United Nations Climate Change Conference
The U.N. Climate Change Conference opened in Copenhagen, Denmark on Dec. 7th with some 15,000 delegates and observers from nearly 200 countries attending what is called the last best chance for an agreement to combat (与……战斗) global warming.
Their aim is to find common ground, including on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, promotion and transfer of new more eco friendly technology and the necessary funding to make this possible, especially for the less developed and poorer nations. It also means coming up with long term vision and cooperation for the future.
Most scientists believe the warming trend is mainly caused by human activity, especially the use of fossil fuels (矿物燃料) and the cutting down of forests. Skeptics (怀疑论者) say global warming is part of a natural cycle of climate change.
In Copenhagen, experts and officials alike are putting the emphasis on what people and governments can do to cut the emission of greenhouse gases.
Scientists say a 25 to 40 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions is needed to control global warming. The European Union, China, and India have already pledged (保证) reductions. The United States is waiting for Congressional (国会的) approval for a proposal put forward by the Obama administration.
Barack Obama, President of the United States said, “Each of us must do what we can when we can to grow our economies without endangering our planet — and we must all do it together. We must seize the opportunity to make Copenhagen a significant step forward in the global fight against climate change.”
Desmond Tutu, Archbishop of South Africa said, “Worldwide, we have the chance to start turning the tide of climate change, but only if all governments commit themselves to a fair, binding (有约束力的) and sustainable climate agreement in Copenhagen.”

You might think that “global warming” means nothing more than a rise in the world's temperature. But, rising sea levels caused by it have resulted in the first evacuation (撤离) of an island nation — the citizens of Tuvalu will have to leave their homeland.
During the 20th century, sea level rose 8 12 inches. As a result, Tuvalu has experienced lowland flooding of salt water which has polluted the country's drinking water.
Paani Laupepa, a Tuvaluan government official, reported to the Earth Policy Institute that the nation suffered an unusually high number of fierce storms in the past ten years. Many scientists connect higher surface water temperatures resulting from global warming to greater and more damaging storms.
Laupepa expressed dissatisfaction with the United States for refusing to sign the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement calling for industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions (导致温室效应的气体排放), which are a main cause of global warming. “By refusing to sign the agreement, the US has effectively taken away the freedom of future generations of Tuvaluans to live where their forefathers have lived for thousands of years,” Laupepa told the BBC.
Tuvalu has asked Australia and New Zealand to allow the gradual move of its people to both countries.
Tuvalu is not the only country that is vulnerable (易受影响的) to rising sea levels. Maumoon Gayoon, president of the Maldives, told the United Nations that global warming has made his country of 311,000 an “endangered nation”.

A.agree to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions
B.sign an agreement with Tuvalu
C.allow Tuvaluans to move to the US

In an effort to discourage people from using plastics, scientists have been hard at work inventing alternative packaging products. From water bottles made from seaweed to cutlery (餐具) made from rice and wheat, a number of inventions are set to change the way we eat while we are on the go, or having a relaxing picnic in the park.
The idea of using seaweed to make eco friendly (环保的) water bottles has been around for a few years. Recently, Ari Jonsson took his invention — a water bottle made from red seaweed — to show off at a festival. The bottles will only hold their shape as long as they are filled. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin to break down, though they would be perfectly safe to eat. Ari Jonsson's bottles are a step closer to a widely used alternative to the current plastic ones.
The eatable water container is not the only product to add to our image of the future. Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. After the success of his spoons, Mr. Pessapaty is ready to expand and introduce forks and chopsticks to his menu. His aim is to largely reduce the amount of plastic waste, which is a huge problem for waste sites all over the world. It is a product that may take up to 500 years to break down, and recycling companies worldwide are struggling to deal with it.
Aside from the obvious benefits to the environment, this new packaging is also cheap to produce and therefore cheap to buy. Even better is the fact that similar eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just fun with friends. Why not get experimenting and create your own recipes

