There are several expressions about the natural weather of winter.
Hoar frost
One of the first signs of winter is the hoar frost of late autumn. This is the thin, feathery coating of ice that often forms on objects during cool nights with clear skies.
Frost flowers
Frost flowers are very thin, spindly, unique formations of ice, seen in late autumn or early winter, when plants are first freezing.
Glaze ice
When falling precipitation hits a surface that’s below freezing, it can instantly form what’s known as “glaze ice,” a buildup of smooth, clear, and transparent ice. It can be seen coating tree branches and plants following an ice storm.
Firn(粒雪)
When years and years of snowpack accumulate, that buildup is called “firn.” It’s much denser than regular snowpack, because of two factors: the partial melting during warmer seasons packs the snow mass closer together; and the new snow falling on top of the ultra-condensed pack pushes the crystals together without melting during the cold season.

Most of us go through life trying to do our best at whatever we do, whether it's our job, family, school or anything else. I feel that way. I try my best. But some time ago, I came to a realization that I wasn't getting much better at the things I cared most about.
Whether it was being a husband or a friend or a professional or teammate, and I wasn't improving much at those things even though I was spending a lot of time working hard at them. I've since realized from conversations and research that this stagnation, despite hard work, turns out to be pretty common.
What I've learned is that the most effective people and teams in any domain do something we can all emulate. They go through life purposely alternating between two zones: the learning zone and the performance zone.
The learning zone is when our goal is to improve. Then we do activities designed for improvement, concentrating on what we haven't mastered yet, which means we have to expect to make mistakes, knowing that we will learn from them.
The performance zone maximizes our immediate performance, while the learning zone maximizes our growth and our future performance. The reason many of us don't improve much despite our hard work is that we tend to spend almost all of our time in the performance zone. This hinders our growth.
We focus all our time on just doing our job, performing, which turns out not to be a great way to improve. But the people who continue to spend time in the learning zone do continue to always improve.
8. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 2
A. He is a professional.
B. He realized that this stagnation, despite hard work, turns out to be pretty common.
C. He spent a few time on his work.
D. He makes progress when he works hard.
9. What can we know about the performance zone
A. It can slow our growth.
B. We can make progress in this domain.
C. We have to spend a lot of time in the zone.
D. It can promote our growth.
10. How can we make progress
A. We need to spend a lot of time working hard.
B. We have to realize our mistakes.
C. We have to spend time in the learning zone.
D. We have to concentrate on what we haven't mastered yet.
11. What do we know from the text
A. The learning zone can help us make progress.
B. The performance zone is a good way to improve.
C. We focus all our time on the performance zone.
D. The learning zone always hinders our growth.
D
The phone in your pocket gives you powers that were hard to imagine five years ago. It can talk to you, tell you almost all the things you want to know. What’s more, it will even allow you to talk to your friends and communicate with almost anyone.
The problem is that these powers are not yours—at least they don’t belong to you alone. They belong to whoever controls the phone and can be used to serve their purposes as well as yours. Repressive organizations and criminal gangs are all attempting to break into phones today, and this kind of hacking will increasingly become the preferred route into all of the computer networks that we use—the ones we don’t call “phones”.
Apple' s sudden forced upgrade to the iPhone operating system was a response to these anxieties. A dissident in the UAE appeared to have his iPhone hijacked by a very sophisticated piece of malware produced by a security company and sold to regimes that want to spy on their enemies. This offers its controllers complete knowledge of anything the infected phone is privy to: the contacts, all the messages of any sort, whether chats, texts or emails, all the calendars and even, potentially, any voice conversation that it overhears. Once one phone has been subverted, it becomes a tool for spying into all the other networks to which it or the owner has access.
This is not exclusively Apple's problem. The much widespread Android system is reasonably secure only on some phones which are updated frequently and automatically to keep abreast of security vulnerabilities . Other manufacturers have access to the updates but few get them installed in a timely fashion. In the poorer parts of the world, the problem is especially acute.
Much more damage is done by “ransomware”, which encrypts and steals all of a user's data, to be released only on payment. Such assaults are becoming increasingly common. This is a global problem now. International efforts to police it are urgently needed and the companies that sell us these powerful phones must also be pressed to live up to their responsibilities to keep them safe so that their power is not easily turned against their owners.
12. Which word can be used to describe “malware” in paragraph 3
A. friendly B. ordinary C. spiteful D. official
13. What’s the damage of “ransomware”
A. It can encrypt and steal all of a user’s data.
B. It can be used to serve their purposes.
C. It can buy and sell almost anything.
D. It can allow you to talk to your friends and communicate with almost anyone.
14. The writer wrote the passage to___.
A. Sell us these powerful phones
B. Introduce this cellphone
C. It shows us how assiduous spies are
D. Users must all work together to keep themselves safe
15. The best title for the passage is “___”.
A. A security company
B. Internet Security: A huge and growing problem
C. AI Technology
D. A assiduous spy

