My daughter and I were fans of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, an educational children’s television series that was created and hosted by Fred Rogers, more commonly known as Mister Rogers.
Around my daughter’s second birthday, I had a Mister Rogers-inspired idea. Why not invite one key person in my daughter’s world to dinner each month The local children’s librarian could visit one evening, and perhaps the borough mayor (区长) could drop by a few weeks later.
But I wanted to start at the top.
“Let’s invite Mister Rogers himself, ” I said to my wife. “ After all, he lives just a few neighborhoods away. I bet he’d come. ”
She looked at me as if I wanted to invite the President. “ You really think Mister Rogers would come to our house for dinner Fat chance. ”
Undeterred (不气馁的), I sent a letter to Mister Rogers that fall, telling him of my newfound delight in his show and my idea for inviting neighborhood people over to talk about their lives, and asking him and Mrs. Rogers to be our guests.
I told my daughter about the letter. Her eyes glistened (发光). “ Mister Rogers coming Really, Daddy ”
One month later, no reply. My daughter hadn’t forgotten and periodically asked when Mister Rogers would be visiting. I always told her that he hadn’t called yet and that it was a good opportunity to learn about patience.
Two months later, no response. At the three-month mark, my wife simply rolled her eyes when I raised the topic. I was beginning to lose optimism. Mister Rogers had let me down.
Sadly, Mister Rogers passed away in late February of the following year. I was unaware of his illness and now understood why our invitation had gone unanswered. Mister Rogers would not be coming to dinner after all. Yet, even after his passing, Mister Rogers gave us a far greater gift than I ever could have imagined.

These days, Marathon des Sables runners carry a GPS tracking device and helicopters monitor their path to make sure no one gets lost, but when Mauro, a police officer, participated for the first time in 1994, there were no such safeguards in place. When you’re running through the largest desert on Earth, one wrong turn can cost you your life. Mauro Prosperi did just that during the Marathon des Sables, a six-day ultramarathon that many regard as the toughest foot race in the world.
The race was almost 156 miles long, taking runners across sand dunes (沙丘) with few natural sources of water. Temperatures in the Sahara could reach as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and each runner carried over 20 pounds of food, water, and emergency supplies on their backs. Most of these runners wouldn’t end up finishing the race, which was about the same length as six regular marathons.
That was how, on the fourth and longest days of the race, the runner Mauro encountered a severe sandstorm that turned him around and sent him wildly off course.
He spent eight hours waiting out the storm, huddled in a sand dune. The next morning, he expected to see rescuers heading his way. Instead, all he saw was desert in all directions. “After running for about for hours, I climbed up a dune and still couldn’t see anything,” he said. “That’s when I knew I had a big problem.”
A search party was organized to find Mauro, but rescuers had no idea he had been so far off course. Twice a helicopter circled over his head, and twice they didn’t see him wildly waving at them from below. He sent up his only flare (照明弹) and even set his backpack on fire hoping to catch their attention, but it was no use.
When Mauro’s water ran out, he began drinking his own urine. He found a marabout shrine, an ancient building that once served as a tomb. He took shelter from the sun’s rays there, drinking the blood of bats.
With his energy running out, he thought, “I am bound to die here”.

Mei Mei frowned as she helped her mother and father set out the cooking supplies in the shiny steel kitchen. Her family had just moved here from San Francisco, having bought a small restaurant, which was set to open in the next few days.
"Moving here was a stupid idea. I have lost all my friends in San Francisco. What should I do now " Mei Mei grumbled, mostly to herself.
" What's that " Her mother asked, opening a box and lifting out several pots and a wok(炒锅).
"Nothing, ” Mei Mei mumbled. The girl had been complaining about the move, but her parents had made the decision and were now too busy getting ready for the grand opening to listen to her complaints.
The first few days at her new school hadn’t been easy, either. She found it hard to talk to people she didn’t know, and it seemed like the students hadn't even noticed her. Mei Mei sighed and got back to washing dishes.
On the day of the grand opening, Mei Mei’s parents were all smiles, welcoming customers into the restaurant brightly decorated in gold and red. Even Mei Mei was in a good mood as she rushed around, seating guests, handing out menus, and pouring tall glasses of water. This was a big day for her family.
At one of the tables sat a family with two daughters who were about Mei Mei’s age. As she filled their glasses, Mei Mei realized the twins were in her class. Mei Mei ducked her head down so her long hair covered her face, and she turned away from the table.
Mei Mei’s mother found her soon after, in the kitchen loading the dishwasher. “Honey, what are you doing back here We need you out front with the customers. ”

