Grandparents are sources of extra dollars, hearty hugs. There’s a long history of literary grandparents—passing down wisdom, sharing adventures, being eaten by wolves. Here are a few of our very favorite grandparents from some of our very favorite kids’ books.
Hipple Grandmother (from My Hipple Grandmother by Reeve Lindbergh)
This grandma is a wonderful reminder that not all grandparents grew up during the Great Depression. Grandparents come from a wide variety of backgrounds and time periods, so it’s fun to celebrate a grandmother who “hasn’t cut her hair at all since 1969.”
Uncle Alp (of Heidi by Johanna Spyri)
This children’s classic, originally published in 1881, actually has a surprisingly progressive attitude towards grandparents.
Throughout Spyri’s text, grandparents act as caregivers, and the transformation of Heidi’s grandpa, Uncle Alp, from a bad-tempered hermit (隐士) to a loving parent figure is the emotional core of the book.
Grannie (of Red Riding Hood retold by James Marshall)
Red Riding’s poor Grannie might be the most famous grandparent. Red was able to see past the wolf’s trick, but her grandmother’s fate depends on what version of the tale you read. If you prefer your grandmothers undigested, you’ll love this classic tale told by James Marshall.
Nana (of Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Pe a)
Young CJ and his Nana are waiting for the bus after church one Sunday, and CJ starts wondering why they have to take the bus, why he doesn’t have as many toys as other kids, and why they live in a “dirty” part of town. His Nana addresses each question with patience and grace, helping her grandson understand inequality with the kind of insights.

Asking a teenager to get off their phone for jut an hour during dinner time is sometimes a big ask. So imagine asking them to stay off social media for six year.
This is exactly what mum Lorna asked her son Sivert to do when be turned 12 in an attempt to guide him to clear of the social media addiction
Mum-of-two Lorna called it the ‘18 for 18 challenge’, offering Sivert $2,500 to stay off all social media sites until his eighteenth birthday—a task he successfully completed.
Lorna explained that the idea for the challenge came from a similar story she heard on the radio about a mum who did the same with her child until they turned 16. It was also fueled by the fear that her son would fall into the same social media trap that her daughter found herself in.
Sivert’s older sister had her phone taken away from her in an attempt to get her away from the sites, something she was at first very angry about. “It was not even three weeks later that she thanked us and said she was so happy to not have her phone,” mum Lorna recalled. So to avoid having the same issue with her son, she set him the challenge enticing (诱导) him with money.
While he says it was hard to stay off platforms like TikTok and Instagram with his friends always talking about the hot topics and viral videos, Sivert said that it meant that he had more time to focus on his schooling and sport. As a basketball and football player he says he treated the challenge like one of his games and stuck to his focus of winning at the end.
Now that Sivert is of the age to make a mature choice about social media, he has decided to create an Instagram account. The teen is, however, keeping his account private has asked followers to be patient with him while he “figures it out.”

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War Ⅰ. German, British, and French soldiers already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and fraternized (打得火热) with “the enemy” along two-thirds of the Western Front. German troops held Christmas trees up out of the trenches (战壕) with signs, “Merry Christmas.”
“You no shoot, we no shoot.” Thousands of troops streamed across a no-man’s land filled with dead bodies. They sang Christmas carols, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared rations, played football, and even roasted some pigs. Soldiers embraced (拥抱) men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if the Generals (将军) forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.
It shocked the high command on either side. Here was disaster in the making: soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals on both sides declared this peacemaking to be wrong. Fifteen million would be killed.
Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce. On Christmas Day, 1988, a story in the Boston Globe mentioned that a local FM radio host played “Christmas in the Trenches” several times and was surprised by the effect. The song became the most requested recording during the holidays in Boston on several FM stations. “Some callers even telephone the host deeply moved, sometimes in tears, asking, ‘What the hell did I just hear ’”
You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It gives us a glimpse of the world as we wish it could be and says, “This really happened once.” It reminds us of those thoughts we keep hidden away, ou of range of the TV and newspaper stories that tell us how trivial (微不足道的) and mean human life is. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true: the world really could be different.

C. They valued the life in peace. D. They desired to protect their motherland.
11. What do the TV and newspaper stories probably convey
A. Being against wars. B. Cherishing today’s happiness.

