One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself very quickly. He wanted to be first to wish everyone a happy New Year. He looked in every room, and shouted the words of welcome. He ran into the street, to repeat them to those he might meet. When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother, and three children shivering with cold.
"I wish you a happy New Year," said Edward, as he was happily passing by. The man shook his head. "You do not belong to this country " said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak the English language. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, as if to say, "These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time." Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in a very difficult situation and required some help. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which doubtless meant, "We thank you a thousand times, and will remember you in our prayers."
When Edward came home, his father asked what book he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up. "I have bought no books," said he, "I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry."
Paragraph 1:
“I think I can wait for my books till next New Year,” continued he.

Hearing what his father said and holding the books his father gave him in his arms, Edward felt he was the happiest boy in the world.

Be a true runner
For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors(辅导员)and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one's first choice.
I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, “Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!” It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. “Fred! We need a 12 year old who hasn't been in other events to run the two mile!”
He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.
“But I don't know the way around the lake!”
“You're in. Just follow Bill!” Barry smiled.
Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, “When you make it to the last stretch(最后一程)on the field, just throw your head back and run.”
At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.
“On your mark... Get set...” The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill's heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, “Back off!”
I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.
It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

Snowflakes dancing in the sky, it was an awfully cold winter. Mary felt as gray as the sky outside. She struggled to get by the tough winter because her bills went up while her income went down.
Her refrigerator sat empty. Her only food consisted of peanut butter, bread and bananas, only enough for two sandwiches. Worse still, it would be four days before she got paid. As Mary prepared to sit down and eat half of her remaining food, she heard a knock at the door. Who could it be on such a freezing night Robbery scenes from films flashed across her mind. Then Mary shook her head and laughed at her foolish thought-no robber would choose her as a target. Opening the door, she saw a stranger standing outside, body trembling with cold.
“Madam, sorry to disturb you, but I'm lost and get stuck in the snow. Could you please spare a piece of bread " the stranger asked cautiously and politely in a weak but deep voice.
“I'm afraid not,” said Mary, “but I could make you a peanut butter and banana sandwich.”
“That sounds wonderful,” the stranger answered. "Mind if I wait here on the porch ”
“Yes, I do mind,” Mary replied, "but you could come in and eat it at the table.”
Not expecting both food and warmth, the stranger entered the house eagerly. Mary hurried off to the kitchen for the last four pieces of bread, peanut butter, and bananas. In a few minutes, she returned and invited him to sit down to eat what she could offer. After eating, the man thanked and said goodbye to her.
Looking outside, Mary hesitated a moment and said, "If you don't mind, you can sleep on the sofa.” "That would be good enough," responded the man gratefully.
Mary went into her room, and locked the door. The next morning, when she woke up, she remembered the man. "How will I tell him I have nothing for breakfast " she asked herself. She dressed, unlocked, and opened the door slightly.

Strange Footprints in the Snow
Jonathan woke up and looked around. For a moment, he wasn’t sure where he was. Then he remembered. He and his sister, Julie, were visiting Aunt Gwen. They had spent yesterday helping Aunt Gwen clean her basement. Today they would have time to play.
He looked out the window. Fresh snow covered the ground. He could hardly wait to go outside. Jonathan dressed and hurried downstairs to the kitchen.
“Hi, sleepyhead,” said Aunt Gwen. “Julie has already eaten her oatmeal. She’s outside.”
“That’s where I’m going as soon as I finish breakfast,” Jonathan said.
A short time later, he zipped up his coat, put on his boots, and walked out the front door. The sun made the snow sparkle. He looked around. He didn’t see his sister, but he saw something else. Strange footprints in the snow tracked across Aunt Gwen’s yard.
“They’re way too big to be Julie’s. They look like they belong to a dinosaur,” Jonathan said. Then he added, “But that’s silly. Dinosaurs are not around anymore.”
He looked closer: The footprints were the shape of a very large oval (椭圆) with a stem. “Maybe they belong to an elephant or a hippo that escaped from the zoo,” he thought. He held his breath and listened. He didn’t hear anything.
He remembered a book he’d seen earlier on Aunt Gwen’s shelf. It was a book about animal tracks. He dashed inside to get it. The book had pictures of animals and the tracks they made. He turned the pages one by one, but none of the photos looked like the footprints in Aunt Gwen’s yard.
He stared at those footprints again. An animal that made such big tracks would have to be heavy. Its tracks should sink far down into the snow. Yet these footprints seemed to skim across the top.
How can that be He wondered.
Jonathan noticed something else. The tracks never left Aunt Gwen’s yard. Instead, they turned and went around the house. “Maybe the animal is still here,” he whispered.
Quietly, he began following the footprints.

