A mother goat is able to pick out her own baby from its voice alone by the time the kid is just five days old.
Researchers from University of London played kids'bleats to female goats and studied their responses. They were surprised to find that the animals were able to pick out their own kids' voices.
“A mother and kid rely a lot on smell to recognise one another and, in the wild, during the first week of their lives, the animals hide in grass and don't call much. It's a strategy they use to avoid enemies,” Dr Elodie Briefer, who led the research, explained to BBC News.“The mothers call to the kids when they want them to come and feed, so we expected that kids would recognise the mothers' voices.”
In fact this was the case for deer, which also use this “hiding” strategy, although they do not belong to the same family of species as goats.
She and her team recorded and played back young kids' calls to the female goats and recorded their responses.
She explained, “Even when the calls came from kids that were five to six days old, we could see the mothers responding more to the voices of their own babies.” Hearing the voice of their own kids, the females would look towards the speaker that the sound was coming from, moving around and calling in response.
The scientists say that understanding how goats behave and communicate is very important.“This helps us understand just how smart these animals are,” said Dr Briefer.“Farmers might be able to change their way to raise goats considering this natural behaviour.”
1.What does the underlined word “bleats” means
A.Habits. B.Voices.

2.How does a goat protect itself during the first week of its life
A.Sending a strange smell.
B.Running away quickly.
C.Making strange sound.
D.Staying in the grass.
根据第三段中的“ ...during the first week of their lives, the animals hide in grass and don't call much.”
3.In the experiment, what does a mother goat do when hearing her kids' voice
A.Making voice in response.
B.Jumping over and over.
C.Hiding herself somewhere.
D.Behaving just as usual.
根据倒数第二段中的“Hearing the voice of their own kids, the females would look towards the speaker that the sound was coming from, moving around and calling in response.”

B
Animals do some pretty strange things. Giraffes clean their eyes and ears with their tongues. Snakes see through their eyelids (眼睑)... But some strange animal tales are not true.
Myth (谬论) One:Ostriches (鸵鸟) bury their heads in the sand when they're scared.
This is completely wrong! The ostrich is the largest living bird, but its head is pretty small. If you see ostriches picking at the ground from a distance, it may look like their heads are buried in the ground.
Ostriches don't bury their heads in the sand — they wouldn't be able to breathe! But they do dig holes in the dirt to use as nests for their eggs. Several times a day, a bird puts its head in the hole and turns the eggs. So it really does look like the birds are burying their heads in the sand!
Myth Two: Mother birds will refuse to accept their babies if they've been touched by humans.
Sometimes, kind hearted humans who find a baby bird on the ground may want to return it to the nest. But the bird is probably learning to fly and shouldn't be disturbed. The tale may have been invented to keep people from handling young birds.
Most birds have a poorly developed sense of smell; they won't notice a human smell. One exception (例外) is vultures (秃鹫), who look for dead animals for dinner, but you wouldn't want to mess with a vulture anyway!
Myth Three: Penguins fall over backwards when they look up at airplanes.
It is said that British pilots saw penguins fall over backwards like dominoes (多米诺骨牌) when they looked up at the sky.
The experiment found that penguins are perfectly capable of maintaining their balance, even if they are watching airplanes. But the reality isn't funny, as low flying aircraft can cause penguins to panic and leave their nests.
5.What can we learn about ostriches
A.They don't have their own nests.
B.They dig holes in the dirt for their eggs.
C.They are the birds with the smallest heads.
D.If they are frightened, they will bury their heads in the sand.
由Myth One中第三段“But they do dig holes in the dirt to use as nests for their eggs.”
6.What can we learn from Myth Two
A.Most people think the vulture is a lovely bird.
B.Birds prefer to look for dead animals for food.
C.All birds have a strong sense of smell, except for vultures.
D.It might have been invented to keep people from disturbing young birds.
由Myth Two 中第二段最后一句话可知D项正确;由Myth Two中第三段最后一句话“...but you wouldn't want to mess with a vulture anyway!”
7.Which of the following events is TRUE
A.Snakes see through their eyeballs.
B.Giraffes clean their eyes and ears with their tongues.
C.Penguins fall over backwards when they look up at airplanes.
D.Mother birds will refuse to accept their babies if they have been touched by humans.
由文章开头第二句话可知B项正确;由第一段“Snakes see through their eyelids (眼睑)”可知A项错误;由Myth Two和Myth Three可知C、D项错误。
8.Where may this text have been taken from
A.A science magazine. B.A travel magazine.
C.A health magazine. D.A geography magazine.

