Kathy's family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
“But my friends will be expecting updates about the trip, "Kathy complained. Kathy's mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Kathy handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
The drive to the beach house took most of the day. As they turned off the highway onto country back roads, the clouds darkened. Rain started to pour. "Even more beautiful in the rain," her mother said. " What do you think, Kathy " Kathy glared at her mom. "Beautiful, "she muttered.
That night after dinner Kathy wandered into the kitchen, where her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, "Couldn’t I have my phone back, just for one second Just so I can tell everyone what an amazing time I'm having ”
“Can't, "he said. "It's not here. Remember " Kathy was very annoyed. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookcase in the living room. The books looked as dull as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle. She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was past ten o'clock. She had been working for almost two hours! She yawned. The puzzle was less than half done, but she was exhausted. So, she went to bed.
When Kathy awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and threw open the curtains. A blazing sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Kathy of a photo that her friend betty had recently sent her.
This view was even better. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she wandered in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

Often, when he came to visit, my grandfather would bring me a present. These were never the sorts of things that other people brought, such as dolls, books or toys. My dolls and toys have been gone for more than half a century, but many of my grandfather’s gifts are still with me.
Once he brought me a little plastic cup. I looked inside, expecting to see something special. But there was only some loose soil in it, which made me disappointed. He smiled at me affectionately. Turning around, he picked up a little teapot from my dolls’ tea set and took me to the kitchen where he filled the little cup with water. Back in the living room, he put it on the windowsill(窗台) and handed me the teapot. “If you promise to put some water in the cup every day, something may happen.” he told me.
At that time, I was only five years old. This whole thing made no sense to me at all. I looked at him doubtfully and asked, “Do I have to water it every day What will happen ” He nodded to me with encouragement, “Yes, every day, dear.”
And so I promised. At first, curious to see what would happen, I did not mind doing this. But as the days went by and nothing changed, it got harder and harder to remember to put water in the cup. After a week, I asked my grandfather if it was time to stop yet. Shaking his head no, he said, “Every day.” The second week was even harder, and I became regretful of my promise to put water in the cup. When my grandfather came again, I tried to give it back to him, but he refused to take it, saying simply the same words, “Every day.” By the third week, I began to forget to put water in the cup during the day. Often, I would remember only after I had been put to bed and would have to get out of bed and water it in the dark. But I did not miss a single day.

It was a gift from your grandma. I lost it while cleaning the house! I feel like I’m missing my heart.” The children tried to comfort him. One granddaughter asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last time before it was missing ”
Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn!”

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My family's house was close to a road. And on the far end of the road stood a big tree. My parents, together with me, often crossed the road to the big tree to have fun with our neighbors. But I wasn't allowed to cross the road to go there by myself for my safety.
One day, for some reason, the big tree would be cut down. It was just before dinner time. A large crowd of neighbors gathered at the far end of the road to watch the falling of this tree. I watched from my house as the tree, tied with ropes, was lowered down. Soon, the huge tree fell safely to the ground with a big sound. But the kids and grown - ups didn't leave. They moved closer to stay around this wonderful old tree.
Like them, I wanted to touch the tree with my hands and say good - bye. But I was only five years old and wasn't allowed to cross the busy road alone. But as I became sadder when watching the tree nearly disappear, I thought to myself, “What's the worst thing that could happen ” I didn't see any cars coming, so I ran across the road to say good - bye to the fallen tree.
After standing around and talking with some of the neighbors, I realized that I had stayed there too long. “I am late for dinner, and I'm in trouble.”I told myself. Without even thinking, and without seeing if there were any cars coming, I dashed out between two parked cars and raced toward the other side of the road.
I didn't see a car rushing forward from the other end of the road. And the driver didn't expect I'd cross the road at that moment. When spotting me, he tried to stop his car, whose tires produced loud and unpleasant noises. But it was too late.

【答案】After a quick breakfast, Kathy headed to the beach. Under no circumstances had Kathy expected the scenery to be so spectacular! With the sea wind blowing against her face, Kathy totally lost herself in the stunning views. After half an hour's leisure walk along the beach, Kathy returned to the house. “How do I spend the rest of the day ” Kathy murmured to herself. Suddenly, the unfinished puzzle caught her attention. She felt a little excited and buried herself in it once again. Every time the shapes met, Kathy was overwhelmed with happiness. Soon, all that were left were a few gaps. She quickly put the remaining pieces into place. The puzzle was completed!
Appreciating the finished puzzle, she realized she hadn’t thought of her cellphone for hours. Trying to preserve the image in her mind, she quietly started taking it apart rather than taking pictures to update about the trip. That, she thought, was just for me. Without the distractions from her cellphone, she found herself engaged in story sharing session with mom and daddy willingly. They spent a high-quality family time together. On arriving home, mom gave her cellphone back. This time, however, she had no intention to share but to keep all the great memories in her mind. (189 words)

【答案】One morning, something amazing happened. At that time, I went to water the plant as usual. To my surprise, a small bud appeared in the plastic cup. Under the supervision of grandpa, I spent three weeks watering the soil, not caring about the result, just watering it, and it did give wonders to me! I told my grandfather with excitement. He gave me praise kindly and said, “Nothing in the world is difficult if you are willing to put your heart into it. Keep trying.”
This was perhaps my first lesson in the power of perseverance. I couldn’t help feeling that no matter how big a problem I encountered in my study. I could devote myself to solving it if I kept at it. Thank my grandpa for giving me such a precious plant. It is grandpa that let me understand that life on the road is easier as long as you don’t give up. It is possible to create a miracle! Therefore, whether it is to treat their own life, or treat their own work, the most important thing is to stick to it and act actively. There may be unexpected good harvest!

Paragraph 1:
Before knowing what had happened, I was struck down. One of my shoes flew to the edge of the road. The car passed over my body, and I was covered with oil, injuries and blood. For a moment, many neighbors were running towards me. And my parents were standing beside me. My mother was crying. My dad looked into my eyes and said, "Joe, I love you. The ambulance is on its way." And before long, I was sent to hospital.
Paragraph 2:
At the hospital, it was discovered that luckily I was not seriously injured. While the car drove over my body, the wheels never touched me. I only had minor injuries. My tearful parents hugged me. They reminded me that I shouldn't cross the road alone, and that I should always look in both directions for cars before taking one step into a road. They also told me I should use crosswalks when walking across a road. When growing older, I realized not all kids were lucky when breaking safety rules. I learned the hard way that day to respect the rules my parents set and to be more careful.

One possible version:
I was Joyce's turn t0 display his project. Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce's face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seal. And then Karan's team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan's team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team's project and congratulated on their success sincerely. That day Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.