For many comic lovers, Stan Lee is a superhero. Dubbed(取绰号) “the father of Marvel Comics”, he created an imaginary world with a list of superheroes, including Spider-Man and Iron Man.
On Nov. 12, 2018, the man who helped usher in a new era of superhero storytelling died aged 95. “There will never be another Stan Lee,” the US actor Chris Evans posted on the social networking platform Twitter. “For decades he provided both the young and the old with adventure, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy.”
Lee helped Marvel develop from a tiny company into the world’s top publisher of comic books and later a multimedia giant. But more importantly, he created many characters who wear magic costumes and do extraordinary things to save the world.
Before the 1960s, most comic book heroes were colorless, their dialogue rigid(僵化的), and the plots written for them predictable.
Lee gave them features such as anger, humor and pain. In his comic kingdom, leading roles are always a series of flawed superheroes. The comic figures live in the real world and struggle with everyday challenges, such as paying the rent. Spider-Man, for example, is worried about dating.
With so many works adapted for films, Lee also wanted to be a part of them. Like a big boy who likes playing, he made regular, humorous cameo(配角) appearances in movies or TV series, including an old man walking his dog in the 2018 movie Venom.
Lee said he faced questions about his career when he was young. Unlike people building bridges and doing medical research to improve society, he was only writing stories about fictional people who do extraordinary, crazy things and wear costumes.
He once said, “Entertainment is one of the most important things in people’s lives. Without it they might go off the deep end.”
4. What can we infer about most comic books published before the 1960s
A. Heroes in them have a lively mind.
B. Readers can guess the end of the stories easily.
C. Characters can do nothing to save the world.
D. They are full of adventure, confidence, friendship and joy.

A. He was born in the US in the 1930s.
B. He contributed to the development of Twitter.
C. He saved the world by creating many characters wearing costumes.
D. He was puzzled for not knowing how to develop his work when he was young.
7. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To remember a great hero.
B. To promote values of entertainment.
C. To encourage studies on comic books.
D. To introduce comic books’ development.

