It seemed like it had only been a few years ago that Indigo had first rushed through our door. Her underbelly showed the signs of the litter she’d recently delivered. She had a nose for trouble. On one occasion, I had come home to find that she’d eaten a five-pound bag of flour. She was covered in white powder, and flour paw prints were everywhere, including, incredibly, on the countertops(台板). I asked the dog what the hell had happened, and Indigo just looked at me with a glance that said, I cannot imagine what you are referring to.
Time raced by. Our children grew up and went off to university. The mirror, which had reflected a young mum when Indigo first arrived, now showed a woman in late middle age. I had surgery for cataracts(白内障). I began to lose my hearing. We all turned grey: me, my spouse(配偶), the dog.
In August 2017, I took Indigo for one last walk. She was slow and unsteady on her paws. She looked up at me sadly. You did say you’d take care of me when the time came, she said. You promised, Jenny. She died that month, a tennis ball by her side. I’d owned a succession of dogs since 1964, each one of them a witness to a particular stage of my life. But with the loss of Indigo, all that was over. The days of my dogs, I now understood, were done at last.
But one morning, as I was passing the Bed ’n’ Biscuit in my car, somehow I pulled over. I could at least lay eyes upon one cute dog, a tiny sweet thing. What harm could it do She had a soft face.
Not long after, I got a call from the Bed ’n’ Biscuit, our dog daycare(日托所). One of their customers was leaving, and her dog which was the one I saw that morning, Chloe, needed a home. Given our recent loss, they asked, might our family be interested in adopting her

Saved by the Belt
My family is one of the lucky ones. We still have what we consider most precious — each other. It is Kathy Hezlep, our superstar, that has saved our family. Sitting at the porch, I am transported to the accident ten years ago.
As a mother, I have been blessed. I have a nice, smart, good-looking son who has given me much pleasure over the years. In the months leading up to Alan’s 16th birthday, there was a lot of excitement about his upcoming rite (仪式)of passage — the driver’s license.
About a month before his birthday, there was an assembly about seat-belt safety presented at his high school. One of the presenters in this program, Kathy Hezlep, had lost her son in a horrible car crash the year before. When Kathy was first asked to speak at this assembly, she was reluctant. Her son’s death had been extremely hard on her. She often felt helpless and discouraged, and she wasn’t sure how she could make a difference by speaking with this group.
But the school had convinced her to talk to the students. Kathy spoke about how hard it had been since the loss of her son. There were days when it was an effort just to get out of bed. She spoke directly from her heart and my son took her words straight into his heart. I remember Alan coming home that day and the two of us talking about the crash. We thought it was interesting that she was a single mother(like me)and that her son, Ryan, was her only child(like Alan).
Well, the big day finally arrived. The state of Florida, in its infinite wisdom, granted my “ child ” a license to take a loaded weapon and drive it! At the time, I thought the worst feeling I could possibly experience was watching my only child drive off alone in my car. I was wrong.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was 11:30 a.m, and the fishing so far had been fruitless. Not another boat in sight. Andrew Sherman spotted a speck (斑点) on the horizon. As the speck approached, it started to look like a boat. “Jack,” he yelled to his son. “A boat headed straight at us!” Unbelievable. Miles of open ocean, and this boat was on course to T-bone them.
The Shermans stared at the interloper (闯入者) in surprise. Four fishing lines out, music blaring, except there wasn’t a soul in sight. The captain must have gone below, leaving his boat sailing along at 10 mph.
“Follow it, Jack,” Andrew said.
Jack hit the gas. “Hey! Hey!” the Shermans shouted. Nothing. A horrifying new thought took shape: The captain had gone below, all right—and suffered a heart attack.
Father and son switched places, and Andrew drove their boat alongside the other while Jack jumped onto the other boat’s deck, bringing the boat to a stop. Then he ventured down into the cabin. He came back up a moment later. “Empty,” he said.
“It’s a ghost boat!” said father and son nearly at the same time.
Andrew called the Coast Guard. “Man overboard,” he told them. The two men could have left it, but they were curious: What happened to the captain The boat’s GPS system told them the missing captain had marked points along his route indicating good fishing spots. Then the points suddenly stopped a few miles back.
With Andrew driving the ghost boat and Jack driving their own craft, they headed for that last point. They were searching for what they feared would be a body.
What they didn’t know was that the ghost boat’s owner was alive in the water and growing worn out.
Two hours earlier, Sascha Scheller had been fishing when nature called. He leaned over to relieve himself, zipped up, turned back toward the helm (舵柄), and slipped.

