When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him.His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40 year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail.Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mental health scores with their boyhood activity scores.Points were awarded for part time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working — at any age — is important.Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”

The Hanging Gardens were one of Babylon's greatest attractions, according to Greek historians. Yet it is still a great secret of how they were built such a long time ago.
They were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, yet no one knows for sure whether they existed. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were a wonder to look at, according to anyone who saw them and wrote about them. Greek writers were certainly impressed by them. Yet where were they, and why were they built
Historians are fairly certain that they know the answer to the first question: Where were they Recent excavations (发掘) of the ancient city of Babylon have showed us a likely possibility that the Gardens weren't really hanging but were on high rooftops, giving the wrong idea of hanging in the sky. It has been suggested that the plants that filled the rooftop garden had vined (长成藤蔓) so long that they covered the building walls, giving the impression that the plants hung in the middle of the air. In fact, the name comes from a misapprehension of the Greek word “kremastos” or the Latin word “pensilis”, which means not just “hanging”, but “overhanging” as in the case of a terrace (平台).
One of the most common mysteries has been how the plants were watered. Babylon, after all, is in the middle of a desert. Excavations in recent years have clearly explained this question. Archaeologists (考古学家) now think that a kind of watering system was designed, which is like our modern conveyor belt (传送带). No such thing has been found, of course, but the evidence that has been found fits in with this guess.

Climate change will force exhausted birds migrating (迁徙) to Europe from Africa to travel further, according to a new study.
The annual voyage of some species, which fly north in search of food and suitable habitats, could increase by as much as 400 kilometres, the research found. “Marathon migrations for some birds are set to become even longer,” said Stephen Willis, a professor at Durham University in Britain and the main architect of the study. “This is bad news for birds like the Whitethroat, a common farmland bird. The added distance is a great threat. As temperatures rise and habitats change, birds will face their biggest challenge since the Pleistocene era, which ended 11,000 years ago,” he said in a statement.
About 500 million birds migrate each year from Africa, some weighing as little as nine grams. To complete a voyage that can be thousands of kilometres long, birds have to fatten themselves up to twice their normal weight. Some even shrink (收缩) their internal organs (内脏) to become more fuel efficient, so any additional distance may be dangerous.
The study, which is published in a journal, finds that from 2071 to 2100, 9 out of 17 species examined are going to face longer migrations, particularly birds that cross the Sahara Desert. Some birds traverse the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea in one go, while others have a break in northern Africa before crossing. Many fly at night, when temperatures are cooler.
A few birds — such as the Blackcap — have started to adapt by spending winters in Britain, but such behaviour is rare, the study says. The study predicts that the migration distance of the Orphean Warbler will jump from 2,700 kilometres to between 3,050 and 3,350 kilometres, with even longer increases for the Subalpine and Barred Warblers.
5.Some birds migrate to Europe from Africa to ________.

7.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage
A.About 500 million birds migrate each year from Africa.
B.9 out of 17 bird species examined will face longer migrations in the next decade.

8.The underlined word “traverse” in the fourth paragraph probably means “________”.
A.live in B.leave for

Lao Zi, also Li Dan by name, lived in late Spring and Autumn Period. He was from the state of Chu. He was a knowledgeable person that even the great Confucius had once consulted (咨询) him on things that he couldn't understand as a young man. Lao Zi wrote the book Dao De Jing, the classic for Daoism.
“Dao” is the core (核心) of Lao Zi's philosophy. “Dao” in its original meaning, is a road that leads to all directions. Lao Zi gave a new meaning to it. By the word Dao, he means it is the basic element (元素,成分) or root that can give birth to all things, and at the same time, it is independent of all other things.
Lao Zi believed that things are established in their antithetical (对立的) relationship. We can see the positive (积极的) side of the things and at the same time, we should also see the negative (消极的) side of them. When the opposite side develops to the extreme, it will have to turn to the other side. When things reach their prime (鼎盛时期), they have to decline.
He also believed that quantity changes could lead to quality changes. For example, a small seed could grow into a tall tree. He encouraged people that continued efforts will eventually bring about success.
Lao Zi was against wars and over taxation (征税) from the ruling class. His Utopia (理想国) is: a small state with a small population. Everything would be so convenient that people could go about their life without the need for carriages and boats. People eat well and dress finely. Two states could be very near that each could hear the noise from the other side, but never in their life should they have the necessity of exchange with each other. There's not even the need for writings.
Lao Zi's philosophy later had a great influence on later philosophers.