Extreme temperatures are driving a dramatic(突然的) decline in bumblebees across North America and Europe, according to a new study.
Researchers looked at half a million records showing where bumblebees have been found since 1901, across 66 different species. They found that in places. They places where bumblebees have lived in North America, you’re about half as likely to see one today.
“It’s these extreme events throughout the year that are pushing bees beyond what they’ve ever had to handle before,” says Peter Soroye, the lead author of the study published in the journal Science. “And that seems to be driving a lot of disappearances in bees”.
Bumblebees also don’t seem to be rapidly expanding into new habitats in search of cooler temperatures. They’re simply not able to colonize new regions at the same rate that they’re disappearing from old ones,” Soroye notes.
Bumblebees are crucial (关键性的)pollinators for natural landscapes. Just don’t confuse them with honeybees. Soroye says, “They’re just so much bigger. When they land on a flower, they vibrate(振动)the entire flower.” Their vibration pollinates flowers that honeybees often can’t. Crops like tomatoes and blueberries which keep their pollen tucked away need bumblebees’ help.
Scientists say that “we need to figure out ways to help species deal with climate change, because if we don’t do something, we’re going to lose species that are really important for ecosystem function.” In California, a legal battle has erupted between the state, agricultural groups and conservationists(环保主义者) over protecting four species of bumblebees under state law.
Still, scientists say there’s a lot that people can do. If you have a garden, fill it with native plants that the bees can go visit. They also recommend leaving fallen logs or leaf piles on the ground, which can create shelter and shade during extreme heat events.
8. Why are bumblebees decreasing sharply in North America and Europe
A. Because the climate is becoming too hot for them to live.
B. Because they are being eaten by honeybees.
C. Because people hunt bumblebees to get honey.
D. Because there are not enough flowers for them to eat.
9. What does the underlined word “ They ” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Honeybees. B. Bumblebees.
C. Flowers. D. Crops.
10. Why are bumblebees regarded as important pollinators
A. They have bigger wings than honeybees.
B. They can shake the leaves of flowers quickly.
C. They can help pollinate some specific crops.
D. Honeybees dislike the pollen of crops like tomatoes and blueberries.
11. What can people do to protect bumblebees in everyday life
A. People can expand the crops to provide food for bumblebees.
B. People can raise bumblebees in their garden freely.
C. People can improve the environment of bumblebees’ habitat.
D. People can use fallen logs or leaf piles to create shelter for bumblebees.

A new COVID-19 variant(变种)named Omicron, has been discovered, prompting(导致)renewed concerns about the viral pandemic. Researchers are racing to understand more about the variant. What do we know about Omicron so far
Identified in south Africa on Nov. 9, 2021, the variant became the dominant strain in the country’s Gauteng province within two weeks. On Nov. 26, 2021, the World Health Organization designated (命名)it the fifth variant of concern (VOC 新冠病毒“关切变异株”)and named it after the Greek letter Omicron.
Countries and regions including South Africa, Israel, Belgium, Italy, the UK, Austria and Hong Kong have reported Omicron cases. No cases had been reported on the Chinese mainland as of Dec. 7, 2021.
How worried should we be about Omicron There is no systematic data on the new strain’s transmissibility(传播性). But it contains key mutations(变异)seen in four other variants of concern - Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta. It also has mutations that help it more easily stick to human cells and multiply, said the National Health Commission.
Also, it is not yet clear whether Omicron infections are severe than other variant, including Delta, according to a Nov. 28, 2021 WHO statement. Wearing masks remains the most effective way to stop the spread of the virus, including the Omicron variant. It is recommended that all people, including the fully vaccinated (接种疫苗) and those receiving a booster shot(加强针),wear masks in public spaces and on public transportation. Regular hand washing and good ventilation (通风)are also important, according to National Health Commission.
Scientists in Hong Kong say they have become the first in Asia to successfully isolate(分离)the Omicron variant from the COVID - 19 samples. They’re now working with drug makers on the Chinese mainland to develop a vaccine for the new variant.
“With science and solidarity, we have dealt with Delta well”, Zhang Wenhong, head of the Center for Infectious Diseases at Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, said, “We can do the same with Omicron”.

A damaging fire nearly destroyed Notre Dame de Paris two years ago. Now scientists are leading the effort to restore the beloved cathedral to its former glory.
Eight restoration scientists put on hard hats and heavy-duty boots, and stepped inside the blackened shell of Notre Dame de Paris, the world’s most famous cathedral. Ten days earlier, a fire had swept through its attic, melted its roof and vault(拱顶).
“What matters isn’t the roof and vault so much as the sanctuary(圣所)they protect,” said Aline Magnien, director of the Historical Monuments Research Laboratory (LRMH). “The heart of Notre Dame had been saved.”
On April 15, 2019, an electrical short was the likely spark for a flame that threatened to burn the 850-year-old cathedral to the ground. Following an agreement developed for just such a disaster, firefighters knew which works of art to rescue and in which order. They knew to keep the water pressure low and to avoid spraying colorful glass windows so the cold water wouldn’t ruin the hot glass.
But even though their efforts avoided the worst, the emergency was far from over. More than 200 tons of poisonous lead from the roof was unaccounted for. And the damage threatened the delicate balance of forces between the vault and the cathedral’s flying buttresses(飞拱): the entire building is on the edge of collapse.
At LRMH, the laboratory tasked with conserving all the nation’s monuments, Magnien and her 22 colleagues apply techniques from geology to metallurgy(冶金术)as they evaluate the condition of Notre Dame’s stone, glass, paint, and metal. They aim to prevent further damage to the cathedral and to guide engineers in the national effort to restore it.

