When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock ” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o’clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.

第二节(满分25分)
47. “Be sure to hang the decorations high,” said Polly, my stepmom. “Jake might mistake the colorful glass balls for his toys and try to bite them,” Jake was new to our family that Christmas. He was a beautiful brown-and-white dog. And, of course, he was loaded with the curiosity that made everything a toy.
Two weeks before Christmas, we brought out the boxes of decorations, many of which had been in Polly’s family for ages. Among them was a special box that held an entire gingerbread family (姜饼人). They were real cookies, hung with red ribbons (丝带) and made many years earlier.
Every now and then, I or one of my little sisters—Ruth and Sue—would pretend we were going to eat one, knowing that Polly would say, “You’ll break a tooth! They’re so old that they’re rock-hard.” We didn’t really want to eat them, but we enjoyed making fun of Polly.
Since we didn’t know how Jake would react to the decorations or the Christmas tree, we were careful to put the decorations up high. Jake sniffed (嗅) the tree a lot. Those first couple of days, Polly caught him starting to lift a leg on the tree twice. But he learned quickly and settled for sniffing from a distance.
The weekend before Christmas, Dad and Polly took us to watch the new holiday movie. Excited, we jumped into the car with bags of home-made popcorn, and off we went for a great evening.
A few hours later, we returned home, only to find...a terrible mess. It wasn’t the Christmas tree. In fact, we weren’t sure what it was. We stood just inside the door staring at the mess. As it turned out, it was Jake’s bed, which he’d destroyed. Left alone for the first time, he must have gotten bored, attacked it and left it for dead. We didn’t know that the bed was not the only victim.

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was eight o'clock on a May morning, and Micah, my 17-year-old daughter, was in our bonus room upstairs. It had been her temporary eleventh-grade classroom ever since schools had moved to remote learning due to the pandemic (疫情).
From the kitchen, I listened for the sound of her tapping on her laptop. I resisted the urge to check on her. Way too often, Micah was texting friends and commenting on their posts about the fun they were having together. We'd barely left the house for 10 weeks straight.
"Mom, everyone is hanging out today!" Micah's voice came from upstairs. "Why can't I "
I went up the stairs. Micah was lying on the floor wearing pajamas(睡衣), her laptop, school iPad and cell phone in front of her. "It's not fair," she said. I have no one I can be with. I can't wait until I'm 18 and can do what I want."
We'd had this conversation before. Still, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. I was sick of having to stay at home too. Even though Micah and I were home together more than we had been in years, we might as well have been living in separate worlds. "Wanna watch TV later " I asked. "No, thanks." Micah shook her head.
"In a few weeks you'll be going to sports camp,'' I added "That's something you can look forward to." I closed the door. I was used to Micah's rejection, but it still hurt. Teenage independence is heathy, but I worried if I didn't find a way to bond with my girl soon, I might never be close with her again. She'd be 18 in the fall and had already convinced herself she didn't need me anymore. Maybe she was right. No matter what I did, I couldn't seem to reach her.

The Nunes’s family lived in a friendly community near the woods. It was a normal Wednesday afternoon Mom Araceli Nunes returned home from selling food and drinks along the roadside in Plantersville, Texas. Her business had been fairly profitable and she was happy to see her husband preparing dinner in the kitchen and her 3-year-old son, Christopher Ramirez, playing in the yard. However, when she turned to unload her car, she didn’t notice the kid followed a neighbor’s dog into the woods.
When they couldn’t find Christopher, the panicky family called for help, and within a few hours, 48 different agencies arrived to comb through the area around their home. Their entire community started to help find Christopher. Some walked into the forest and others drove farther away.
After days with no sign of the kid, rescuers feared the worst, but Araceli never stopped hoping for her son’s safe return. At long last, after four long days and nights, the sheriff received a phone call from a man named Tim Halfin.
Tim Halfin’s house was about three miles away. He had heard of the missing boy when he returned home from a business trip. He didn't think a three-year-old could walk that far to where he lived. However, as all the previous searching efforts were in vain, he decided to try his luck around his own house.
Not long after he went out into the woods, he was surprised by what came into his sight. There was Christopher! Aside from being dehydrated and very hungry, the kid was completely unharmed. He was found outside the range where authorities were looking for him, so it’s pretty amazing that Tim discovered him.