A dawning sun shaped the massive form of the train. Loaded with fuel, water, and sand for power, the lead train weighed in at 410, 000 pounds. Conductor Robert, 49, ran his eye along the 96 cars behind him.
It was 7a.m. Robert had already checked the list of dangerous materials aboard the train.“We've got some gas with us,” he'd reported to his engineer,Lindley, in the cab(驾驶室). The presence of gas would mean taking extra care when braking the 6, 200-ton train. With explosive gas on board, an accident would be more dangerous. After a final external inspection, Robert jumped aboard. Slowly the train pulled out of the station.
Robert and Lindley had 50 years of railroading experience between them. They approached Lafayette at about 1:45 p.m. and slowed the train to the speed limit. Lindley turned on his flashing lights and warning bell. The two had been through the city hundreds of times, but they grew extra cautious rounding the first curve(弯道). Ahead, over just three miles of track, lay no fewer than
24 street crossings. As the train came out of the curve, Lindley noticed a small dot on the right rail about 150 yards ahead. He thought it might be a dog. Now, as the train approached within 100 yards of the object on the rail, Robert looked attentively. Then shock coursed through him.
“My God!” he yelled as a tiny face turned toward him.“It's a baby!”
Lindley had an instant decision to make, applying full emergency brakes with half the train still wrapped around a curve. He had to risk an emergency stop. Robert opened the left door of the engine cab quickly and stepped out onto a narrow walkway. He hurried to the front of the engine and crossed to the right side. He then stepped down to the lower portion of the walkway just to the back of the train's“cow catcher”.

The story of my new family member
We found a lonely dog a few weeks ago, walking along the road in the countryside. All of a sudden, he was jumping on cars, and at the same time we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere in the neighboring areas. As a consequence we passed him by without hesitation. A few hours later, on our return trip, he was still in the same place, again and again, making an attempt to get people to stop for him. When he caught sight of us approaching, he lay down in the middle of the road, so we failed to get around him.
My father braked hard, pulled up and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out whether anyone around from whom he had been separated. After getting off the car, we checked the dog carefully. It didn’t appear so. Then we took a good look at the poor but cute dog. He gazed at us eagerly with gloomy eyes. We circled around him in a total silence. We had an overwhelming desire to find out what was wrong with him. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any clues. He had no collar and he was really too thin. Eventually we decided that he had been abandoned. We showed great sympathy for the poor dog. How helpless he was on such an occasion! He was homeless and he had no one to rely on.
On seeing the scene, we couldn’t help begging my parents to raise him. My mother agreed excitedly, “I love this lovely dog. How poor he is! It is high time that we should bring him home.” She stared at the dog with tears welling up in her eyes. We knew my mother was willing to adopt the dog because she was so sweet and she loved dogs very much. My father thought it was dangerous to raise a dog due to the fact that we were too young.

【参考范文】
A week later, I was surprised to find a letter in our mailbox from Mister Rogers. With my trembling hands, I fingered the letter and read it word for word. He appreciated my daughter’s enjoyment of his program and thanked us for our invitation, adding that he was much honored to be our “ guest ” . But he apologized for not responding sooner and not being able to make it to our dinner party then due to his stomach cancer treatment. In a delightful tone he expressed his wish to meet some day. The one-page typed letter was like something from an old friend: personal and caring.
The letter is a treasured gift and his kind words touched my life and my daughter. We could never imagine it was written when he was then suffering great pains. Mister Rogers is gone, but his remarkable talents are left behind. Rogers never came for dinner, but his belief in the importance of being good neighbors is passed on. His spirits will never die: caring for people including the unknown, hoping for the future, and most importantly, posing a positive attitude to life whatever happens. When least expected, sometimes the best presents in life come from a special neighbor.