Living among trees, plants and flowers can fill your life with beauty. And if you are a woman, it can also help you live longer.
Women who live in homes surrounded by plants appear to have lower death rates than women who live in areas with less green plants, according to a research.
Peter James and his team looked at information from one of the largest and oldest investigations of women's health: the Nurses' Health Study.
For the new study, the team looked at the death rates of more than 100,000 women between the years 2008 and 2015. Then the researchers compared the death rates of these women to the green plants around their homes. To determine the amount of trees and other vegetation (植被), researchers examined satellite images.
To make it more believable, the researchers considered other risk factors — things such as the age of the women, their economic status, and race. They also looked at whether or not the women smoked.
Peter James says he and his team were surprised to find such a strong link between high vegetation levels and low death rates. He adds they were also surprised to find how high levels of plant life can affect a woman's mental health.
The study suggests that living among vegetation lowered levels of depression. Researchers say women in greener areas spent more time with other people, exercised more and were less exposed to air pollution.
One of the biggest effects of greenery appeared to be a lowered risk of cancer. Here are some numbers. The study found that women living in the greenest areas had a 13 percent lower rate of dying from cancer.
James says that it is common knowledge that vegetation helps the environment in many ways. But, he adds, the new findings suggest ways for city planners, landscape architects and policymakers to grow even healthier living areas.

The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an ecological disaster area.Nauru's heartbreaking story could have one good consequence — other countries might learn from its mistakes.
For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798.He was the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship.He called the island Pleasant Island.
However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with Europeans at first. Then whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the island.A ten year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.
Nauru's real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered phosphate (磷酸盐) on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all phosphate, which is a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began mining the phosphate.
A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine. When a company strip mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants.Strip mining totally destroys the land.Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to look like the moon.
In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world.Every year the government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate.
Unfortunately, the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they used millions more dollars for personal expenses.Soon people realized that they had a terrible problem — their phosphate was running out.Ninety percent of their island was destroyed and they had nothing.By 2000, Nauru was almost financially ruined.Experts say that it would take approximately $433,600,000 and more than 20 years to repair the island. This will probably never happen.

1.What was Nauru like before the Europeans came
A.Rich and powerful. B.Modern and open.
C.Peaceful and attractive. D.Greedy and aggressive.
解析:选C 推理判断题。根据第一段第一句“...used to be a beautiful place.”以及第二段第一句“...lived on the remote island of Nauru, far from western civilization.”可知,瑙鲁在欧洲人到来之前是一个安定而美丽的地方。A项“富有和强大的”,B项“现代化和开放的”,D项“贪婪和富有侵略性的”,均与文章信息不符。
2.The ecological disaster in Nauru resulted from ________.
A.soil pollution B.phosphate overmining
C.farming activity D.whale hunting
3.Which of the following was a cause of Nauru's financial problem
A.Its leaders misused the money.
B.It spent too much repairing the island.

In one of the world's most forbidding environments, polar bears spend their summers wandering the Arctic on large pieces of floating ice. They drift for hundreds of miles, finding mates, hunting for seals, and fattening themselves up for the winter.Without the floating ice, the world's largest bears could not survive.Yet at this moment, the polar bears' Arctic habitat is melting away because of global warming.Over the past three decades, more than a million square miles of floating ice has disappeared.
Scientists predict that, if the current rate of global warming continues, most, if not all, of the bears' floating ice will be gone by 2100.As a result, the world's polar bears could face global extinction by the end of this century.
Already, the ice on the southern edge of the polar bears' range is melting about three weeks earlier than in the past. The loss of those weeks leaves the bears less tune to hunt, eat and store up fat.Once the ice melts, the bears must fast (禁食) for up to eight months on land until the floating ice returns. As a result of early melting, there has been a 14 percent decline in the Hudson Bay polar bear population over the past ten years — a decline clearly caused by global warming.
Besides, a growing number of polar bears may be drowning as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, in search of ice sheets.According to a report by the US Minerals Management Service, researchers observed four dead polar bears floating 60 miles off Alaska in September and it was likely that many other bears swimming far off the shore also drowned.
Scientists have concluded that the worldwide population of about 20,000 polar bears is likely to shrink by more than 30 percent in the next 35 to 50 years alone.