Bees are vital to human survival, but due to climate change, pesticides and habitat destruction, their numbers are in decline.
Bees have been around for over 100 million years, and in that time they could be found in almost every part of the globe. There are over 20,000 species of bee, but thanks to our close relationship with honeybees, most well-known bee facts relate to this hive-dwelling species alone.
In fact, around half of the planet’s bee species are solitary, most don’t make or store honey, and they can look very different to the yellow-and-black bees we’re familiar with. It’s a sad fact that these wonderfully adaptive insects, who’ve survived a whole host of changes since they first appeared on our planet, are now under serious threat. With around one-third of bee species in decline, it’s a critical time for us to do everything we can to support them.
It’s easy to see why the loss of bees would be catastrophic -we couldn’t survive without pollinators(传粉者)but their extinction would have an impact well beyond their role in providing the food we eat. Bees and other pollinators are part of our planet’s delicately balanced ecosystem. If a bee species dies out, the plants and trees that depend on it are affected too; in turn the creatures who feed or live on those plants are affected and so on up the food chain.
While it may seem that we can’t do much as individuals to tackle some of these bigger issues, we can certainly work together with others to raise awareness about them and bring about change. Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and other charities are working hard to raise awareness of the problems bees are facing. Supporting these groups is one way of helping bees through fundraising, membership and signing petitions(请愿书), or simply following them on social media and sharing campaign details.
28. The following are the reasons why the number of bees is decreasing except_________
A. the change of the climate B. the close relationship with people
C. the use of pesticides D. the loss of their living places
29. What does the author think of the loss of bees
A. Horrible B. Normal C. Avoidable D. Predictable
30. The underlined word”tackle” in paragraph 5 probably means__________.
A. prevent B. discover C. handle D. capture
31. What is the author’s aim in writing the text
A. To make people know the importance of bees.
B. To inform people of the issues bees are facing.
C. To draw people’s attention of the declining of bees.
D. To call on people to help save the bees.
D
Blind people have long desired for brightness, but scientists don’t have the technology. To bring that one step closer to reality, Zhiyong Fan, a materials scientist of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, developed a new artificial eye recently. The device, which is about as sensitive to light and has sharper vision and a faster reaction time than a real eyeball, may outperform human eyes.
The human eye owes its wide field of view and clear eyesight to the retina (视网膜) — an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. The design for a new artificial eye is based on the structure of the human eye and uses a friendly light-sensitive material. At the back of the eyeball, an artificial retina is lined with nanoscale light sensors (纳米级光感器). Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens (晶状体) at the front of the eye. Wires attached to the back of the retina send signals from those sensors to the processor, similar to the way nerve networks connect the eyeball to the brain.
“In the future, we can use this to replace damaged human eyes,” says the lead designer. In theory, this artificial eye could see more clearly than the human eye, because the artificial retina contains about 460 million light sensors per square centimeter while a real retina has about 10 million light-detecting cells per square centimeter. Besides, the artificial eyeball records changes in lighting faster than human eyes can — within about 30 to 40 milliseconds, rather than 40 to 150 milliseconds. Although its 100-degree field of view isn’t as broad as the 150 degrees a human eye can take in, the device can see as well as the human eye in poor light.
Hongrui Jiang, an electrical engineer at the University of Wisconsin, though, thinks engineers need a much more practical and efficient way to produce vast series of tiny wires on the back of the artificial eyeball to give it superhuman sight, which is super hard to achieve.
32. Why does Zhiyong Fan develop the artificial eye
A. To replace people’s real eyeballs. B. To help the blind regain their eyesight.
C. To gain a sharper vision. D. To help normal eyes perform better.
33. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The material used for the artificial eye. B. The structure of the human eye.
C. The advantages of the artificial eye. D. The design of the artificial eye.
34. Which of the following is TRUE about the artificial eye and the human eye
A. They have the same structure.
B. The human eye sees better in weak light.
C. The artificial eye may see more clearly.
D. The artificial eye takes in a broader view.
35.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Science B. Health. C. Education. D. Entertainment.