【答案】With his energy running out, he thought “I am bound to die here”. Feeling exhausted and desperate, Mauro left a goodbye note to his wife on the wall of the tomb and prepared to meet his untimely end. But at the thought of his family in the remote city, he woke up with new resolve and decided to face the challenge himself. So Mauro set off once more and hunted for insects and snakes to eat. By coincidence, Mauro walked into the camp of a nomadic tribe. They took him in and gave him goat’s milk and mint tea, eventually delivering him to safety.
After being treated in the hospital for weakness, he made a full recovery! His survival story is a journey of desperation and almost superhuman endurance! Most people would never set foot in the desert again after such an experience, but not Mauro. Incredibly, he has now run the Marathon des Sables more than six times! Mauro’s story reminds us that perseverance can help us push through just about anything life throws at us! In spite of the bad situation, he found a way to carry on.

【续写范文1】
“Mom, I don't want to be out there!” Mei Mei murmured, head drooping. Feeling Mei Mei in a bad mood, her mother asked her what was wrong softly. At that moment, Mei Mei couldn't help pouring out her troubles, “Without a friend, I'm isolated here.” Realizing they failed to care about Mei Mei's feelings in entirely new surroundings, her mother felt her heart sink. Holding her daughter in her arms, she apologized for her ignorance and suggested she make new friends by taking action first. What her mother said really comforted her and motivated her to take the first step. Suddenly, an idea popped into her head.
Mei Mei put a handful of cookies into a small plate and left the kitchen. She went straight towards the twins' table and put the plate on their table, saying the cookies were specially prepared for friends by her parents' restaurant. Amazed, the twins had their mouths open, for they had never seen Mei Mei as a friend. Mei Mei added that she was new here and wondered if they could be her tour guides on weekends. The twins nodded, sincerely inviting her to join them. Over chatting, Mei Mei found they shared the same interest— music. She pictured three little girls listening to music , her face lit up and lips curving into a smile.
【续写范文2】
“Mom, I don't want to be out there!” Mei Mei whispered, as if pleading with her mother not to let herself face the awkward situation.“What’s up, honey ” Noticing her daughter’s strange behavior and low spirits, her mother asked gently, wrapping her arms around Mei Mei tenderly. Tears welling up in her eyes, Mei Mei couldn’t help pouring out all her troubles in making new friends in the new school. Hearing out Mei Mei’s story, mother cracked a smile. “ Escaping is no way of making new friends. Face it bravely and I’m sure you can find the solution.” Mother’s words seemed to fill her with hope.
Mei Mei put a handful of cookies into a small plate and left the kitchen. Mustering up her courage(鼓足勇气), Mei Mei approached the table where the twins sat, placed the cookies down and smiled, “Welcome to my restaurant. Here are some cookies for you.” “Wow, cookies! Thank you!” So delighted by the surprise, the twins recognized her and greeted her warmly. It was the first time that Mei Mei had talked to anyone other than her family since she had been here. From then on, the twins often came to the restaurant for dinner and became good friends with her. Having got rid of loneliness, Mei Mei finally felt happy and warm again.

Robert's overalls were still spotted with blood. The train pulled slowly out of Lafayette.

My father said firmly, “If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all, the only thing we were in danger of was getting licked. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanked us for picking him up. The dog had clearly been on the road for some time, he was really too thin. So we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks striving to look after him with the hope that he would get stronger. Unfortunately, all our efforts were in vain. He was still very thin.
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appeared to be in good health. The vet guessed the dog was about two years old. He gave the dog all the required shots and sent us on our way. “Amazing! The dog is healthy.” My mother said in an excited voice. So thrilled were we that we headed home immediately. We did love our new family member. The dog was a sweet companion to our family, who was a quick learner and knew how to respond to different instructions. We learned a lesson from the experience that kindness and sympathy made a big difference to our life.
