Whatever your resolutions are, make sure they are still going strong. Here are some famous persons’ resolutions.
Gabby Logan, TV presenter
Resolution: to drink more water
I know I should drink two litres of water a day, but it’s easy to forget, especially when it's cold out. I’m going to fill my bottle and leave it in the fridge overnight so I won’t leave home without it and check in each night to see if I’ve drunk enough.
Sarah Stirk, TV presenter
Resolution: to meditate (冥想) more
With a newborn baby, I'll need to stay really calm. Meditation will help me deal with those stresses, so I'll work on that, as well as deep breathing and getting out in nature regularly. With a positive attitude, I use diaries to help me keep my resolution.
Desirèe Henry, sprinter (短跑运动员)
Resolution: to get quality rest
As I train so hard I need to ensure I also get enough rest. I’ve set an 8:30 pm reminder on my phone to slow down. Sometimes I can move really slowly, so I give myself plenty of time. At 10 pm, I’ll put my phone on airplane mode so I can't be disturbed.
Alex Davies, bodybuilder
Resolution: to schedule my time efficiently
I’ve taken a break from my job as an engineer to become a professional bodybuilder and train as a drone (无人机) pilot. I’ve never been busier! But without that 9-to-5 structure, I need to be focused. My top trick will be nightly diaries so I can write down my short-term goals and prepare a to-do list for the next day.

The deep, dark sea is a surprising area. Down there, it’s normal to happen on unheard-of never-seen-before animals and their interesting behavior. Sometimes, sources for precious new medicines are collected—and many more are almost certainly waiting to be discovered.
What marine scientists didn't expect to find, however, was a three-foot-long tusk (长牙) from an extinct mammoth (猛犸象) about 10, 000 feet beneath the ocean. Researchers collected the sample off the California coast in July 2021. “You start to expect the unexpected when exploring the deep sea, but I’m still stunned that we came on the ancient tusk of a mammoth,” Steven Haddock, a marine scientist at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, said in a statement.
Columbian mammoths, giant ice age mammals that stood some 14 feet tall, marched around what is now California as recently as some 11, 000 years ago. Paleontologists (古生物学者) are still pulling their well-preserved bones out of tar in Los Angeles. How did a tusk find its way to the deep sea It’s unknown, and likely will remain unknown. But land-dwelling creatures are sometimes washed out into deeper ocean regions, perhaps during great floods.
The intense cold and pressure in the deep sea excellently preserved the tusk. The research team plans to examine the fossil carefully and even determine the long-dead creature’s age. They suspect it’s over 100,000 years old.
“This deep-sea environment is different from those we have seen elsewhere,” mammoth paleontologist Daniel Fisher said in a statement, noting that most mammoth finds in the ocean are in much shallower waters.
“We know so little about the deep ocean that pretty much anyone can find something new if they were doing something unique down there,” Alan Leonardi, the director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, told Mashable last year.

In the near future, instead of going to your wardrobe (衣柜) to choose something to throw on for your next video call, you might turn to your virtual wardrobe to pick out a 3D digital dress to wear. At least, that's what a number of people in the fashion and tech space are relying on as more businesses look to the promise of digital fashion. Moreover, those virtual clothes won't just be for your video calls, but could eventually be worn all over the virtual world, and eventually, perhaps, viewed on your body in the real world through the Augmented Reality (AR) glasses.
“There are more and more second worlds' where you can express yourself. But there is probably an underestimation of the value being attached to individuals who want to express themselves in a virtual world with a virtual product, through a virtual image,”a marketing officer Robert said. As the field develops, there are two ways of using digital clothes—wearing them yourself through AR and providing digital clothes for your virtual body.
But why should we replace our physical clothes Supporters say there's unlimited creative expression through digital clothes, which now look increasingly more elegant thanks to developments in 3D and AR technology. “Clothing represents an expression of a personality. It always exists in the physical world, and it will exist in the virtual world,” said Simon Whitehouse, a designer.
He explained, “From the brand side, it's incredibly profitable to sell clothes without producing physical clothes. It's reinventing an entire supply chain. There's no water usage, there's very limited CO2 emission. There are no samples being sent out or returned. There are no show rooms, and there's no physical prototype (实物模型).”
12. What can you probably do in the near future according to paragraph 1
A. Open a virtual fashion clothing store.
B. Design 3D digital clothes for yourself.
C. Buy a bigger wardrobe for your bedroom.
D. Wear virtual clothes made by digital technology.
13. What can we infer from Simon's words in paragraph 3
A. AR technology will bring a challenge to people.
B One's character will be seen in the virtual world.
C. Digital clothes will be more convenient for people.
D. One's expression only can be seen in the physical world.
14. What is Simon's attitude to digital clothing
A. Approving. B. Doubtful.
C. Unclear. D. Grateful.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The increase in AR glasses. B. The digital fashion in the future.
C. The virtual body in digital clothes. D. AR glasses made by new technology.