In one of my favorite studies on the meaning of life, researchers asked a group of students to write about their “true self”.Another group of students were asked to write about their “everyday self” and a third group of students were asked to write about the campus bookstore. After the writing task, the students were then asked to rate their meaning of life.
The researchers were interested in how much detail the participants provided in their various essays.Their assumption (设想) is that the more detailed description one provides about one's true self, the more likely one authentically (真实地) connects with that sense of self. Not surprisingly, for those writing about their everyday selves or about the campus bookstore, the amount of detail didn't have any connection with their sense of meaning of life. However, when people wrote about their true selves, the more detailed the essay was, the more the person was exposed to the meaning of life.
To live a meaningful life, then, make sure you are in touch with yourself. If you don't follow your own values and dreams, you are most probably following values set by others. And there is nothing more disappointing in life than living someone else's dream. As some wise cracker has put it, it is better to be yourself, as everyone else is already taken.
Meaningfulness is about connection. While this means that a major part of the meaningfulness in our lives comes from connecting with others through intimate, caring relationships and through being able to contribute to society and those one cares about, you cannot connect with others unless you are first in touch with yourself.Otherwise it is not you who are connecting to others but just an empty shell.Only by knowing what you are, can you start to authentically connect with others.
So, set out to write about your true self and who you believe you really are as a person, what are your most important values, and what you yourself would like to pursue and have in life. Then figure out how you could make that “true self” more the self that is realized in your everyday life and work.

A.The process of a study. B.The meaning of life.
C.Three groups of students. D.A writing task of evaluating life.

B.More various essays interpret life meaning better.
C.The participants with detailed essays have a more meaningful life.

34.What can make you truly connect with others

D.Being able to contribute to society.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text

The goal of writing a resume is to show employers you are well fit for the job. Adding information like your skills can help convey why the employer should advance you in the hiring process. Another section you might consider is to add voluntary work.
Reasons for listing voluntary work ★To provide information on changeable skills when shifting careers or industries★To give background when there are gaps in your resume due to leaving the workforce for an extended period of time★To add to a resume with limited professional experience (important to recent college or high school graduates)
How to list voluntary work on your resume ★If you have professional experience, you should include only three to five most recent and relevant jobs. If not, consider adding volunteer positions to your professional background section. List relevant volunteer experiences under your professional history section.★If you gained or improved important skills through voluntary work, include these skills and developments in the voluntary work description. Pay attention to any skills that may also be important to your potential employers.★If you have volunteer experiences that are unrelated to your industry, you might consider including a brief voluntary work section at the bottom of your resume if you feel it will set you apart from other candidates. You can format this section the same as your professional work experience section or write a shortened version that takes up less space.

When I was in eighth grade, my English teacher Joan announced that we were going to learn about prepositional phrases. “There are over forty commonly used prepositions,” she continued. “And everyone must memorize them.” Joan recited (背诵) these prepositions as easily as saying the days of the week. She said you would find grammar easy when you memorized them. I tried my best and finally succeeded. Then, grammar became easier, just as Joan had promised.
In addition to singing the prepositions, she shared other useful language points. I still remembered her catchy phrase: “Good better best, never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better is best.”
After high school, I went to college, majoring (主修) in—my parents couldn’t believe it—English! In a creative writing class in my junior year, I recited the prepositions for my professor and classmates. I explained how my eighth grade teacher, Joan, had often said that a strategically placed prepositional phrase could add depth and variety to sentences. Impressed, my professor asked for a copy of Joan’s list and other tricks of the trade that I remembered.
After graduating from college, I landed a job teaching eighth grade English. I tried best the way Joan had to make grammar easy. I started the unit with prepositions coming first. Memorization was the important part. Before long, the students were singing the prepositions to their favorite tunes. One year, since it was near Christmas, we all sang the prepositions to “Jingle Bells”.
I also required students to recite the prepositions in ten seconds or less. If you thought that was impossible, then you didn’t know eighth graders. They welcomed any trouble, and with no homework as a motivator, they got right down to business. I pulled out a stopwatch and timed the students daily to judge their progress; 21, 16, 12, then bingo, 10 seconds!
I taught eighth grade English for thirty-eight years. Looking back, teaching English was a tough but worthwhile job, and I loved it every day.