1.What is the main idea of the passage
A.Polar bears can't die out in the next century.
B.The happy summer of polar bears is disappearing.
C.Continuous global warming will cause the extinction of polar bears.
D.More and more dead polar bears will be found off the coast of Alaska.
解析:选C 主旨大意题。根据第二段“Scientists predict that, if the current rate of global warming continues, most, if not all, of the bears' floating ice will be gone by 2100.As a result, the world's polar bears could face global extinction by the end of this century.”可知,如果全球气候持续变暖的话,北极熊的家园就会消失,它们也会濒临灭绝,因此选C。

解析:选D 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“Besides, a growing number of polar bears may be drowning as they are forced to swim more often, and for longer distances, in search of ice sheets.”可知,淹死是造成北极熊数量下降的一个原因。A项与文章中的“the bears must fast (禁食) for up to eight months on land”矛盾,B项的描述与文章意义矛盾,其中的better应该是worse。C项中35到50年后有20 000只北极熊错误。
4.What is the writer's attitude to polar bears' extinction
A.Objective. B.Subjective.
C.Optimistic. D.Doubtful.

There is no doubt that our lives wouldn't be the same without cars. But they can also be a problem, especially fossil fuel (化石燃料) cars, which have become a major cause of air pollution.
So to help improve the environment, China is going to ban the production and sales of fossil fuel cars. Xin Guobin, China's vice minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said research into the ban has already started, but it hasn't been decided when the ban will go into effect. “These measures will promote big changes in the environment and give motivation to China's auto industry development,” he said.
The move is just one of China's many efforts to lift pressure on the environment after it promised to stop the rise in its carbon dioxide emissions (排放物) by 2030.
Chinese drivers are already big fans of electric vehicles. Chinese auto companies including BYD, BAIC and Geely ranked among the top in the world in terms of electric car sales last year. And more than 40 percent of the 753,000 electric vehicles sold worldwide last year were sold in China.
Meanwhile, the ban of fossil fuel cars is increasingly becoming a global trend. In July, 2017, the French government announced that France would end sales of fossil fuel vehicles by 2040 as part of the country's plan to meet its goal under the Paris climate accord. And in the same month, the UK followed suit with a similar plan. It also set 2040 as its deadline to stop sales of new fossil fuel vehicles.
“All of us who drive or use fossil fuel vehicles are contributing to the city's poisonous air,” John Tanner, a councilor in Oxford, UK, told CNBC. “Everyone needs to do their bit — from national government and local authorities to businesses and residents — to end this public health emergency.”

Hurricane Babette reached the northeastern United States today and caused death and destruction everywhere. The killer storm carried winds of 135 miles per hour. The high winds and heavy rains, together with the force of the Atlantic Ocean, created extremely dangerous waves. It is not yet known how many people died or were hurt in this storm, but it is said that the numbers will be very high. The damage to homes, business and crops will run into billions of dollars. Now that the storm is over, the long, slow rebuilding will begin.
With the arrival of the tornado season, the National Weather Service is again telling people how to protect themselves from these deadly storms. The winds from tornadoes are the most violent winds on earth. They can blow up to 400 miles per hour. A tornado looks like a funnel(漏斗). It is also very loud. It may sound like a train coming at you. In fact, the winds from a tornado can pick up a train and throw it around. If a tornado is seen in your area, it is very important that you protect yourself. A basement (地下室) is the safest place to go. Try to wait under a table in the basement. If your building does not have a basement, stay on the ground floor but lie flat under a bed or table. Stay away from windows. If you are outside or in your car, try to find a narrow place to lie down in.
As the area tries to deal with the worst flood of the century, there are many heartwarming stories of people helping other people. From all over the world people have sent food and clothes to help the thousands who have had to leave their homes. Many volunteers have come to help to make sandbags and use them to build walls against the overflowing river. While the result of this disaster will be terrible for many, it is beautiful to see people coming together to help others and save lives, and property (财产).