A Farewell Party
We learned that our class teacher, Mr. Read, was about to be transferred to another school in a week. All the pupils adored Mr. Read as he was a very good and dedicated teacher. He never shouted at us and was very patient with the slower pupils.
Our class decided to hold a farewell (告别) party for this model teacher. But we needed to have the permission of the school’s headmaster first. Judy was given the task of writing to the headmaster for permission to hold the party as her handwriting was the neatest and her language skills were excellent. After the letter was written, all the pupils in the class signed the letter and six pupils, myself included, went to the headmaster’s office on behalf of the whole class.
The headmaster was mildly curious when he saw the six of us in his office. We gave him the letter of request and after reading it in silence, he frowned. He said that the request was very irregular but after the six of us begged him genuinely, he finally changed his mind and gave us the permission. He allowed us to hold the party during the last period of the following Friday, which would be Mr. Read’s last day of teaching in our school.
The whole class was excited after getting the permission. We gathered together after school and planned for the party. After some debate and discussion we finally agreed on the things we needed to do.
On the following Friday, after we came into the classroom, we hid the drinks, food, and the farewell gift — the “ Complete Sherlock Holmes ” — in a corner so that Mr. Read would not see them as we wanted to surprise him. On the last period of school, our class monitor, Aaron, approached Mr. Read just as he was about to begin the next lesson.
“ Sir, we have obtained permission from the headmaster to treat you to a simple farewell party. ”

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food. After Mr. Read’s speech, I was given the honour of presenting our farewell gift to him.

I had tried unsuccessfully to get Frank to the dentist for a good clean. He felt that cleaning his teeth didn't matter. Only after suffering for several days with a toothache did he finally agree, but under one condition. The dentist would have to treat him in his wheelchair. I called Dr. Bob, what was willing to satisfy my husband's special needs.
The big day arrived. It was a hot day in June. The office was easy to locate, but parking was very limited. We decided to take our chances and parked across the street at a place with a "No Parking or Towing (拖)" sign. After parking, we walked two blocks to the office. As Dr. Bob had promised, Frank didn't have to leave his wheelchair and after a few shots, the teeth were painlessly removed. Then we prepared to leave.
Frank uses an electric wheelchair with a breathing control system. He drives the chair by breathing through an air tube. Breathe in to go backward. Breathe out to go forward. His mouth was still too numb to control the wheelchair. Not a problem. I could drive for him.
Once outside, the chair was not responding properly. I had to push with both hands on the handlebars. I pushed the wheelchair with all my strength. The sunny day turned extremely hot with no shade between us and the car.
Exhausted, I stopped pushing. T have to stop and rest/' I told Frank. Frank had a brilliant idea. His mouth was too numb to breathe out, but he might be able to breathe in, which would move the wheelchair backward. I agreed without hesitation.
Ws continued moving backward slowly up the sidewalk as I turned my head from left to right looking behind me for obstacles in our path. I noticed several cars slowing down and the people in the cars looking in our direction as they passed. Only when two ladies stopped and asked if we needed help did I realize how silly we looked.

2022届江苏省常州市5月高考模拟英语试题(解析版)
【答案】 Para 1: I told them that we were sorry but we wouldn’t be adopting any more dogs. With Indigo, our baby dog passing away, our house seemed quiet as a tomb, messy and lifeless. The loss of Indigo seemed to deprive me of my love for any cute and lovely dog. What if I suffer the loss again Out of nowhere, the dog kept flashing through my mind and I was enchanted by that tiny sweet thing. Once again, I set off to the Bed ’n’ Biscuit and adopted that tiny sweet thing named Chloe, fearful but delighted.
Para 2: When Chloe entered our house, she was cautious, uncertain. Every time we hugged her, she stepped back a little, her eyes filled with anxiety as well as curiosity. With days going by, our passion drove her forward and she was willing to embrace us enthusiastically. Every time we returned home from work, happy kisses from Chloe would rain upon our faces and the house would immediately be turned into a sea of happiness. Fortunately, with Chloe’s company, our life was refreshed as if our Indigo were still here with us.

