Carnival: One Day in Rio
Last year I went to the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, and it blew my mind. It had been my dream to attend the famous carnival for many years, so I was excited. However, the moment I arrived, I was a little bit nervous because there were so many people on the streets. They say that five or six million people come to Rio during carnival time and about two million of them are on the streets on any given day. Luckily, I had a local guide, my sister’s friend Ronnie. He said he would take care of me and show me all the highlights. He did not let me down.
Well, the carnival is most definitely all about the samba. It’s a style of music and dance which has its roots in Africa. Lots of Africans were used as slave labor by the Portuguese when Brazil was being colonized, so this mixed culture of African, Latin and European styles is really strong here. Samba music is usually fast and exciting with a lot of drums and harmonic vocals. It’s the kind of music that you can’t help dancing to, and I was learning that as I followed Ronnie through the crowd, my hips and shoulders were swinging almost involuntarily.
Ronnie had got us tickets for the samba parade, the icon of Brazilian culture, inside the Sambadrome where the top samba schools compete for the championship title, but we still had a long way to go through the street parties. He said most people enjoy the carnival by making their own parties in the street. About the samba parade, twelve main teams compete for the championship, and if they win, their performance will be talked about for years to come. So, you must be wondering how it was. Well, I’m afraid I can’t tell you. Ronnie and I never made into the Sambadrome. We spent the day moving from one street party to another. There were more snacks, more drinks and lots of dancing. Do I regret missing the main parade Not at all. I experienced the carnival like the locals, and it was truly amazing.
24.What was the main cause for the author’s tension in the beginning
A.The doubts about the visit. B.The nervousness over the crowd.
C.The inability to find a local guide. D.The anxiety about visiting a new country.
25.What can we learn about samba from this passage
A.Samba has its roots in America.
B.Samba is not the taste of the writer.
C.Samba has a long and mixed culture.
D.Samba music is usually slow and soft.
26.The author didn’t regret missing the parade because ________.
A.she met some amazing local people
B.she didn’t have the tickets for the parade
C.she celebrated the festival in a local way
D.she enjoyed the carnival by making her own parties
27.According to the passage, which of the following words can best describe Ronnie
A.Modest and determined. B.Humorous and ambitious.
C.Creative and sympathetic D.Reliable and considerate.
C
Do you ever talk to yourself Although it’s not always a conscious habit, most of us practice self-talk on a daily basis, as a way of guiding, motivating or supporting ourselves.
Over the years, research has shown that self-talk can increase productivity, motivation and confidence, and even help manage feelings. “There is solid evidence that self-talk strategies improve learning and performance,” according to sport psychologist Antonis Hatzigeorgiadis, who studies the phenomenon of self-talk.
He explains that there are generally three reasons why we practice self-talk: to instruct, to motivate or to evaluate. Instructional self-talk happens when we need to guide ourselves through a specific task, such as learning a new skill. Motivational self-talk usually is used when we want to prepare ourselves for something challenging; it can help to increase confidence. Evaluative self-talk mostly is related to past events or actions.
Hatzigeorgiadis stresses that if we want to use such self-talk to good advantage, it needs to be short, precise and, most of all, consistent. Of course, self-talk also can be ineffective and even detrimental if it’s not done right.
“It is a matter of personal preference or what works for each person; but generally, it is advised that self-talk be positively rather than negatively phrased and focus on what you should do rather than on what you should avoid,” Hatzigeorgiadis says. So, for example, it would be better to say “stay cool” instead of “don’t get upset”. Although both instructions convey the same meaning, you should use positive words rather than negative ones. In this way you can avoid ill results.
Another thing that can make a difference when practicing self-talk is the way you address yourself. According to research published in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, using “you” rather than “I” when talking to yourself tends to be more effective. The researchers explain that when you think of yourself as another person, it allows you to give more objective and useful feedback.
28.What does the research say about self-talk
A.It is a daily habit for everyone. B.It can make people feel better.
C.It may help strengthen memory. D.It is always an unconscious behavior.
29.What can be concluded from Hatzigeorgiadis’ explanation
A.Self-talk occurs in different situations. B.Self-talk usually makes one brave.
C.Self-talk arises with various feelings. D.Self-talk is closely linked with a certain task.
30.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Confusing. B.Useless. C.Harmful. D.Unbearable.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Self-talk: a close relation to the past
B.Self-talk: a great way to avoid ill results
C.Self-talk: a useful tool to benefit our life
D.Self-talk: a matter of personal preference
D
Did you know that you have been involved in the largest research study in the United States but you never agreed to join in it That’s because since 1996, you—and basically everyone you know—have been eating genetically modified (GM, 转基因) foods.
GM foods are made by forcing a piece of DNA from a totally different species into the DNA of a plant or animal. This method creates a whole new species of plant that would have never existed in nature. Most soybeans, corn and cotton are genetically modified. Products such as oil and sugar are created from these crops and added to processed foods. This explains why nearly 80 percent of processed and most fast foods contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
The question is, are GMOs safe for us and the environment Actually, the answers are not clear. There are no long-term studies showing that GMOs are safe for humans and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not do its own safety testing of GMOS. Instead, the biotech companies that are trying to make money do their own safety testing, which the FDA only reviews. However, there are animal studies with negative findings, including damage in some body parts and immune system changes. It is clear we need more research in this area.
The environment is another problem. What are the results when a genetically modified plant crossbreeds with other plants Do we really want to change the face of plant life with unknown results for the benefit of a few large companies
The bottom line is that we have a product in our food supply with unknown health and environmental problems. At the very least, we should have these foods labeled (贴标签). However, try as we might, we cannot make that happen in the U.S. Even though 9 out of 10 people want them labeled, the biotech companies and food producers do not. If their products are beneficial and safe, why not label them Why not be proud of your products Over 60 countries such as China label GMOs and some countries ban them. Why can’t we have transparency in our food supply
Washington’s Initiative 522, a bill suggesting labeling products with GMOs, will help us get the transparency we desire. But companies such as Monsanto, Dupont Pioneer will pay millions to create misleading and incorrect ads insisting that labeling will cost money, hurt farmers, and isn’t necessary because GMOs are safe. The biggest fear of these companies is that once GMOs are labeled, we won’t want to eat them anymore.
I don’t know about you, but I think if Washington’s Initiative 522 passes and genetically modified foods are labeled, it might change the face of American agriculture forever.
32.What do we know about GM foods from Para.1 and 2
A.They are the source of most fast foods.
B.They are consumed by everyone in the world.
C.They come from the longest research study in the USA.
D.They are produced by changing the DNA of a plant or animal.
33.What is the author’s attitude towards the safety of GMOs
A.Doubtful. B.Objective C.Positive D.Uninterested
34.In Para.5, the underlined words “have transparency in” probably mean ______.
A.build up B.depend on C.cut off D.know about
35.Why does the author write this passage
A.To call for more research on GM foods.
B.To persuade companies to label GM foods.
C.To gain support for Washington’s Initiative 522.
D.To demand FDA to develop a food testing system.

My Favorite Festival
Of all the Chinese traditional festivals, I like Dragon Boat Festival best. Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duan Wu Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which has a history of more than 2000 years.
The main reason I like it is mainly its origin. It is said that a patriotic poet — Qu Yuan throw himself into the river to express his love for country, so the people put the dumplings into the river to feed the fish in the hope that the fish will not harm the body of Qu Yuan. Slowly, we eat zongzi as a custom to honor him. Besides its history and its sweet food, the activity on that day also attracts me a lot. On that day, you can enjoy a performance about the legend and watch live broadcast of dragon boat racing, which is a visual feast.
I am always happy at the traditional day.