D
The Brazilian scientists were in disbelief after seeing the results. They tested different models to re-check their information. But all returned the same. The country with the most freshwater resources in the world had lost 15 percent of its surface water since 1991.
Evaporation (蒸发) is a part of the natural process that can lessen water resources. This is especially true in areas with low water levels like the Pantanal wetlands. But the scientists believe something else is happening.
Experts have warmed human activity is affecting the world’s weather patterns. It is causing extreme events to happen more often, such as severe droughts and floods. The cutting and burning of forest and the building of large hydroelectric factories and dams for watering crops all affect natural patterns.
In Brazil’s Amazon rainforest, water evaporates then travels on air flows to provide rainfall far away. But some climate experts say if too much forest is destroyed, the Amazon will start an irreparable process of becoming a savannah (大草原).
There are more immediate effects for worry, like possible power shortages this year. Hydroelectric reservoirs have had ten years of lower-than-usual rainfall. Reservoirs in the Parana River area have never before been overused.
The Parana River and its connected water bodies supply fresh water to some 40 million people. That includes the large city of Sao Paolo and several states. Fishing communities and farmers also depend on these water bodies.
Brazil’s decreasing water resources may also worsen fires that people set each winter to clear land. The fires then bum out of control. Last year, more than 25 percent of Brazil’s Pantanal was on fire. It was the worst yearly damage since officials began keeping records in 2003. In areas without roads, moving on smaller rivers can be a problem because of low water levels, Rabelo said. That means firefighters could soon have trouble reaching some fires. And, even if they can, less water is available to put them out.
12. What was the Brazilian scientists’ reaction to their findings
A. Satisfied. B. Disappointed. C. Shocked. D. Overjoyed.
13. Which of the following belongs to “something else” in the third paragraph

15. What is the best title of the passage
A. Water Study Raises Fears for Drought B. Brazil’s Forest Is Disappearing
C. More Water, More Happiness D. Cherish Water, Extend Life

When I was younger, I always knew my parents had trouble with money. We would go to yard sales all the time, buy everyday supplies and work at and eat at a soup kitchen 4 nights a week.
One day, a new man walked into the soup kitchen and asked me what my name was. As I told him my name was Angela, my mom handed me the soup ladle and hair net to start work. After that, I couldn’t find the strange man again. I searched everywhere and even asked others in the kitchen if they had seen him. My mom thought I was going crazy, saying there was no one with me when she came to me. She said I had been sitting alone and that it seemed I was talking to myself. Later that night, my mom was crying. I asked her why and she told me the rent on our apartment had gone up and that my grandma had died. She didn’t know how she was going to pay for the funeral and the rent. I promised her I would help pick up small items after she made as much money as possible.
Once we got into the apartment building, she asked me to grab the mail in the mail room. I went and only found one single envelope. A familiar man called me back saying I probably left something in our mailbox. I reached in and pulled out a huge manila envelope that looked bulky, but I couldn’t tell what was in it. I brought the envelopes up to my mom. She opened the first one and found our first super expensive rent bill. She then walked into her room, saying she couldn’t handle to open the other one. I looked at the second envelope and saw this:
“Dear Angela and Family. Love, Your Friend.” My mom ripped the envelope open, tears streaming down her face. She emptied the contents onto the bed. I brought a hand to my face, wiping away multiple tears. There on the bed were countless checks, all addressed to my mom.
I had a feeling that I knew who had sent it, but didn’t want to tell my mom—my friend from the soup kitchen.