Do you ever wonder why we yawn (打呵欠) Do you always yawn when you see other people yawn A new study from Nottingham University in the UK has done research on this.
Researchers found that yawning is contagious (有传染性的).It is a powerful and unstoppable reaction.People automatically want to yawn when they see other people yawning. The researchers said people actually yawn more when they try to stop yawning. The researchers also found that some people have a much stronger urge to yawn than other people.Lead researcher Professor Stephen Jackson said that even reading about yawning could be enough to make people yawn.He said, “When I teach about yawning, I can get most of the students yawning, which doesn't happen for my other lectures.” You might even want to yawn right now.
The researchers studied the reactions and brain activities of 36 adult volunteers. The volunteers looked at videos of other people yawning. They then had two choices — either to stop themselves yawning or to allow themselves to do so.The volunteers were videoed as they yawned or tried not to yawn. The researchers also monitored the brain activities of the volunteers and checked how strong their feeling to want to yawn was.
“There are many theories for why we yawn (e.g., lack of oxygen, to cool the brain, because we are tired, etc.), but the evidence for these is lacking.I still think that much more research is required to understand the function and biology of yawning,” said Jackson.
Jackson said understanding more about yawning will help to treat conditions such as dementia (痴呆) and epilepsy (癫痫).He said, “We are looking for potential non drug, personalized treatments that might be effective in changing imbalances in the brain.”

Petra is the most well known and beautiful site in Jordan that is about 262 km south of Amman, and 133 km north of Aqaba. The Dead Sea is 80 kilometers north of it. It was the legacy from the Nabataeans, who settled in the southwest of Jordan a lot more than 2,000 years back. Because of its excellent culture, buildings and many water channels, Petra has become a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World that attracts visitors all over the world.
To get there, you must pass through a kilometer long, cool, dark and narrow gorge (峡谷) whose two high sides keep the sunlight out. Suddenly the gorge opens right into a natural square covered with Petra's most well known monuments (遗址), which glow in the bright sun.The old town shows the visitors its beautiful look. It leads people to think about the creativity of the Nabataeans who made Petra as their capital.
Petra flourished for more than 400 years at about the time of Rome until it had been occupied through the Roman legions in 106 AD. Petra has 800 monuments, including buildings, tombs, baths, halls, temples, and streets, which were mostly carved in the pretty sandstone.
Petra sights are in their finest at the beginning of morning and late afternoon. Once the sun warms the colorful stones, you will see the greatness of Petra since it was seen first when discovered in 1812 after being lost through the 16th century for nearly 300 years!

It is sometimes said that strange flying objects have been seen high up in the sky. People call these strange objects Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs). These UFOs caused a lot of interest. Some of the reports about them are difficult to believe. Some have been explained in scientific ways. Others have never been explained. Here is an account of UFOs from a report.
Dennis Burdens, who wrote an article, tells us that he once saw a UFO himself. He was having dinner one night with a friend near Tripoli, Libya, and after dinner the two men walked across a yard to his room to look at some papers. Burdens noticed that the moon looked strange that night.
“It wasn't the moon,” was the reply.
They watched the light and saw that it was moving. It seemed to be an object rather like a big plate. In some ways it looked like smoke with a light on it, but it wasn't smoke because it didn't change its shape. It was moving in a regular way. That is to say, it didn't go suddenly faster or more slowly, and it didn't go higher or lower. So the two men decided that there must be men in it.
After that, Burdens said that he felt eyes looking at him. He was being watched in the darkness.
When it was nearer, they noticed that the bottom parts were brighter than the top. The bottom was yellow and the top red. Then the object suddenly turned away and left Libya, moving very fast.
On a later day Burdens talked to other people about it, and he found some who had seen it. They all described it in the same way. Could they all be mistaken

The sea has always interested man. From it he can get food, minerals, and treasure. __1__ But he could not go far beneath its surface.
__2__ However, he is not a fish. He must breathe air, so he can't stay under the water's surface for any length of time. To explore deep water, man faces even more dangers and problems.
A diver who wants to stay under water for more than a few minutes must breathe air or a special mixture of gases. __3__ He can carry a tank of air on his back and breathe through a nose and a mouthpiece. Water weighs 800 times as much as air. Tons of water pushes against a diver deep in the sea. __4__
When a diver is under great pressure, his blood takes in some of the gases he breathes. As he rises to surface, the water pressure becomes less.