As a youngster, there was nothing I liked better than Sunday afternoons at my grandfather’s farm in western Pennsylvania. Surrounded by miles of winding stone walls, the house and field provided endless hours of fun for a city kid like me.
Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never approve because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. Still, my idea to climb across those walls grew so strong that finally I had all my courage to enter the living room, where the adults had gathered after Sunday dinner.
“I want to climb the stone walls,” I said. “Heavens, no! You’ll hurt yourself!” the response was just as I’d expected. But before I left the room, I was stopped by my grandfather’s loud voice. “Now hold on just a minute,” I heard him say. “Let the boy climb the stone walls. He has to learn to do things for himself.”
“Go,” he said to me, “and come and see me when you get back.” For the next two and a half hours I climbed those old walls—and had the time of my life. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I’ll never forget what he said. “Fred,” he said, smiling, “You made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there’s only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are.”
Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. “There’s only one person in this whole world like you.” the kids can count on hearing me say, “and people can like you exactly as you are.”

If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect on the English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare,” “Samuel Johnson,” and “Webster,” but none of these men had any effect at all compared to a man who didn’t even speak English-William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoples belonging to two major language groups. In the west central region lived the Welsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whose language, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of the country lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and other Germanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (or Old English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had lasted, English today would be close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last. In l066 the Normans led by William defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about a century, French became the official language of Eng-land while Old English became the language of peasants. As a result, English words of Politics and the law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modern English even shows a distinction (区别) between upper-class French and lower-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually find Germany more "foreign" than France because the German they see on signs and advertisements seems much more different from English than French does. Few realize that the English language is actually Germanic in its beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man's ambition.
8. The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britain before l066 were

If there is no difference in general intelligence between boys and girls, what can explain girls’ poor performance in science and mathematics
It seems to be that their treatment at school is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly for boys, and therefore, as girls become teenagers, they are less likely to take them. Interestingly, both boys and girls often regard the subjects for boys as more difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls do not take mathematics courses, not because they are difficult, but for social reasons. Girls do not want to be in open competition with boys because they are afraid to appear less feminine and attractive.
However, if we examine the performance of boys and girls who have taken mathematics courses, there are still more high-achieving boys than there are girls. This difference appears to be world-wide. Biological explanations have been offered for this, but there are other explanations too.
Perhaps the difference which comes out during the teenage years has its roots in much earlier experiences. From their first days in kindergarten, boys are encouraged to work on their own and to complete tasks. Facts show that outstanding mathematicians and scientists have not had teachers who supplied answers.
Besides, there can be little doubt that teachers of mathematics and science expect their boy students to do better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear to encourage the difference between boys and girls. They spend more time with the boy students, giving them more time to answer questions and working harder to get correct answers from them. They are more likely to call on boys for answers and to allow them to take the lead in classroom discussion. They also praise boys more frequently. All of this seems to encourage boys to work harder in science and mathematics and to give them confidence that they are able to succeed.
Such a way of teaching is not likely to encourage girls to take many mathematics and science courses, nor is it likely to support girls who do. When it comes to these subjects, it seems certain that school widens the difference between boys and girls.

At only 9 years old, Lesia Cartelli was badly burnt in a gas explosion at her grandparents’ house. The burns were so severe that her own grandfather didn’t recognize her. Lesia could have remained withdrawn for her whole life. But now, this woman uses her painful past to help other burn victims find healing (治愈). “My life got better when I started to look at my life as a gift,” Lesia said.
Lesia started Angel Faces, a national nonprofit organization offering week-long supportive retreats (休养所) for adolescent female burn victims. These retreats, for girls ranging from ages 11-19, provide seminars to help the girls heal emotionally (情感上).
“She’s like a ball of sunshine,” said Casi Smith, a 17-year-old with burns on her face she received as a baby. “Looking at her, I can see everything she’s been through. But here she is; instead of hiding, she’s helping people. To me, that is amazing. I don’t know if I could ever do that.”
As a woman burned in a gas explosion, Lesia is able to connect with these young ladies on a personal level, as someone who knows what they’re going through. Her heart for helping others motivates fellow burn victims to take control of their circumstances.
All of these women are miracles. They are blessed to have survived horrible accidents most of us can’t even imagine. Yet, surviving the incident is just the beginning. Lesia describes the period following the actual event causing the burns as a “trauma cocoon”.

