Unit 1 单元质量检测(一)
Ⅰ.阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
My mother sat in silence, shocked by my guided tour of websites of adventurous families, who bike around the world for charity, sail the globe in search of their roots or see the world through children's eyes.We found many people on boats, bikes and foot, showing that adventure doesn't have to die when a new life is created. As one of my friends says,‘This is your one and only chance to explore the world with your children as they are now.’
‘Mum,’I began awkwardly.‘We're going to travel across New Zealand. Two bikes, two trailers (拖车), two toddlers (学步的孩子) and 2,000 miles.’
‘Two thousand nappies (纸尿裤) more like.’
My mother wasn't the only one to raise objections. While friends and family were impressed by our bravery, they were horrified at what it would involve.‘No nursery, no babysitters, no bath time, no peace, no escape ...’And that was before we mentioned the real difficulty: pulling 50 kg of trailer, toddler and baggage. And of course the nappies.
‘Is there anything I can say to put you off?’ my mother asked.
‘No, Mum,’I replied firmly.
‘Well, we'll see about that.’
The challenge of dealing with my mother's phone call about potential disasters is as great as anything we may have to face on the road.Meanwhile, we rush to toilet train both children to avoid the nappy carrying.Among the voices of doubt and disapproval, I still sometimes wonder if we are mad, but know we aren't mad alone. We have now been in communication with many of the families I showed my mother on the web.And we can feel our own voice getting stronger and more confident with their encouragement, advice and support.
Now we know there are so many families out there adventuring, we're already developing ideas for a world tour to meet some of these families and talk with them about their experiences and spread the word about the possibilities for independent family adventure. As a friend of ours said, ‘The only limit is the parents' imagination.’We intend to let ours run wild.

With the fast development of today's world, I have to say that for the first time I'm beginning to feel my age. When I was a boy, being online meant helping my Mom hang up my jeans on the clothes line behind our house and Twitter was what you heard from the birds in the trees. There was no Facebook although I often had my face in a book and a mouse was something our cat chased. Then a computer was that strange thing with the blinking (闪烁的) lights I saw on the science fiction television shows.
These days I have learned how to work a desktop computer and I'm grateful every day that I took a typing class in high school.Yet, it seems like there is always a message on my screen asking me to update (更新) the software but I'm concerned that as soon as I learn the new system it will already be out of date.My daughter can work her smart phone with good skills.Whenever I need the answer to something fast I ask her and then she will ask her phone. However, I'm thankful that she turns it off from time to time because every day I can see teenagers with their heads always down to their phones while life passes them by.
I'm not worried about where this technological trip is taking us, though.I know that all roads lead us to the same place, the paradise (天堂).Our smartphones and social media won't be making the trip with us because the only things we can take with us are what we have learned and the love we have shared. The only computer we will be carrying into the next life is the software of our spirits.
Don't give your life over to technology then.Instead use technology to help you share your love and pass on your joy and use it to help others and make this world a better place. And then after you are done turn it off.
5.From the first paragraph, we can infer that ________.

B.are happier than the author when he was a teenager
C.are very concerned about the new system out of date
D.know much about turning their phones off from time to time

International Women's Day takes place every year on 8 March to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world. It started with a protest (抗议) that took place in New York City in 1908 where women went out onto the streets to demand (要求) the right to vote, shorter working hours and better pay.Since then it has taken many forms and today it's a global event. In some countries, March 8 is an official holiday and in other countries it's an official holiday but only for women.

A lot of special events take place in towns and cities all over the UK to celebrate International Women's Day.They are designed to celebrate the role of women in society and to make us think about the progress that has been made, but also about the changes that still need to take place to ensure the world is a fair and equal place for all its citizens.
Can you imagine a future when there's no need at all to have an International Women's Day or there is total equality for men and women Hmmm ...something to think about but perhaps in your lifetime this could happen!?
8.Why did women organize a protest in 1908

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
There was once a small community of people who lived in a remote valley surrounded by huge mountains. Although the mountains protected the township from the severe weather common to the area, they also prevented the residents from accessing fertile fields located nearby.
One day, a large earthquake hit the area, and it was discovered that a path had opened up leading to those rich_fields. Everyone rushed to the area, hoping to claim the new land as their own.
Sensing a great opportunity for himself in the growing confusion as to ownership of these new lands, the city mayor,_a wealthy and cunning man, had a plan. Through clever persuasion he convinced the town council that since these valleys now represented the most fertile land in the area, it only made sense that the_richest_family should own them. After all, the mayor reasoned, surely the wisest among them would know the best way to divide up the new wealth.
The town council agreed to the mayor's proposal. The mayor knew quite well his own secret superior financial position, but he also knew that the residents would never take him just on his word. So he had a huge set of scales constructed in the town center, and then sent invitations to those people who wished to compete for the land. They were instructed to bring all their riches and valuable possessions to the town center the next morning for a friendly competition to determine who was the wealthiest.
As the next day dawned, thirty families lined up at the scales, eagerly taking the start of the competition. Their carts filled with gold and silver coins, precious gems, and various other treasures. One by one, the townspeople poured their belongings on to one side of the giant scales. And one by one, weighing in against the mayor's riches, they saw their fortunes fail to change_the_scales in their favor.
As the competition was about to close, with his confidence and conceit reaching their peak, the mayor's glance happened to fall upon the “town fool” standing nearby.

B.has already made a detailed plan for a world tour
C.is concerned that her imagination may cause problems
D.hopes to meet other families and share their experiences

A.the author's family was poor
B.the names in the past mean different things nowadays
C.there were many strange things in the author's childhood
D.the author had a sweet dream for the future
6.Which of the following is TRUE, according to the passage
A.The author once was a science teacher in school.
B.The author is willing to update all kinds of software.
C.The author learned typing when he was a high school student.

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)

Paragraph 1:
This man was a calm fellow, relatively short, and well liked by the people who took the time to know him. With an evil grin the mayor called out, “Hey, Joseph, don't you want to be in the competition?” “Uh ...no,” replied Joseph quietly.“Oh come on, Joseph, come on.Bring your things up — come on, what have you got?” “Nothing, really,” replied Joseph.
paragraph 2:
“Well then, you get on the scale,” the mayor laughed.“Come on, you get up there and we'll see how far you change_the_scales!” And with this the crowd began to call upon Joseph to accept the challenge. So Joseph walked over and stepped on to the scales. The people gasped at what happened next.Joseph outweighed the mayor's riches! The townspeople looked on in complete disbelief, stunned into silence by what they saw.And Joseph's close friend said, “The real wealth of a man is his character.”
