April Fool’s Day is a celebration that 1.takes place in different countries around the world. It happens on April 1 st every year and is a day when many people play all kinds of tricks and jokes on each other.
One April Fool’s Day, a reporter in England 2.announced that there would be no more spaghetti because the spaghetti farmers in Italy had stopped growing spaghetti. Many people ran to their local supermarkets to buy as much spaghetti as they could. 3.By the time people realized that the story was a hoax, all of the spaghetti across the country had 4.been sold out. In another famous trick a TV show in England reported the 5.discovery of special water. They said this water would help people lose weight and that one customer had already lost a lot of weight in just four months. By the end of the day, more than 10,000 people had phoned the TV station to find out how to get this water .
Many April Fool’s jokes may end up 6.being not very funny. A famous TV star once invited his girlfriend onto his show on April Fool’s Day. He asked her 7.to marry him. The lady was so happy because she really wanted to get married. However, when she said yes, he replied, “April Fool!”That little joke didn’t have a very happy ending .The TV star lost his girlfriend and his show 8.was canceled.
One of the worlds 9.most famous tricks, however, happened in October rather than in April. In that month in 1938, actor Orson Welles announced on his radio program that aliens from Mars had landed on the earth. He described where they had landed and told how they were moving 10.across the United States. Welles made it sound so real that hundreds of people believed the story, and fear spread across the whole country. By the time police officers announced that the story was a hoax ,thousands of people had 1eft their homes.

二.选词填空(12选10)
final love both watch call terrify suppose see actively if care unlike
Hard work comes first
I’m a procrastinator (有拖延症的人). In college, I was 1.supposed to spend a year on my 90-page senior thesis. I didn’t write a word until three days before the deadline. 2.Finally, I wrote 90 pages over 72 hours, pulling not one but two all-nighters to finish just before the deadline. Of course, it was a very bad thesis.
I have a hypothesis (假设) that the brains of procrastinators and non-procrastinators are actually different.
3.Both brains have a Rational (理性的) Decision-Maker in them who has us do whatever makes sense to be doing right now. But the procrastinator’s brain also has an Instant Gratification (及时行乐) Monkey who doesn’t like that plan and only 4.cares about two things: easy and fun.
For the procrastinator, it is the Monkey that actually takes the wheel. But, how can they start working when really important things happen It turns out the procrastinator also has a Panic Monster. He is not 5.active most of the time, but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close. He’s the only thing the Instant Gratification Monkey is 6.terrified of.
7.Seeing the Panic Monster, the Instant Gratification Monkey goes up a tree and hides! The Rational Decision-Maker can then take the wheel and the procrastinator can start working.
This explains how the procrastinator’s system works. But 8.if it works, why bother
Well, it’s because there are situations in our lives that don’t have deadlines, 9.like seeing your family or exercising. In all of these non-deadline situations, the Panic Monster doesn’t show up. So the procrastinator’s system actually doesn’t start work.
So what should we do Maybe we can make something 10.called a Life Calendar. That’s one box for every week of a 90-year life. We need to take a long, hard look at that calendar and think about what we’re really procrastinating on.
三.任务型阅读
(A)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,按要求完成任务。
Every year, 12,000 to 14,000 earthquakes happen around the world, killing tens of thousands of lives. So when it comes to monitoring (监测) earthquakes, every second counts. Recently, a new AI system developed by China is shortening the time it will take to detect (探测) earthquakes.
“This is the first earthquake monitoring AI system in China and the world,” Zhu Huiyu, a researcher at the University of Science and Technology of China, told China News. “It can detect earthquakes in real time.”
After an earthquake happens, most researchers can quickly publish the time, place, magnitude (震级) and depth of the earthquake. However, they often don’t include the focal mechanism parameters (震源机制参数), which can be used to predict the possible distribution (分布) of strong aftershocks (余震). “ It takes three to 10 minutes for other countries to publish earthquake focal mechanism parameters, but by this time, the earthquake has fully happened and the damage has been done,” Zhu said. “This new system can provide the focal mechanism parameters within just one second and release the information before the aftershocks reach some areas.”
“If we are able to receive the warning information three seconds earlier after an earthquake occurs, we’ll be able to reduce casualties (伤亡人数) by 14 percent. With 10 seconds earlier, casualties can be reduced by 39 percent,” Zhu said.
This improvement is possible thanks to a deep learning method. The system is trained with millions of earthquake samples (样本). It’s now being tested in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces.
Earthquake warning vs prediction
Can the new system predict an earthquake It can’t, unfortunately. In fact, we still have no reliable (可靠的) way to predict earthquakes. It’s a very difficult task that scientists are working on.
Earthquake prediction is different from earthquake warning. A warning means that an earthquake is detected quickly enough that people can take action before the ground starts to shake.
Answer the questions:
1. According to the first two paragraphs, what can the new earthquake monitoring AI system do
1) It can shorten the time it will take to detect earthquakes.
2) It can detect and release earthquake information in real time.
2. Why are the focal mechanism parameters important
Because they can be used to predict the possible distribution of strong aftershocks.
3. How long does it take the new system to provide the focal mechanism parameters
In about one second.
4. What can we infer about the new system from Paragraph 4
It might help us save lives when earthquakes happen.
5. According to the last paragraph, how was the AI system developed
It was developed with the help of a deep learning method.
(B)
You might live in an apartment building without a front yard. In the US, families that live in the suburbs (郊区), or in small villages and towns, usually have their own yard. It might seem like just a boring patch of grass at first. But many people use decorations to make their yards more lively.
Yard decoration trends have changed over time. People started putting plastic pink flamingos (火烈鸟) in their yards in the 1950s and 1960s. (A).It’s said that these flamingos reminded people of faraway beaches and other fun places. They’re not really in style anymore, but for a long time, they were part of suburban American life. You can still see them in some yards, especially in warmer places.
There’s also the garden gnome (土地精). (B).In some stories, gnomes are said to have a magical connection to nature, so they are often associated (相关联的) with forests and gardens. Some people think these gnomes can watch over their gardens and help them grow. Of course, (C).this is just a superstition (迷信). My mother has a few garden gnome decorations that she’s had since I was a small child.
Speaking of my mom - one of her favorite yard decorations is wind chimes (风铃). I used to buy her a new wind chime for different holidays - birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day. And each time, she would hang up the new chime in our yard. Over the years, we built a symphony (交响乐) of chimes in her yard. They’re still making music to this day.
these gnomes can watch over their gardens and help them grow
4.写出美国人装饰庭院的2种常见事物:
the garden gnome,plastic pink flamingos
5.概括文章的主题:
Many American people use decorations to make their yards more lively.中小学教育资源及组卷应用平台