So many things can keep you from seeing your loved ones in person. Fortunately, thanks to modern technology, the people we miss are often only a phone call or text message away. But according to science, if you want to feel more connected to the people you’re talking to, you should call them instead of texting.
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, found that communication interactions that included voice created stronger social relationships than communication through typing.
In the study, researchers conducted various experiments. In the first one, they asked 200 people to make predictions about what it’d be like to reconnect with an old friend by email or by phone and then assigned people at random to do one or the other. Although people expected that a phone call would be more awkward, hearing someone’s voice actually made the experience better.
“People reported they did form a significantly stronger bond with their old friend on the phone compared with email, and they didn’t feel more awkward,” said study co-author Amit Kumar.
In another experiment, the researchers had strangers connect by either texting, talking over video chat, or talking using only audio. They found that both forms of voice communication made the strangers feel much more connected than when they communicated via text.
Sabrina Romanoff, a Harvard psychologist, says people tend to text or email instead of calling because of convenience as they see it as a controlled form of communication where they can “respond to information exactly in the way they intend without unexpected additions by the other person”. However, in fact, texting can make it hard to determine the true meaning behind a conversation. “A phone call is actually more convenient when considering the real effects of the message,” she explains. “Each party is more present, and therefore, able to understand the meaning behind the content without thinking over the endless possible meanings behind words.”
28. Which is the best for building closer connections according to the new study
A. An email. B. A video chat.
C. A text message. D. A letter.
29. What did the participants in the first experiment do
A. They made predictions on the others’ intentions.
B. They made random phone calls to some strangers.
C. They imagined the joy of hearing someone’s voice.
D. They predicted a phone call would be embarrassing.
30. Why does Sabrina Romanoff consider making phone calls convenient
A. It can improve your communication skills.
B. It proves a controlled form of communication.
C. It can make it easier to understand each other.
D. It avoids unexpected additions in conversations.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. You Should Call Instead of Texting B. Technology Builds More Connections
C. Communicate With Your Old Friends D. Voice Communication Is Time-saving
D
The South Pole has been warming at more than three times the global average over the past 30 years, according to research led by Ohio University professor Ryan Fogt, and Kyle Clem, who is a current postdoctoral research fellow in climate science. According to the study, this warming period was mainly driven by natural tropical (热带的) climate variability and was likely strengthened by increases in greenhouse gases.
Clem and his team analyzed weather station data at the South Pole, as well as climate models to examine the warming in the Antarctic interior (内陆). They found that between 1989 and 2018, the South Pole had warmed by about 1. 8℃ over the past 30 years at a rate of +0. 6℃ per decade—three times the global average.
The study also found that the strong warming over the Antarctic interior in the last 30 years was mainly driven by the tropics, especially warm ocean temperatures in the western tropical Pacific Ocean that changed the winds in the South Atlantic near Antarctica and increased the delivery of warm air to the South Pole. They suggest these atmospheric changes along Antarctica's coast are an important mechanism driving climate anomalies (异常事物) in its interior.
Clem and Fogt argue that these warming trends were unlikely the result of natural climate change alone, stressing the effects of added warming related to human activities on top of the large tropical climate signal on Antarctic climate have worked together to make this one of the strongest warming trends worldwide.
“From the very beginning, Kyle and I worked very well together and were able to accomplish more as a team than we were individually,” Fogt said. “We have published every year together since 2013, with one of our continuing collaborations being the annual State of the Climate reports. Our work on this project together each year ultimately led to this publication documenting the warming at the South Pole. However, most importantly for my family and me, apart from being a fantastic scientist and collaborator, Kyle is also considered as one of our closest friends.”
32. What is the major cause of the South Pole's warming according to the research
A. The weather station. B. Lack of winds.
C Increases of greenhouse gases. D. Natural tropical climate change.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The tropical climate signals in the Antarctic interior.
B. The effect of human activities on the warming trends.
C. The detailed explanation for the South Pole's warming.

34. Which of the following does Fogt most probably agree on
A. Cooperation is valued in scientific research.
B. Getting science paper published is difficult.

