Teaching steps:
Step1. Warm-up (4’ )
1. Greet with students.
2. Listen to a song.
Step2. Revision (2’ )
Revise what happened to Mary.
Step3 Pre-reading (4’ )
Show some pictures to help students know about
the two events they will read.
Step4. Reading (15’ )
1. Skim and answer the following two questions:
⑴Which two events does the writer mention
⑵.How did the writer end up missing
2. Read for details
⑴. Read the first paragraph and answer the following
questions:
1 What time did the writer arrive at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001
2 What did the write decide to do first
3 3.How far away was the office place from his office
⑵. Read the second paragraph and number the following sentences in the correct order.
A. I woke up at 10:00 a.m. on February 21, 2011
and realized that my alarm had never gone off.
B. By the time I got to the airport, my plane to
New Zealand had already taken off.
C. The next morning, I heard about the earthquake
in New Zealand the day before.
D. The other planes were full of so I had to wait
till the next day.
E. I jumped out of bed and went straight to the airport.

1. Compare two events and fill the blanks.
2. Find out the key words and finish 3b.
3. Encourage students to retell the stories according the
key words.
Step6. Summary (3’ )
1. Summarize the key words and past perfect tense.
2. Remind students to be careful in life and encourage them to face and solve the unexpected bravely.