I’m a procrastinator (有拖延症的人). In college, I was 1.________to spend a year on my 90-page senior thesis.I didn’t write a word until three days before the deadline. 2.________, I wrote 90 pages over 72 hours, pulling not one but two all-nighters to finish just before the deadline. Of course, it was a very bad thesis.
I have a hypothesis (假设) that the brains of procrastinators and non-procrastinators are actually different.
3._______brains have a Rational (理性的) Decision-Maker in them who has us do whatever makes sense to be doing right now. But the procrastinator’s brain also has an Instant Gratification (及时行乐) Monkey who doesn’t like that plan and only 4.________about two things: easy and fun.
For the procrastinator, it is the Monkey that actually takes the wheel. But, how can they start working when really important things happen It turns out the procrastinator also has a Panic Monster. He is not 5.________most of the time, but he suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close. He’s the only thing the Instant Gratification Monkey is 6.________of.
7.________the Panic Monster, the Instant Gratification Monkey goes up a tree and hides! The Rational Decision-Maker can then take the wheel and the procrastinator can start working.
This explains how the procrastinator’s system works. But 8._______it works, why bother
Well, it’s because there are situations in our lives that don’t have deadlines, 9.________seeing your family or exercising. In all of these non-deadline situations, the Panic Monster doesn’t show up. So the procrastinator’s system actually doesn’t start work.
So what should we do Maybe we can make something 10.________a Life Calendar. That’s one box for every week of a 90-year life. We need to take a long, hard look at that calendar and think about what we’re really procrastinating on.

“It takes three to 10 minutes for other countries to publish earthquake focal mechanism parameters, but by this time, the earthquake has fully happened and the damage has been done,” Zhu said.
TEENS
1. According to the first two paragraphs, what can the new earthquake monitoring AI system do
Why are the focal mechanism parameters important
How long does it take the new system to provide the focal mechanism parameters
4. What can we infer about the new system from Paragraph 4
5. According to the last paragraph , how was the AI system developed

(A)It’s said that these flamingos reminded people of faraway beaches and other fun places. They’re not really in style anymore, but for a long time, they were part of suburban American life. You can still see them in some yards, especially in warmer places.
There’s also the garden gnome (土地精). (B)In some stories, gnomes are said to have a magical connection to nature, so they are often associated (相关联的) with forests and gardens.