A new study focuses on K2-18b, an exoplanet(系外行星) discovered in 2018, which orbits a red dwarf star close enough to receive about the same amount of radiation from its star as Earth does from our sun.
Recently, scientists have discovered gas giants that have water in their atmospheres, but this is the least giant planet ever to have water detected in its atmosphere. “The water detection was quite clear to us relatively early on,” lead author Bjorn Benneke, a professor at the Institute for Research on Exoplanets at the Universite de Montreal, told in an interview.
“Studies have suggested that planets with hydrogen-rich atmospheres could host certain forms of life.” Benneke said. However, “K2-18b’s large atmosphere is extremely thick and creates high-pressure conditions, which likely prevents life as we know it from existing on the planet’s surface.” a news release reads. While these researchers found evidence for liquid water clouds on K2-18b, because of its lack of surface, rain wouldn’t pool on the planet. Without a real surface, so to speak, landing on the planet would also be nearly impossible to land on, especially because the gas is so thick and has such an incredibly high pressure that any Earth-created spacecraft sent there would be destroyed.
Benneke suggests that, possibly, this planet formed by rock absorbing large amounts of gas, “like a vacuum cleaner,” he said. The gas absorbed would have more than doubled the planet and increased its volume Warren eightfood.
To come to these conclusions, the research team analyzed data from Hubble Space Telescope observations that they made between 2019 and 2020 of the K2-18b planet passing in front of its star eight times. This type of research, Benneke said, is leading toward a final goal of “being able to study real, true earth-like planets.” We are not quite there yet, he said, but this is really exciting.”
8. Why is it impossible to land on the K2-18b
A. It has thin gas. B. It doesn’t have a real surface.
C. It has too much water. D. It is too far from the earth.
9. How does K2-18b expand according to Benneke
A. By releasing gas itself. B. By receiving radiation from the sun.
C. By taking in much gas by rocks. D. By getting away from the red dwarf star.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Scientists are making progress in studying real earth-like planets.
B. It is impossible for humans to land on other earth-like planets.
C. Scientists have succeeded in exploring K2-18b completely.
D. The K2-18b planet has passed before its star eight times between 2019 and 2020.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The exploration of the outer space.
B. The study of solar systems’ environment.
C. The discovery of the K2-18b planet.
D. The research on the K2-18b planet.

The skies over Latin America’s largest city are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian airline Gol reached an agreement that could see it transport regular passengers around S o Paulo in hundreds of low-cost zero-emission electric air taxis.
Dómhnal Slattery, chief executive of the Dublin-based firm Avolon, which will provide the aircraft to Gol and recently placed an order for 500 of the aircraft from their British manufacturer, admitted helicopters were the “kingdom of the wealthiest”.
But the Avolon boss claimed the introduction of VA-X4 eVTOLs (electric vertical(垂直的) takeoff and landing) aircraft to S o Paulo would be a gamechanger for regular passengers once the taxis, which look like a futuristic cross between a helicopter and a glider, were delivered in late 2024 or 2025.
“Our basic estimate (估计) at the moment is that the operating cost here for this aircraft will be equal to $1 per passenger over a 25-mile trip,” Slattery told the Financial Times. “Which is almost equal to an Uber ride.”
Few cities are crying out for such a revolution more than S o Paulo, a sprawling metropolis with more than 12 million citizens and choked by a fleet of 8.6m vehicles.
In the late 1990s, the congestion (拥塞) became so bad in what is now the world’s fifth biggest city after Tokyo, Delhi, Seoul and Shanghai that authorities were forced to introduce a number plate rotation (循环) system for vehicles.
Stephen Fitzpatrick, the head of the British aerospace manufacturer that produces the aircraft, Vertical Aerospace, said the flying taxis would be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city and will “transform how we travel around high population density cities that are crowded with traffic”.
The Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace was founded in 2016 and promises to pioneer “a new era in vertical transport”.
“We’ll be looking to Asia after S o Paulo,” Avolon’s chief commercial officer, Paul Geaney, told Reuters.
12. What did Dómhnal Slattery think of helicopters
A. They could be afforded by all.
B. They could be mostly used by the rich.
C. They provided convenience for travellers.
D. They showed the owners’ social status.
13. What is the advantage of electric air taxis
A. Eco-friendliness. B. Traditional design.
C. Zero noise. D. Free delivery.
14. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage
A. The flying taxis will be ideal for Brazil’s biggest city.
B. More cities are eager for electric air taxis than S o Paulo.
C The Avolon will enter the Asian transportation market soon.
D. Travelling by VA-X4 eVTOLs can be more convenient but more expensive than by Uber.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Uber Ride—a futuristic aerospace revolution
B. Advanced vertical aircrafts ordered by the Avolon Company
C. VA-X4 eVTOLs—a lifesaver for high population density cities
D. Electric air taxis to make their first appearance in Brazil’s most congested city

Having worked in the space station core module Tianhe for three months-the longest-ever human space mission in the Chinese history, three “taikonauts” of the Shenzhou-12 crew returned to Earth on Friday, hitting a new milestone in China's space exploration.
China's first self-developed space station, Tiangong, is independently constructed and operated by the country, demonstrating the country's breakthroughs in technologies concerning the astronauts' long-term stay and health care, recycling and life support system, supply of space materials and operations, as well as in-orbit maintenance.
As scheduled, the Tianzhou-3 cargo craft and the Shenzhou-13 manned spaceship will also be launched later this year to dock with the Tianhe module, and another trio of astronauts will stay in orbit for six months. For 2022, China is considering over a blitz of space missions, including the launch of the Wentian and Mengtian lab modules, two cargo spacecraft and two crewed spaceships, for the building of Tiangong, which is planned to be completed next year.

