Dear Managing Director,
As you know, money was recently received for improvements to the café, and the Board (董事会) has made some suggestions about how to spend it. The purpose of this letter is to show the reaction of the staff (全体员工) to your ideas and to present some suggestions of our own.
As we understand it, the Board has three main suggestions:
·to repaint the walls and hang curtains
·to buy longer tables and more chairs
·to brighten up the café with plants
We are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. This would certainly make the café more attractive. However, we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants, we feel the money could be better spent on other things. Our suggestions are:
·to buy a new dishwashing machine. The present machine is of poor quality and doesn't always clean the dishes well.
·to buy a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down very often and takes a long time to get repaired.
Also, would it be possible to change our servicing company
·to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table.
·to buy new staff uniforms (制服). The present uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive.
We hope that our suggestions will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines.
We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient (方便的) time.

This is an unusual little kindness I'm sharing here. It isn't even really that kind. But I am sharing because it took some strength and I'm sharing because I'm proud of myself.
Earlier today when I was out shopping with my 4 year old son, he was in a real playful mood (心情), holding my hand, jumping up and down, and swinging on and off me. And quite honestly it made me angry. It was so annoying (烦人的)! He kept pulling my arm back one way then the other. I wanted to yell at him. I wanted to “punish” him. But I didn't.
Instead of reacting instantly (立刻) to this annoyance I watched it or more so, watched myself. I watched how angry I was getting. Then I thought, “Nicole, is this really that bad He is 4. He is bored but at the same time you dragged (拖拉) him around a shopping centre from shop to shop just for you. Not him. He is bored. This isn't fun for him and he is trying to make it so.”
“Let it go.” The voice said, “Let it go.” So I did. My son continued doing this annoying arm swinging, pulling my arm and jumping up and down. And he continued to peeve_me. But I didn't react. I didn't yell at him. I didn't make him feel bad for “having fun”. I allowed it. I allowed him to be him.
And that is what I'm proud of today. It took real effort on my part to be this sort of “kind”. But without a doubt it was the right thing to do.

Have you ever heard the expression “when pigs fly”? It is a saying people use to express that something is very unlikely to happen — as unlikely as pigs growing wings and flying like a bird! For example, a person who hates riding roller coasters (过山车) might tell a friend, “I'll go on that ride with you when pigs fly.”
Well, one pig in San Francisco may not be flying, but she is helping people relax before they fly in a plane.
LiLou is a small pig working at the San Francisco airport. She is a therapy (理疗) animal. That means she is calm and likes to be touched by humans. She and other therapy animals aim to help travelers who get nervous about flying in planes. She was trained by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
This is LiLou's first week on the job as a member of the airport's “wag brigade”. She only works at the airport once a month, so not all travelers to the San Francisco airport will see her. But you might see some of her fellow therapy animals.
She works alongside a group of trained dogs. Their trainers walk around the airport with them. The animals wear signs that say “pet me”!
LiLou has been getting a lot of attention at the airport and on social media. One Twitter user said he made fun of the San Francisco airport's decision to provide a relaxing yoga room for travelers, but he “fully supports LiLou”.
Jennifer Henley is the manager of the SPCA's program. “It's wonderful to witness (看到) the surprise and delight that LiLou brings to people during therapy visits,” she said.
8.Why does the author mention an expression about pigs

A.It has trained many therapy animals.
B.It will put LiLou in a relaxing yoga room.
C.It has great concerns about passengers' safety.
D.It thinks of more than one way to help passengers relax.
11.What is Jennifer Henley's attitude towards the pig program
A.Proud. B.Surprised.
C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

Very soon the new series of ITV's Love Island will be starting. It's a show that sends single people abroad to live in a house. The audience at home then watches their highs and lows and how their relationships form and fall apart.
Love_Island_is_just_the_tip_of_a_huge_reality_TV_iceberg_(冰山). Other popular British programmes include I'm a Celebrity, Big Brother and Geordie Shore. All these shows have something in common: people seem to either love them or hate them.
Perhaps we love them so much because they actually use real people instead of characters. Series and films with actors are great to watch but they aren't real. We become more interested in reality TV because the “characters” are real and not acting.
Maybe we love reality TV because the people often show the extremes (极端) of our society. Shows featuring normal people often include people with strong personalities who are certain to argue.
However, reality TV isn't popular with everyone. Some people consider it sad to watch it. I've often heard people say that if you watch reality TV, it's a sign that your own life is boring. Why would you watch someone else's life when you have your own to live Why would you want to sit at home and watch someone else arguing about foolish things on the TV
Some people don't like reality TV because they believe it doesn't show true reality. The people in these programmes are regularly accused of acting and you often see a phrase flash up somewhere during the opening or closing credits (字幕) informing that parts are set up.
Whether you love or hate reality TV, it cannot be denied that this type has increased in popularity over time, and while I understand it can be set up sometimes, I'm still so excited for Love Island to be back on our screens!
12.What does the author mean by “Love Island is just the tip of a huge reality TV iceberg”?
A.There are a large number of reality TV shows in Britain.
B.There is much more to be discovered about reality TV shows.
C.Love Island is not the most popular reality TV show in Britain.
D.Reality TV shows like Love Island are facing different opinions.
13.Why do people love reality TV shows
A.The shows present people's real life to audience.
B.The shows can reflect social problems in reality.
C.They are disappointed about characters' acting skills.
D.They would like to watch famous people argue or fight.
14.For what reason do people think watching reality TV is a sad thing
A.The arguments in it are always foolish.
B.It will make you bored with your own life.
C.You only do it when you have nothing else to do.
D.It shows that you are not satisfied with your own life.
15.What is the author's attitude towards reality TV shows

Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
参考范文:
Dear Manager,
My name is Li Hua.I'm writing to complain about the bad service on one of your flights.
Yesterday, I took a plane to London and I have to say that I'm very unhappy about the line.
First of all, your airline lost one of my suitcases in which there is an important contract.Second, the plane was delayed for an hour.As a result, I was late for an important meeting. Third, the food on the plane was terrible. What's most unacceptable is that the air hostesses on the plane were quite unfriendly and impolite to me.
Frankly speaking, this is the worst experience I have ever had on a plane.I do hope you can help me find my suitcase and improve your service.
Thank you very much.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