A family in Maryland wants to publicly thank a stranger for going above and beyond—just in time to bring a Happy New Year.
"What a great human!" That's how Laura Degnon began her email to GNN, hoping we would share the story of a good man touching their lives.
Her son, Jake, realized on Friday that he had lost his wallet Thursday night. It snowed a couple inches in Rockville overnight which made it challenging for them to find anything outside around his car, or at the last store where he stopped to buy a snack. "We shoveled (铲)so many places looking for it, "she recalled. They were very motivated, too, as his wallet was unusually full of "quite a bit of Christmas money, college money, and of course his school ID, license and credit card". But they couldn't find it anywhere.
Laura was up early on Saturday saying goodbye as Jake headed back to the University of South Carolina, and started cleaning up around the house, when the doorbell rang about 8:00 a. m.
"Much to my surprise, a wonderful man by the name of Juan was standing there asking if Jake lived here. I started to cry right away, and asked if he found his wallet, by chance. "
Juan had been up early, going to work on a Saturday morning, when he found Jake's wallet in the parking lot of the store where he bought the snack—-and he drove to their house to return it. Everything was intact, with nothing missing. "What a great human! Juan made my son's day, and mine, more than he will ever know! Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts. "

First, all participants found it quite easy to link colours and emotions. This was particularly true for colours like red, black, or yellow. Other colours, like brown and purple, received fewer associations. We found that colour-emotion associations were not one-to-one, but many-to-many.
Participants did not select one emotion for a colour, but often chose several emotions. In turn, different colours were linked to the same emotion, like pleasure, which was associated with red but also yellow, orange, pink, and purple.
What you can also see is that most colours were associated with positive emotions. Only brown, grey, and black—that is, darker colours—were associated with negative emotions. Red was the most controversial colour. For some, it was a very positive colour—the colour of passion, love, and desire. For others, it was a negative colour—the colour of danger, anger, and hate. For even others, it was both positive and negative. What connects all these emotions and ideas is the fact that red is activating and strong.
Second, we found few cultural differences. In other words, many colour-emotion associations seemed universal. Most participants agreed that pink was associated with love and pleasure, yellow with joy and amusement, or that black was the saddest colour.
Third, if you are interested in cultural differences, we found some specificities too. For example, in addition to the universal associations of love and anger with red, Chinese participants also associated joy and amusement, while Nigerian participants additionally associated fear with red. Another example is the association between purple and sadness that only Greek participants chose. For others, purple was generally a positive colour with very little agreement on the exact emotions associated with purple.
Fourth, participants whose languages were more similar to each other also had more similar associations. To arrive at this finding, we estimated the degree of linguistic(语言的)similarity between two languages, which shows how related or unrelated they are. And then, languages from different language families, like English and Chinese, would have the lowest similarity scores.
28. Which colour is most likely to cause controversy
A. Black. B. Red. C. Yellow. D. Brown.
29. What is pink associated with according to most participants
A. Love and pleasure. B. Joy and amusement.
C. Anger and sadness. D. Fear and disappointment.
30. Which group of people associate purple with sadness
A. Chinese participants. B. Nigerian participants.
C. Greek participants. D. English participants.

The 20th-century philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer considered the encounter between the viewer and a work of art to be a dynamic relationship. Meeting a work of art made in the past involves a reaction, an actual event, in the ing across the same work of art later will set up another event, another reaction, in which the artwork will be, as it were, activated afresh by the intellect and emotions of the viewer. When we interpret a work of art, we are teasing out(梳理)its possible meanings in the moment;but those meanings will change, depending on the viewer and the time.
Extend this thought into the world of the museum and it becomes clear that these institutions are not simply about the past. They are, necessarily, about the present. Paintings and sculptures of all kinds become meaningful in the"now"of their being viewed and considered. They shape us as we dig out new depths from them.
In a more purely functional manner, museums are increasingly embracing their capacity to be actors in the present worlds of their communities—rather than simply repositories(存储库)of things of the past, and gatherers and protectors of collective memories.
An example is Derby's Museum of Making, which both respects the city's history of manufacturing and aims to develop skills and inspire new acts of creativity. That in itself is nothing new, of course: part of the purpose of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London was to encourage innovation in design and manufacturing. But the Museum of Making takes things a step further—hosting, for example, sessions for teachers and educators on creating environments conducive to creativity, and"maker challenges"for teenagers. In so doing, it bridges the gap between museum and educational institution.
It is a welcome change. Museums, often in the teeth of terrible loss of income thanks to COVID-19 closures, are increasingly becoming ethical actors, as heavily invested in conversations about the kind of places communities want to be as what they once were. It should go without saying that they need to be properly supported to do this, by the government and local authorities. As the effects of COVID-19 continue to bite, the work of reimagining museums and communities is more important than ever.
32. Why does the author mention philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer in paragraph 1