The herd of 14 wild Asian elephants wandering around in southwestern China's Yunnan province successfully went through the last natural barrier on its way home and returned to its traditional habitat in Pu' er city on Friday.
At 1 am, the elephants, which had left their habitat in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, crossed the Babian River and entered Ning'er county in Pu' er city, one of the three major habitats of Asian elephants in Yunnan. The northbound trip, lasting about 18 months, finally ended without any harm to either the elephants or local residents. The herd departed from its traditional habitat in Xishuangbanna Dai autonomous district last year and started traveling north in April. It passed through eight counties in the province during the journey. In June, it eventually reached the suburbs of Kunming, the provincial capital.
The herd started its journey with 16 members, but three of them dropped out, while two calves were born on the journey. In June, a bull elephant broke away from the group and wandered off on his own. In July, the bull elephant was lifted into a cage on the back of a truck and returned to Xishuangbanna.
The Asian elephant is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The animal, which can be found in the areas of Yunnan bordering Myanmar and Laos, is also under first-class State protection in China. Shen Qingzhong, a senior engineer from the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, said it's inevitable(难免的)that the elephants will make another journey in the future as migration is a normal activity for elephants. “Historically, Asian elephants used to live in many parts of the country. Migration is in their nature. It helps the species expand its territory and have more chances to improve its gene pool by mating with different groups,” he said.
The forestry department and the provincial government plan to develop a national park, which aims to provide habitat protection for the elephants and a balanced relationship with residents.
32. Which of the following is True

C. 15. D. 16.
34. What can we infer from the engineer's words
A. Elephants can benefit from migration.
B. Migration is an abnormal activity for elephants.
C. Elephants have less chances to improve their gene.
D. Elephants used to live in its territory.
35. What does the article mainly talk about
A. Elephants in Yunnan. B. How to protect the elephants.

One night many years ago when I was on the bridge of a ship that passed one of our large cities on a quiet night, I saw its lights reflected in the sky and heard the rumblings of the city's noises. As I looked to my other side, I could see nothing but open space of darkness and endless water. I realized how small I was and that my own problems of life did not seem great.
I have spent twenty-five years on boats. Now I am a docking pilot. My job is to bring in the large luxury liners and stay with them until they are safely anchored in their berths. Sometimes this requires two tugs(拖船),sometimes many more, depending on the tide, the weather, and the draft of the vessel.
Most of you no doubt have seen these tugs pushing and pulling at the big liners. What they are doing doesn't seem to make much sense at first, but presently the big boat is alongside her landing stage, her ropes made fast, and the job is done.
These tugs, whether one or ten, move about in accord with whistle signals I send them from the bridge of the big liner. These signals make up a language that is just as dependable as the spoken word; or even more so, because our docking signals are rarely misunderstood. The captain of each tug does his work according to the signals he receives. He never asks questions. He takes everything on faith, and it always works out.
I felt very important the first time I ever docked a big liner, thinking that I was in control of a great ship worth millions of dollars and the owners were depending on me to bring her safely to her berth. After I had docked several of the large liners, I realized I was not important, but simply the quarterback who called the signals.
Working around tugboats has had its effect on what I believe. The great transatlantic liners depend on the help of the little tugs to bring them safely to port, and it is with one's success.

