safe in the knowledge that a wolf won't swallow us in the night.”(我们可以从摩天大楼的顶部欣赏风景,而不用担心会掉下来,或者关掉灯光保险箱,因为我们知道狼不会在晚上把我们吞下去。)
3.根据下文“Agoraphobia is generally referred to as the fear of open spaces, but it applies to the dread of any situation that is difficult to escape from, or where help would not be available if something went wrong. Social phobia is the intense fear of interacting with people or performing, while specific phobias are the fear of a particular situation, activity or thing.
4.根据前文“Agoraphobia is generally referred to as the fear of open spaces, but it applies to the dread of any situation that is difficult to escape from, or where help would not be available if something went wrong. Social phobia is the intense fear of interacting with people or performing, while specific phobias are the fear of a particular situation, activity or thing. ”(广场恐惧症通常被称为对开放空间的恐惧,但它适用于任何难以逃脱的情况的恐惧,或者如果出了问题就得不到帮助的情况。社交恐惧症是对与人交往或表演的强烈恐惧,而特定恐惧症是对特定情况、活动或事物的恐惧。)举例这些恐惧给我们日常生活带来的干扰。选项B“这些不合理的恐惧会对日常生活造成很大的干扰。”These irrational fears 指代前文提到的 agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobias。 故选 B。
5.空白处为本段的总起句,根据下文“For example, somebody may develop cynophobia— the fear of dogs—after being bitten. ”(例如,有人可能在被咬后患上犬恐惧症——对狗的恐惧。)举例说明恐惧症产生的原因可能和我们日常的一些不愉快的经历有关。 所以此处应总说恐惧症的原因可能会和我们的经历有关。选项G“恐惧症的原因并不总是很清楚,但许多病例都与经历或目睹不愉快的事件有关。”,故选 G。