【答案】Alan had his license one week when the police called me Alan had an accident with his friends. The police informed me my son had been driving down a curving road, lost control of the car. Since he was an inexperienced driver, he didn’t know how to come out of the spin. He managed to miss a lake and a traffic sign in his path, but went full force into a light pole. Thankfully, he wasn’t going faster, because if he had hit the pole any harder, he and his two passengers could have been killed.
When I rushed to the hospital, I talked to Alan about the accident. He said that none of the kids had been wearing their seat belts when he started the car. But Kathy Hezlep’s words, spoken so sincerely and eloquently about her terrible loss, had impressed him so deeply that he insisted that everyone put on their seat belts immediately. That was what had saved their lives. I have unending gratitude, respect and love for Kathy Hezlep. She is not a celebrity but an everyday person; a mother who, despite her immeasurable loss, had the courage to speak out and make a difference and saved three lives.

One possible version:
Suddenly he was in the water. He grasped at the smooth boat, but it went gliding. He grabbed wildly for the swim ladder, but it slipped. In horror, he watched his boat zoom off, taking his life jacket with it. His only hope was to paddle a few miles back to where he’d last seen other boats. A moment later, he spotted a boat in the distance coming straight at him. This was his best chance at being saved. He began to kick wildly, making the biggest splashes possible.
Only when the boat approached did it dawn on Scheller: “That’s my boat!” “You have no idea how happy I am to see you,” Andrew Sherman said, pulling him up aboard and Scheller was fine. He’d been saved from drowning and was grateful the Shermans had taken the time to search for him. That evening Andrew got home. When asked how his day had gone, he said with a grin, “it was a slow day catching fish, but we did catch a man.”

A、原创
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food. Mr. Read was stunned, bewildered by the little farewell party. He received a freshly baked batch of chocolate cookies, which was made by our hands. “Have a taste!” We chorused expectantly. After the first mouthful, there was a very pleasant look on his face. “Thank you…all of you!” Tears welling up in his eyes, he said in a strangled voice. Then he delivered an impassioned speech, which was laden with emotion, and personal revelations. We followed Mr. Read's speech attentively, nodding and applauding constantly.
After Mr. Read's speech, I was given the honour of presenting our farewell gift to him. He was such a devoted fan of detective stories that he almost spent all his spare time indulging in deducing and solving puzzles. So he gave me a grateful hug after he gingerly unwrapped the gift, eyes glinting with appreciation. When the party was over and all of us were supposed to go home, he hesitated for a while, his eyes growing tender. “I won't say ‘farewell’, for this word sometimes indicates we never seeing each other again. I will say ‘goodbye’ as usual.” He bowed deeply and departed in the last rays of the setting sun, with tears streaming down his face.
B、官方范文
Immediately the pupils brought out the drinks and food. For an instant, Mr. Read was speechless and his eyes took on a misty look. Then, he was back to his normal self again. As he took his first bite of a cake, everyone cheered and clapped. After the meal, Mr. Read gave a farewell speech. He spoke for fifteen minutes, thanking the class for taking the trouble to hold the party and for being such caring pupils. His speech was also peppered with sound advice for us.
After Mr. Read’s speech, I was given the honour of presenting our farewell gift to him. We knew him to be a great fan of mystery and detective novels, so we had bought for him the “Complete Sherlock Holmes”. When he unwrapped the gift, we saw two large beads of tears rolling down his cheeks. He was very deeply moved. Just at that time, the school bell rang. It was time to say goodbye, and each pupil hugged Mr. Read for one last time before heading for home.

One possible version:
Of course I declined their assistance. I told them that we were fine and had everything under control. I didn’t think things could get any worse, but they did. Without warning, the rain poured down. “Oh, please. Oh please.” I said over and over in my head, “Let there be a superman, a volunteer or anyone to help me.” The clock was ticking away. Soon, we were all wet. The rain removed the heat from me, but meanwhile, I was worried that if the rain lasted too long, the electronics in Frank’s wheelchair would be affected.
Luckily, just as suddenly as it started, the rain stopped and I hurried to the parking space. The shining sun returning to a clear blue sky, I had to pick up the pace. As we neared where we parked, I spotted our car. It hadn't been towed away! Thank goodness! Our adventure came to a pleasant end. We continued walking to our car, relieved, giving thanks, listening to the beautiful songs of the birds and watching the leaves dance in the light wind.