On Nov 26,lawmakers in Beijing passed the city's modified family planning and population regulations. One of the highlights was that maternity leave(产假)would be extended by 30 days.
Tang Xiaoyu, who has a 5-month-old baby, said she had the feeling of winning the lottery. The 32-year-old works in the human resources department of an Internet company in Beijing. Previously, new mothers like her were usually entitled to 128 days of paid maternity leave.
Moreover, new mothers can now take additional maternity leave of one to three months if their employer agrees, and both mother and father can have five days of child care leave every year until their child reaches the age of 3.
Beijing is one of about 20 provincial-level entities that have decided to extend maternity leave or add parental leave to their newly modified family planning regulations.
After the adoption of the third -child policy in August, the extra measures were rolled out as part of moves to ease the burden of having a newborn and also to encourage families to have more children.
Mu Guangzong, a professor at Peking University's Institute of Population Research, said that the extension of maternity leave in several regions is a significant move toward building a “fertility (生育)friendly" society. “However, it may have negative aspects,”he told Legal Daily.
Song Tianjiao, who is looking for a job in Beijing, said she was asked about her status of marriage and childbearing plans at several job interviews. In one extreme case, she was asked to guarantee that she would not get pregnant for two years after starting the job.
“In such an environment, will the extension of maternity leave make it harder for women to find a job " she said.
Chen Xia, a researcher with the Institute of Philosophy at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said that such concerns are reasonable, and the current dilemma is that the costs of favorable fertility policies are shouldered almost totally by employers.
28. In the second paragraph, Tang Xiaoyu had “the feeling of winning the lottery" ,because .

30. What can be inferred from what Song Tianjiao said
A. Lengthened leave will likely impose heavier costs on family.
B. The new policies may deepen gender discrimination in the workplace.
C. A woman's childbearing plans will be asked about at the job interviews.

The new TV series Joy of Life is a hit, scoring 8/10 among the most critical reviewers of Douban,a Chinese social networking service website. The series premiered(首映)on Tencent Video and iQiyi(online video platforms)on November 26,2019.
But how would you feel if Tencent Video and iQiyi allowed anyone to pay an extra fee to see a show's upcoming episodes(集)ahead of schedule The two of China's biggest video streaming platforms decided to allow users to pay an extra fee on top of their subscription(订阅)to get advanced access to episodes of Qing Yu Nian(Joy of Life). Monthly subscriptions for Tencent Video cost 15 yuan(US$ 2.14)and iQiyi charges 19 yuan(US$ 2.71). Under the new policy, users could pay 50 yuan(US$ 7.14)to always stay six episodes ahead in Qing Yu Nian. Alternatively, watching a single episode in advance costs 3 yuan(US$ 0.43).
Users are mad about Tencent Video's and iQiyi's extra fees on top of subscriptions. On Weibo,a Chinese microblogging website, tags related to the two platforms' pricing policies repeatedly recurred on trending searches, where many people were found complaining about the platforms being greedy and called for the audience to boycott the policy.
The policy also drew criticism from People's Daily. The state-owned newspaper said the platforms “ have bad table manners” and “drain the pond to fish and burn the woods to hunt,” which are Chinese idioms used to describe someone focusing on quick profits as opposed to long-term interests. People's Daily also said the sites look down upon on users' rights. ” Two lawyers apparently agreed. The lawyers, who claim to be users of Tencent Video and iQiyi, started two separate cases, saying that they violated users' rights.
But some experts don't think the new pricing rules are unreasonable. Zhu Wei,a professor at the China University of Political Science and Law,argued in an article that charging outside subscriptions are value-added services and don't violate the law. But Zhu added that the platforms are at fault for not properly informing users about the policy in advance.
In the face of extreme competition and perhaps an ambitious business model,China's streaming giants are hoping that additional charges could turn their luck around. But judging by the pushback on social media,it may not be so easy. It's hoped that the next stage of this streaming war is a little more friendly.
24. According to the new policy, how much will the subscribers pay in total if they want to watch six episodes on Tencent Video in advance
A. 50 yuan B. 18 yuan C. 65 yuan D. 69 yuan
25. What is the author's attitude towards the new policy