1.A.As B.Like

2.A.deeds B.discoveries
C.characters D.inventions
解析:选D 根据后面一句话中的invention可知此处为inventions。
3.A.many B.few

6.A.think B.trust

Ⅳ.阅读理解
My first visit to Angkor Wat was in 1980. The country had been at war for many years and the_temple_was_deserted and falling into pieces. Plants were growing out of the roofs, and trees were growing in the courtyards.
Today, the temple is the scene of a busy repair programme. A team of 15 Indian experts are organizing a workforce of 400 Cambodians; most of them are women, who are cleaning, repairing and rebuilding parts of this temple.
As I walked through the courtyards, I noticed the Cambodian women devote hours to cleaning carefully a tiny area of stone. Boards are laid down to protect the precious painted stones while the repair work is going on. There are very few machines and little heavy equipment. Workers carry building materials in buckets at the end of long poles. Piles of stones lie in a corner of the courtyard, waiting to be replaced.
The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists. It is a very slow task. First they clean the stones with brushes using buckets of a weak chemical. Then gaps between the stones are filled in. Finally another material is painted onto the stones which will protect them from water forever.
Work starts every day at 7 am and goes on until late afternoon six days a week, with a break at midday.
Evening is the best time to visit the temple, after the tour groups have left. As the sun sinks lower, shadows spread across the courtyard. After sunset, the sky turns pink. The grey stone towers take on a golden colour before turning pink. Nowhere else in the world can there be such a quiet, beautiful place.
1.This passage mainly tells ________.
A.the poor look of the temple Angkor Wat in 1980
B.the history of the temple Angkor Wat
C.the repair work being done to the temple Angkor Wat
D.the difficulty in the repair work
解析:选C 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了正在对吴哥窟进行的维修工作。所以选C。
2.According to the author, which of the following plays the LEAST important role in the repair work
A.The women workers.
B.The Indian workers.
C.Machines.
D.Skilled workers.
解析:选C 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“A team of 15 Indian experts are organizing a workforce of 400 Cambodians; most of them are women, who are cleaning, repairing and rebuilding parts of this temple.”和第四段中的“The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists.”可以看出A、B、D在维修工作中的作用;根据第三段中的“There are very few machines and little heavy equipment.”可知机械作用不大,所以选C。
3.The underlined sentence “the temple was deserted” possibly means that ________.
A.there was no one in the temple and it was in a poor state
B.the temple was built on desert and nobody noticed it
C.the temple was very old with a long history
D.the temple was repaired by the Cambodians; most of them are women
解析:选A 句意理解题。前文信息“The country had been at war for many years”点明国家经历了多年的战乱,后面出现“falling into pieces (崩裂)”以及“Plants were growing out of the roofs, and trees were growing in the courtyards. (屋顶杂草丛生,庭院树木遍布)”的状况,所以A项“寺庙无人在,状况破败不堪”符合文意,此处desert表示“舍弃,离弃”的意思。
4.Which work needs a lot of time
A.To get rid of certain types of plants.
B.To carry the building materials.
C.To replace the stones.
D.To clean the stones.
解析:选D 推理判断题。第四段前两句“The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists. It is a very slow task.”表明清理石头的工作很慢。后文介绍了该项工作的三个步骤,所以选D。

How to become a role model
A role model is someone who a person admires, respects and wishes to imitate. Here is how to be a role model.
__1__ If you see something you don't agree with, don't be afraid to stand up and say something. Others will take note of what you've done and remember it. By standing up for your beliefs, you're encouraging others to do the same.
Help other people in a variety of ways. For example, sign up for a program such as Big Brothers or help some new kids around your school. Many people would like to have someone to look up to, but simply don't. __2__
Act like yourself, not someone you're not. Many people think a role model is someone famous and outstanding. __3__ By being helpful, kind and most importantly, yourself, people will start to admire and look up to you.
__4__ Role models aren't admired because of their greatness, but rather the determination it takes to get there. Even if you're not the best, people will take notice of your hard work and devotion.
Think of who your role models are and the reason for that. __5__ For example, if your role model is a singer who has songs aiming at human rights, volunteering at a charity may achieve the same outcome. Others will take note of this behavior and begin to look up to you.
A.Work hard in everything that you do.
B.Stand up for the things in which you believe.
C.As a role model, you have to take your social responsibilities.
D.You can change this by becoming a helpful person in their life.
E.However, you don't have to be extraordinary to become a role model.
F.Analyze the reason you look up to someone and then imitate that behavior.
G.For example, if you're watching a younger kid being badly treated, help him out.