When I was a baby, my parents gave me anything I wanted. I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.
That was when the real estate market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.
Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie my mom would say “I’m sorry, honey but we really can’t afford that right now.” But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn’t used to hearing “no.” So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday, I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn’t know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.

2022届江苏省南京市第一中学高三下学期第九次模拟考试英语(解析版)
【答案】“I think I can wait for my books till next New Year,” continued he.His father looked at him with a blank look. He explained that it was a German family that was badly in need of help. They even didn’t have enough clothes to wear. Edward’s explanation made his father understand what had happened and he expressed that he couldn’t agree more with him. In order to recognize the work Edward did, his father bought the books, saying, “God invariably puts someone in a very difficult situation. Never can we turn a blind eye to those in need. What you have done will make a happy New Year.”
Hearing what his father said and holding the books his father gave him in his arms, Edward felt he was the happiest boy in the world. He felt the sweetness of helping others. A few days later, Edward met the family again, and they still thanked him a thousand times. It seemed the city was bathed in brilliant sunshine because of Edward’s feelings. Additionally, he knows that help means under any circumstances, we all can give a hand to people in a dilemma. Maybe bare words would be enough for them.

Mary opened the envelope and found a letter. It read, “It is harder to trust a stranger, especially when that stranger appears homeless. You have helped me restore faith in humanity so you deserve what you have received. "Mary had no idea what the stranger meant until she saw a cheque worth $ 10,000. Tears of delight welled up in her eyes. As it turned out, the stranger, who got stuck in the heavy snow and turned to her for help, was a successful businessman. 范文1
Quietly, he began following the footprints. He didn’t want to scare the animal away. There was nothing in sight except the strange footprints. Suddenly, there seemed to be some strange sounds ahead. Jonathan stopped and listened carefully. It came from the backyard. Thrilled, mixed with a little frightened, he quickened his pace! Swish, clomp, swish, clomp. The sound became clearer and clearer. Holding his breath, Jonathan peeked around the corner of the house.
That was when he saw her—his sister, Julie. She had something worn on both feet, which looked like giant tennis racket with short handles. She was walking on the snow back and forth happily. Noticing her brother, Julie waved excitedly, “See what I found in Aunt Gwen’s basement They are old fashioned snow shoes. Aunt Gwen said the shape helped walk steadily on the snow. And that is true!” Jonathan then laughed, “No wonder I couldn’t find those footprints in Aunt Gwen’s book.” There was no page for a snowshoeing sister.
范文2
Quietly, he began following the footprints. Now and then, he stopped, looking around and listening carefully. He still didn’t hear anything. All was quiet. He went on walking, following the footprints. Just as he approached the end of the yard, a faint sound came to his ears. Walking on tiptoe, he followed the sound and turned around the corner of the house.
That was when he saw her—his sister, Judie. She was walking on the snow with a pair of strange boots, the bottoms of which were made of two pieces of oval wood. Seeing her brother, Julie shouted excitedly, “Look! Amazing boots I found in Aunt Gwen’s e and have a try!” Jonathan laughed, “So funny! No wonder the footprints seemed to skim across the top.” He put on the shoes and stepped on the snow, with Judie hopping and clapping hands after him. Their cheerful laughter echoed in the yard.
范文3
Quietly, he began following the footprints. “What might it be, so big, but so light ” Jonathan racked his brains but in vain. It was so quiet that the sound of snow falling could even be heard. Though fear thickened, curiosity drove him to follow the strange footprints. All of a sudden, there, just at the corner of the basement, came a weak voice, “chuchu, chuchu”. Holding breath, he gathered his courage to take a step forward.
That was when he saw her—his sister, Julie. Seeing Jonathan, she made a funny face at him, inviting him to play together with the fresh snow. But what hooked Jonathan was the big shoes wearing on her feet. “Want to try the old snow boots I found them in the basement.” Julie said, cheerily. It was Julie that left the strange footprints! No wonder they seemed to skim across the top. Eager and excited, John put on these oval snow boots. Walking on the snow, there came another “big animal”, of course, with footprints sinking a little farther down into the snow this time!
范文4
Quietly, he began following the footprints. “Whose footprints are they What might happen to Julie ” Fear crept into Jonathan’s mind. He forced himself to trace the footprints quietly and quickly. To his surprise, those footprints disappeared before the basement. He tiptoed near the basement and there came a faint rustle. Jonathan looked through its small window, but nothing can be seen. He trod lightly to its door. He had just opened the door when a sudden “Ouch” gave him a start.
That was when he saw her—his sister, Julie. Behind a pile of cardboards, Julie was holding a finger pricked by a nail with an oval board next to her. Noticing Jonathan’s surprised look, Julie explained how she used the materials in the basement to make special footprints on the snow. Never had Jonathan thought his little sister could be a footprint maker. Jonathan joined Julie without hesitation. Bathed in the warm atmosphere, the two small inventors had great fun.