Have you ever noticed that some people can eat what they want and stay in shape, while others carefully watch what they eat and still put on weight How frustrating! However, scientists are beginning to believe that some people get the ability to stay thin from their parents.
Scientists say that when some people eat, their bodies will naturally store the excess energy from food as fat. These people gain weight if they eat more than they need each day. Meanwhile, other people eat more than they need but their bodies are able to “burn off ” the extra food without making fat,so they rarely have weight problems.
To show that this is true, scientists have experimented on laboratory mice. They gave the mice a special diet with a lot of fat. Some mice gained weight while the other mice stayed thin, even though both groups of mice ate the same amount of food and got the same amount of exercise. Scientists concluded that weight gain seemed to be influenced by genetic factors. They also believe they have now identified the genes that may cause this tendency. These genes, according to the scientists, get passed down the generations. Armed with this knowledge, they believe it may be possible to develop medicines that can target the genes and stop people from gaining weight.
The study of weight gain is becoming more important as the number of people who are overweight continues to grow. In the United States, over seventy percent of the population have weight problems. This means they are at risk of illness such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
Current medicines for weight control do not work very well because they can have serious side effects, such as heart problems. However,it takes a long time to develop and thoroughly test new drugs. Therefore, despite this breakthrough in the study of weight-loss drugs, scientists and health professionals all agree that currently the best way to control weight gain is to have a healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle with daily exercise. This will not only help people avoid becoming overweight, but also help them stay healthy and energetic.
28. According to the scientists, why do some people gain weight easily
A. Because their genes cause the tendency.
B. Because their bodies do not make fat
C. Because their bodies store energy from food as fat.
D. Because they eat more than they need each day.
29. What do we know about the experiment
A. They did the experiment to find the gene that stop people from gaining weight.
B. They did the experiment to find the reason why people gain weight.
C. They did the experiment to show the importance of healthy food.
D. They did the experiment to show the importance of regular exercise.
30. What may lead to high blood pressure according to the study
A. The balanced diet B. The weight problems
C. The lack of exercise D. The lack of drugs
31. What is the purpose of the last paragraph of the text
A. To inform us of serious side effects of the weight-loss drugs.
B. To introduce a breakthrough of the weight-loss drugs.
C. To advise us to develop a healthy lifestyle.
D. To encourage us to develop and test new drugs.

In February of 1942,Mexican farmer Dionisio Pulido thought he heard thunder coming from his cornfield. However, the sound wasn't coming from the sky. The source was a large smoking break sending out gas and pushing out rocks. This opening would come to be known as the volcano Paricutin, and over the next 9 years, its lava and ash would cover over 200 square km. But where did this new volcano come from, and what caused its unpredictable eruption
One of the most common causes of an eruption is an increase in magmastatic(静磁)pressure. Magma(岩浆)contains various elements and compounds. At high enough concentrations, compounds like water or sulfur(硫)form high-pressure gas bubbles. When these balls of gas reach the surface, they can burst with the force of a gunshot. And when millions of bubbles explode, the energy can send ash into the air. But before they pop or burst, they act like bubbles of CO2 in a shaken soda.
Not all eruptions are due to rising magmastatic pressure- sometimes the weight of the rock above can become dangerously low. Landslides can remove massive quantities of rock from atop a magma chamber or room, dropping the pressure and instantly touching off an eruption. This process is known as “unloading” and it's been responsible for numerous eruptions, including the sudden explosion of Mount St. Helens in 1980. But unloading can also happen over longer periods of time due heating ice or melting glaciers. In fact, many geologists are worried that glacial melt caused by climate change could increase volcanic activity.
Unfortunately, knowing what causes eruptions doesn't make them easy to predict. While scientists can roughly determine the strength and weight of the Earth's crust(地壳),the depth and heat of magma chambers makes measuring changes in magmastatic pressure very difficult. But volcanologists are constantly exploring new technology to overcome this rocky field. Advances in thermal imaging(热成像)have allowed scientists to detect underground hotspots. Spectrometers can analyze gases escaping mag ma. Hopefully, these tools will help us better understand these gas breaks and their explosive eruptions
32. Why does the author mention the story of a farmer in the first paragraph
A. To show the power of volcano eruption.
B. To introduce the topic.
D. To explain the reason.
C. To introduce the volcano Paricutin.
33. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. The bubbles of CO2. B. The ash of the volcano.
C. Gas bubbles of compounds. D. The elements of a soda.
34. Which of the following is true about the eruption of Mount St. Helens
A. Landslides should be responsible for its eruption.
B. It began to explode over a long period of time.
C. The process of "unloading" occurred after its explosion.
D. The weight of the rock above it increased as to cause its eruption.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Scientists can determine the eruption of volcano in advance.
B. It is quite difficult to measure the weight of the Earth's crust.
C. Spectrometers can help scientists to detect underground hotspots.
D. Scientists are positive about further study of volcano eruption.