"Mary, I hate to call Rob in the mornings. He’s growing so fast and he needs his sleep. If you could see how sound he sleeps when l go m to wake him up! I wish I could manage alone. "
"Well, you can't, Adam. "His mother's voice was quick and light. "Besides, he isn't a child any more. It's time he took his turn. "
"Yes, "his father said slowly, "But I sure do hate to wake him. "
A few days before Christmas that year when he was fifteen, Rob heard these words. and something in him spoke: his father loved him! He had never thought of that before, for neither his father nor his mother talked about loving their children—they had no time for such things. There was always so much to do on the farm.
They were poor, and most of the excitement for Christmas was in the turkey and the pies his mother made. His sisters sewed presents and his mother and father always bought him something he needed, not only a warm jacket, maybe, but something more, such as a book. And he saved and bought them each something, too.
He had gone to the ten-cent store and bought a tie as usual. It had seemed nice enough until he lay thinking the night before Christmas. He wished that he had a better present for his father.
A thought struck him like a silver lightning. Why should he not give his father a special gift in the barn(牛棚) He could getup early, earlier than four o'clock and he could move quietly and slowly into the barn and get all the milking done. He'd do it alone, milk and clean up, and then when his father went in to start the milking, he'd see it all done. He laughed to himself as he gazed at the stars, it was what he would do, and he mustn't sleep too sound.

2022届广东省广州市高三一模考试英语试题(解析版)
【答案】 Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes were disquieting sounds from hell to me, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed in it nervously.
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was segmented and occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange for my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment.

【答案】One possible version:
The next morning, we girls were playing in the living room when Ruth let out a sudden cry. “Hey, who broke Gingerbread Baby ” Ruth asked. That brought Polly to the living room fast. “Where Show me!” Ruth pointed at the former baby cookie, which was now just a head, still tied to the tree by its red ribbon. “Here’s another broken one,” said Sue. It’s Gingerbread Grandpa. Or it was. Now it’s just his head and hat. That caused some inspection, and soon it was clear that all the gingerbread men were now just gingerbread heads.
“It wasn’t me,” I said, in case anybody thought I’d had a midnight snack of rock-hard decorations. Quickly, my sisters made denials of their own. Then we girls and Polly all looked at Jake. Until that moment, Jake had been sitting by Dad, looking happy as ever. Suddenly, his posture changed. Guilt spread over his face. With his head bowed a little, he tried not to meet Polly’s eyes, but it was clear what had happened. It was as if he were wearing a sign that said, “I killed an entire gingerbread family.”

【答案】That evening. I was surfing online and saw a friend’s children playing with their new cat. An idea hit me. “Why not get her a pet ” I thought to myself. Acting on a sudden inspiration, I logged in a pet shelter website and went straight to Micah’s room. "Sweetie, I've got a surprise for you." I showed her the pictures of those cats that she could adopt. With her mouth wide opening, she simply couldn’t take her eyes off those cute creatures. Finally she pointed to a baby cat with yellow spots on the head.
“This is the one I want "she said, smiling. We paid online and the next day the little angel was delivered to our house. Micah gently scooped it up into her arms and planted her face into the soft fur and then Micah smiled at me with a tender look, "thank you, mum." A huge wave of warmth flooded all over my body and it seemed like a wall between us torn down. My silence drew her attention and she looked at me again, throwing herself in my arms. “I love you, mum.”

At a quarter to three, he got up and put on his clothe. He crept downstairs careful of the creaky boards, and let himself out. The cows looked at him, sleepy and surprised. It was early for them, too. He had never milked all alone before, but the task went more easily than he had ever known it to go before. Milking for once was not a chore. It was something else, a gift to his father w ho loved him. He finished, the two milk cans were full, and he covered them and closed the milkhouse door carefully.
Back in his room, he had only a minute to pull off his clothes in the darkness and jumped into bed, for he heard his father up. The door opened and his father woke him as usual. "Aw-right, " he said sleepily. The door closed and he la y still, laughing to himself. Then a few minutes later, the door opened again and his father was standing by his bed, feeling for him, pulling away the cover. "Rob, I thank you. Nobody ever did a nicer thing. ", He found his father and he ld him tightly in a great hug. "It's for Christmas, Dad!-His heart was bursting with love.