A. Why to revive the museums.
B. How to get rid of the effects of COVID-19.
C. The measures to be taken to improve economy.
D. The importance of reimagining museums and communities.
35. What's the author's attitude to the change of museum functions

Insects have difficulty handling the rising temperature brought on by climate changes. The ability to reproduce is also strongly affected by rising temperatures, even in northern areas of the world, according to a new study from Lund University in Sweden.
Insects cannot change their own body temperature, which is strongly influenced by the temperature in their immediate environment. In the current study, the researchers studied two closely related species of dragonflies (蜻蜓)in Sweden. The goal was to understand their ability to adapt to changes in temperature.
To study this, the researchers used a combination of field work in southern Sweden and thermograph(热影像技术), a technology that makes it possible to measure body temperature in natural conditions. The information was then connected to the survival rates and reproductive success of the dragonflies in their natural populations.
The study shows that the survivorship of the dragonflies is high at relatively low temperatures (15℃~20℃). The reproductive ability is higher at temperatures between 20℃ and 30℃,
“There is therefore a temperature-dependent problem between survival on the one hand and the ability to reproduce on the other hand, ” says Erik Svensson, professor at the Department of Biology at Lund University, who led the study.
The study also shows that the dragonflies' ability to handle heat-related stress is limited. Insects are cold-blooded animals, so they rely on outside sources such as the sun or hot stones to raise their body temperature.
"Our results show that cold-blooded animals can suffer from overheating even if they live far up in the northern areas, and that their ability to change their body temperature against rising outside temperature is limited. The results also challenge a popular theory that animals' plasticity(适应性)can help them survive under harsher environment, such as during heat waves, "says Erik Svensson.
28. What is the purpose of the study
A. To find the relationship between survival rate and temperature.
B. To figure out the difficulties of northern insects' adaption.
C. To show dragonflies' ability to deal with changes in temperature.
D. To prove animals' plasticity in the hot environment.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The way of the study. B. The result of the study.
C. The importance of the study. D. The object of the study.
30. What can be learned from Erik Svensson's study
A. Insects'survival has nothing to do with temperatures.
B. Insects show low survival rates at lower temperatures.
C. Insects change body temperatures to improve survival rates.
D. Insects have higher reproductive ability between 20℃ and 30℃.
31. What does the underlined word "harsher" in the last paragraph probably mean
A. More comfortable. B. More difficult. C. More suitable. D. More pleasant.

In November, "NFT" was chosen as 2021's"Word of the Year" by Collins Dictionary. NFT is short for Non-Fungible Token. It is a "one-of-a-kind" property in the digital world that can be bought and sold like any other piece of property but has no tangible(可触摸的)form. Now, NFTs are becoming popular in the art world.
Unlike the traditional artworks that are made by hand and have their own special technique, digital arts can be copied and gained for free. But NFTs could provide a digital certificate(证明), showing the ownership of a unique virtual or physical artwork.
"In the digital world, you wouldn't know if something is a copy of something else because the copy is almost perfect. The NFT was the first to prove who owns this property, ” said Pindar Wong, chairman of Internet financial infrastructure consultancy VeriFi.
Along with protecting ownership, NFTs allow the ow ner to get a payment each time his/her work is sold. The artwork itself still belongs to the owner, and the buyers can get limited rights to show the digital artwork. So whenever the NFTs are sold, each transaction(交易) can only be made with the owner.
"NFTs can ensure that owners, including artists or musicians, can have a part of the income from every transaction, which could encourage their creations, " said Sylvia Wang, a consultant at business-to-business platform ArtBiz Asia.
That's why many experts believe that NFTs can greatly change the art industry. According to the latest report, in the first half of 2021, the sales of NFT digital artworks reached $2. 5 billion, an increase from just $13. 7million for the same period in 2020.
US artist Mike Winkelmann said that with the help ofNFT technology, the art field has entered a new time. He created a digital work of art——Everydays: The First 5, 000 Days. In March, it was sold for $69 million.
32. What is NFT
A. A piece of artwork. B. A kind of property.
C. A useful dictionary. D. A copy of something else.
33. What can we know about digital artworks
A. They have tangible forms. B. They hardly have any value.
C. They are very easy to copy. D. It's easy to identify their owners.
34. What does Sylvia Wang agree with

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“As a result, English words of politics and the law come from French rather than German.”结果导致,英语中关于政治和法律的词来源于法语而不是德语。“We even have different words for some foods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants were doing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of the eating.”
