三、阅读单选
In a village there lived a man named Henry. He had a wish to let poor people have meals at his home every day. But his wife didn’t like this at all. She thought it a waste.
One day, when he was on his way to another village, he met a poor boy. He asked the boy to have his meal with him.
He said, “Please go to my place. I will be back home soon.”
The boy got to Henry’s house. The wife naturally got angry when she saw the visitor at the door. But she thought, “My husband is not at home. I must make this unwanted visitor go!”
So she welcomed him in and gave him a glass of water. Then she started to cry. When the boy asked her why, she said, “It is my husband’s idea to let people have meals at home. Then he ties them and beats them with a stick (棍子). That is the reason why I am sad.”
Hearing this, the poor boy was afraid and asked her to save him. The wife then let him out of the house through the back door.
When Henry returned home, his wife told him, “What a strange person the boy was! When he came in, he asked me for a stick and a piece of strong rope. I was afraid, and I said no. Then he left the house angrily.”
Henry said, “Maybe he wanted these for some use. Give me the stick and the rope. I will go and find him.” He started running after the boy.
The boy walked slowly, thinking about the strange thing, so he did not go far. When he looked back, he saw Henry running after him with the stick and the rope in his hands.
When Henry shouted, “Please wait! ”, the poor boy ran away quickly.

Dear Motherland,
Happy birthday! You are 71 years old! How wonderful it is!
Over the past 71 years, many great changes have taken place.
Look! Our life has changed a lot! My grandma often tells me that in the past, life was hard. Every person was allowed to buy only 250 grams(克)of meat per month. Today we can buy whatever we want and eat as much meat as we like.
Look! Our cities have changed a lot! We have cleaner rivers, wider roads and clearer skies. We learned in our history classes that in the 1980s, Pudong was full of farm fields. There were few parks or shopping malls at the time. Today, Pudong has the world’s second-tallest building. People also have more ways to spend their weekends. They can go shopping, watch movies with friends or take a walk in a park.
China’s transportation(交通)has also changed greatly. My father remembers that in 1992, he spent 22 hours traveling from Shanghai to Beijing by train. Today the world’s fastest high-speed train rushes between Shanghai and Beijing. A one-way trip takes only four hours and 18 minutes.
The older generations(一代人)worked hard to make these changes happen. The future now lies in the hands of us young people. I believe we can make you stronger!
Best wishes,
A teenager from Shanghai
41.The writer’s grandma thinks the life was easy for her in the past.
42.We can eat as much meat as we like today.

How to Keep Safe
Life is only once, so safety is important for us teenagers. But how can we keep safe Here are some suggestions.
First, we should get on well with our classmates at school. Don’t fight with them. If we really have trouble in communicating with them, we can ask our teachers for help. Second, we should be careful when we make friends, especially on line. We shouldn’t meet net-friends alone. Third, we’d better buy and eat food carefully. We should eat healthy food such as vegetables and fruit. Don’t eat junk food. Eating food that goes bad will do harm to our health. Fourth, we must obey the traffic rules when we go out. Don’t cross the street when the traffic lights are red. Besides, summer is coming and we must remember it’s dangerous to swim in the river.
In a word, safety must come first!
