Montreal is the second largest city in Canada and is the capital of Quebec. Until it was surpassed in population by Toronto in the 1970s, it was the commercial centre of Canada. Established by the French in 1642, it is the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, France. The official language of Quebec is French, and not English, and 95% of the citizens of Quebec speak French as their first or second language.
