My husband has been out of town for work this past week. When he travels, he typically is only gone for a day or two, but this time it was a few days longer. He was set to come home last night, but as he boarded the plane his flight was announced canceled and he had to return to the hotel to wait for the next fight. He learned very quickly the city was struggling due to high crime rate. He was not able to get a Uber or taxi at 4:30 a.m. to get to the airport for his flight due to workers being fearful of their lives. When I told my kids dad was not going to be home that night, they were both upset.
My husband was the head coach of my 5-year old’s baseball team. They had a game the next morning and my husband was trying so badly to make it home in time. The thought of possibly missing our son’s game really made him mad. He wanted to be there because this was their thing and he didn’t want to let him or the other boys down.
A young man by the name of Asher, who worked at the hotel my husband stayed at, overheard my husband’s dilemma. He realized he was not able to get transportation to the airport. This young man offered to wake up and get my husband to the airport at 4:30 a.m. My husband was in shock — a complete stranger would offer to do such a big act of kindness. When he called me to tell me the possible ride, he was so hopeful. This young man honored his word and brought my husband to the airport safely.
I didn’t want to get my son’s hopes up, so I told him, “Dad is trying to get home for your game but I am not sure whether he will make it.” That morning, on the way to the baseball field, both my kids looked up in the sky the entire ride to the field and pointed at planes in the sky saying, “Maybe that’s dad’s plane.”

THE TEACHER’S HAND
Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class a fun assignment — to draw a picture of something for which they were thankful.
Most of the class might be considered economically disadvantaged, but still many would celebrate the holiday with turkey and other traditional goodies of the season. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her student’s art. And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture. Douglas was a different kind of boy. He was the teacher’s true child of misery, weakness and unhappiness. His father died in a car accident and the driver wasn’t turned up yet. When first introduced to the teacher, the tiny shy boy greeted her in a timid tone, with his head down. She felt as if her heart was broken when he hesitated back and forth, glancing now and then at other kids playing games. She promised that she would help him out. As other children played on the playground, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side, one hand in hers. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand. Nothing else. Just an empty hand.
His abstract image attracted the imagination of his classmates.___________________

I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

With a broad smile on her lips, 15-year old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, “No time, baby. Right now I am busy with an important talk. Just wait for some time, OK ”
Holding her oil painting, she frowned(皱眉), and then searched for her dad.
“Dad, see what I have done,” Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her, and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks, Sirin replied angrily, “Dad, you haven’t seen it yet.”
He smiled at her saying, “No time, baby. I will see it later.” He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom. Hot air was blowing from her nostrils(鼻孔);her face turned into apple red. She threw the painting on the table, slammed(把...砰地关上)the door and threw herself on her bed.
“Why is everybody so busy ” She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school, middle school and even in high school too! She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception. Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner. Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn’t look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail, her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior. Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind, Softly, she asked, “Honey, did I do anything wrong ”

The icy wind howled across the empty street and it was an unusually quiet day in the emergency room on December 25th. Quiet, that is, except for the nurses who were standing around the nurses’ station complaining about having to work on Christmas Day.
I was a guiding nurse that day and had just done the cleanup in the waiting room. Since there were no patients waiting to be seen at the time, I returned to the nurses’ station for a cup of hot coffee that someone had brought in for Christmas. Just then, a colleague came in and told me I had five patients waiting to be evaluated.
I was surprised, “Five How did I get five I was just out there and no one was in the waiting room. ”
“Well, there are five signed in. ”
So I went straight out and called the first name. Five bodies showed up at my guiding desk, a pale short woman and four small children in untidy clothing.
“Are you all sick ” I asked. “Yes, " she said weakly and lowered her head.
“Okay, ” I replied. “Who’s first ” One by one they sat down, and I asked the usual beginning questions. When it came to the description of their symptoms, things got a little vague(含糊的). Two of the children had headaches, but the headaches weren’t accompanied by the normal body language of holding the head or trying to keep it still. Two children had earaches, but only one could tell me which ear was affected. The mother complained of a cough, but seemed to work to produce it.
Something was wrong with the picture. Suddenly I knew something. So I explained to the mother that it might be a little while before a doctor saw her because there were several more critical patients. she responded, “Take your time. It’s warm here and there is a Christmas tree. ”

Para. 1:
As we reached the baseball field, we were a few minutes late. The field was crowded with parents who came to watch their children’s game. Some were encouraging their children and some were telling them tactics. My two children hung their heads and walked reluctantly to the field. At this time, I also felt sad. How I wished their father had come, and unconsciously turned my head to look at the entrance.
Para. 2:
I saw a familiar figure and my son walked towards me. Gradually, he changed from walking to running. It turned out that the familiar figure was my husband-the father of my two children. He successfully came back in time. We were all overjoyed to see him back. He encouraged the children to perform well and said he would always watch them play. At this time, the children ran to the field happily.

One possible version:
His abstract image attracted the imagination of his classmates. Whose hand could it be One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer, because farmers raised turkeys. Another suggested it was the hand of a police officer, because the police protected and cared for people. Still others guessed it was the hand of Douglas’ mother, for his mother gave birth to him and fed him. And so the discussion went — until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other assignments, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and murmured, “It’s yours, teacher.” Feeling surprised, she recalled the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there, as she had the other students. How often had she said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most grateful to his teacher’s hand. Brushing aside her tears, she went on with her work.

As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything in place, I took a deep breath and began my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to enthusiastically dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

Possible version:
At this very moment, Sirin could no longer contain her anger. “Why is everybody so busy ” she roared, tears streaming down. She assumed that her mom and dad would feel proud of her great talent, would appreciate her painting. But she was disgusted with everybody having “no time” for her. “I hate you!” She screamed, grabbed the painting on the table and tore it in half. Shocked, mom threw her arms around her tightly, announcing regretfully and firmly, “Baby, I am so sorry! I promise this mistake will not be repeated.”
When back from school the next day, Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated painting on the wall. It was beautifully framed and just below the painting, it was written “We are so proud of you, our little angel!” On seeing it, she burst out crying. She ran to her mom and hugged her tightly as well, fully aware of her mom’s love. Recalling her mom’s stress from work and daily life, she was regretting her previous behavior. She ducked her head, apologizing, “Sorry, mom!” It dawned on them that though everything came and went, mutual understanding would stay forever in their family.

Possible version:
Then the mother turned and, with a smile, settled her kids in the waiting room. Feeling warm and comfortable, the children were obviously delighted and satisfied, who were attracted by the Christmas tree decorated with bells and flowers. The youngest kid was staring eagerly at the gifts under the tree, but did not ask for anything knowing those didn’t belong to them. The gentle mother looked a little upset due to the fact that she couldn’t prepare any gift for her children. Realizing they were homeless, I went back and told my colleagues what had happened.
My colleagues, complaining about working Christmas, turned to sympathy for the homeless family. Soon we were busy preparing presents for our unexpected guests, who just wanted to stay warm on Christmas Day. With gifts in hand, the kids couldn’t control their joy, whose laughter became quite infectious. The waiting room was filled with happiness and we were able to locate a shelter that would take the family in. As they were leaving, the mother hugged each of us and whispered, “You’re our angels and it’s your love that warms us up!”