For years, life went something like this: We’d grow up in one place, head off to college, and then find a city to get a job and live there for a few years. The final goal was to find somewhere to settle down, buy a house, start a family, and begin the whole cycle all over again. But now some people are increasingly choosing to move from city to city throughout their entire lives, sometimes as frequently as every month.
Just ask Alex, who has had a front-row seat watching this evolution unfold. Six years ago, he launched a startup called Blueground that rents out beautifully designed, fully furnished apartments for a month at a time, at rates that are cheaper than hotels. And it aims to make each one feel unique and comfortable, rather than standardized, like what you might find in a traditional hotel.
Today, the company has 3,000 properties(房地产) in six U.S. cities, along with Dubai, Istanbul, London, Paris, and Alex’s native Athens, and a staff of 400. With the help of the Series B round of funding, the company landed $ 50 million, plus its previous total of $ 28 million, to continue its rapid expansion. It hopes to have 50,000 properties in 50 cities over the next three years.
Alex first came up with the idea for Blueground while he was working as a management consultant for McKinsey. “The accommodation of choice for consultants is the hotel,” he says. “I had to spend five years in hotel rooms, living in 12 different cities. I loved seeing the world, but I didn’t love feeling like I didn’t have a home.” And what’s more, hotels aren’t a particularly cost-effective solution for companies either. In Alex’s case, McKinsey sometimes paid $ 10,000 or more for him to stay in a major city for a month.

In Colombia a group, named WebConserva, is carrying out a project in the San Lucas Mountains with the help of coffee growers.
The San Lucas area is one of the most unexplored places in Colombia, which is home to many thousands of species of animals and plants. Yet gold mining and coca farming have dealt a blow to its ecosystem. To limit additional development in the San Lucas area, the group helps coffee growers by linking them with processors from around the country.
Colombia has more different kinds of living things than any other country except neighboring Brazil. In 2016, the Colombian government signed a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia ending years of civil war. As a result, more land became accessible for use, with deforestation(毁林) coming along. Government information shows that in 2017, almost 220,000 hectares of forest were destroyed compared to around 124,000 hectares in 2015.
To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants, which costs about $ 77,000 dollars a year. WebConserva hopes that, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. In San Lucas, the families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals from the forests. In return, they receive $ 250 to $ 300 per 125 kilograms of coffee, an enviable amount there. Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His new coffee plantation(种植园) makes a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals like the jaguar live and hunt. In this way, he doesn't have to kill wild animals to protect his cattle.
Barajas said that pulling down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against his will. Now he feels that growing coffee lets him be a steward of the land. "I'm taking care of the environment, the forest and the animals," he said.
12. Why does WebConserva establish the project
A. To expand regions of coffee growing.
B. To assist local farmers to earn money.
C. To link processors with coffee growers.
D. To preserve the biodiversity in the San Lucas Mountains.
13. What happened after Colombia’s civil war was over
A. Colombia helped many needy families.
B. Colombia lost lots of areas of forests.
C. Colombia started to save damaged forests.
D. Colombia became more peaceful than Brazil.
14. Which is probably a function of Barajas's coffee plantation
A. A method of protecting cattle and wildlife.
B. A substitute for hunting of wild animals.
C. A barrier between man and wild animals.
D. A shelter for cattle against human hunters.
15. What does the underlined word "steward" mean in the last paragraph
