What Makes a Soccer Player Great
Soccer is played by millions of people all over the world, but there have been only a few players who were truly great. How did these players get that way — was it through training and practice, or are great players
“born not made”? First, these players came from places that have had famous stars in the past — players that a young boy can look up to (敬仰) and try to imitate. In the history of soccer, only six countries have ever won the World Cup — three from South America and three from Europe. There has never been a national team — or a really great player — from North America or from Asia. Secondly, these players all had years of practice in the game. Alfredo Di Stefano was the son of a soccer player, as was Pele. Most players began playing the game at the age of three or four.
Finally, many great players come from the same kind of neighbourhood — a poor, crowded area where a boy's dream is not to be a doctor, lawyer or businessman, but to become a rich, famous athlete or entertainer. For example, Liverpool, which produced the Beatles, had one of the best English soccer teams in recent years. Pele practised in the street with a “ball” made of rags. And George Best learned the tricks that made him famous by bouncing the ball off a wall in the slums (贫民区) of Belfast.
All great players have a lot in common, but that doesn't explain why they are great. Hundreds of boys played in those Brazilian streets, but only one became Pele. The greatest players are born with some unique quality that sets them apart from all the others.

Anger is not wrong.I know this statement seems shocking and challenges the wildly popular “Positive Thinking” movement, which encourages us to “be full of positive energy” and “let go of our anger”.However, the truth is that anger is just an emotion, and emotions are neither right nor wrong. We do not consciously choose them.We do, on the other hand, choose how we express our emotions and there are definitely right and wrong means of expression.
The reason we're often urged to “keep_a_lid_on” our anger is that few people ever learn proper and positive ways to express anger.Instead, we are taught that “anger is wrong”and “you should keep your anger inside”.But these messages don't change the fact that, for most of us, anger exists.
Many popular “Positive Thinking” programmes assume that success comes from “controlling our emotions”and that this can be done by simply repeating positive statements.Interestingly, these positive slogans often include a lot of negativity. “Only losers complain!I am a winner!” is one popular saying. The belief that those who disagree with us are losers is actually quite negative and is often used as an excuse for rude language and personal attacks.
When it comes to dealing with negative situations in our daily lives, the ability to reasonably express anger or disagreement is an important skill. But we must use balanced and non violent methods to express our dissatisfaction.Frustration at unfair policies or treatment can certainly cause anger, but our anger can never be an excuse for abusing family members, damaging schools, attacking doctors or most seriously, engaging in terrorism.
Instead of pretending that anger doesn't exist, we should start teaching appropriate means of dealing with anger. When we experience angry feelings in ourselves or others, what we should “let go of ” is the silly idea that we can remove anger with just a few sweet words.Instead, we should find reasonable solutions to the causes of those angry feelings. We need to accept anger as a natural emotion but stop using it as an excuse for violent and destructive behaviour.Anger isn't wrong, but failure to deal with it appropriately is.

For a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers (慢跑者). They were there all the time: early mornings, noons, and evenings. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle aged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “You'll feel great.”
Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army, I'm not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for forty five minutes isn't my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say,“I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain And that wasn't just the first week; it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog
I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will. I'm walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.
语篇解读:不知从何时起,慢跑已经悄然成为一种时尚,然而,并不是每个人都适合做这种运动。两个月的慢跑锻炼让作者深受其害、苦不堪言,由此他永远告别了这种痛苦而又枯燥的运动。
1.From the first paragraph, we learn that in the writer's neighborhood ________.
A.jogging became very popular
B.people jogged only during the daytime
C.Alex organized an army of joggers
D.jogging provided a chance to get together

2.The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 most probably refers to ________.
A.heart attacks
B.back problems
C.famous joggers
D.physical weaknesses

3.Why did the writer give up jogging two months later
A.He disliked doing exercise outside.
B.He found it neither healthy nor interesting.
C.He was afraid of having a heart attack.

4.From the writer's experience, we can conclude that
________.
A.not everyone enjoys jogging
B.he is the only person who hates jogging
C.nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D.jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport

Competition in the Olympics should be between athletes who use their own strength (力量) or speed. If some athletes don't follow the rules, it ruins the fun for everyone connected with the game. It also gives an extremely unfair advantage to the athlete using the drug.
—Jim from Atlanta
Drug use among top athletes has long been a problem. Without drug testing, the Olympics would be about who uses the most drugs, not who trains the hardest and has the most athletic skills. Also drugs hurt people and they could even kill people.
—David from Houston
Why should athletes be allowed to compete when it's not really them who are actually competing It's the drugs that do all the work. Athletes who use drugs are_like_runners_with_skates. It's cheating and should not be allowed. It's unfair to other competitors who don't use drugs.
—Bruce from Chicago
Most sports athletes are held to a standard of being drug free. Olympians should not be held any differently. They take part in highly competitive sports for their country and win medals for it. Testing the athletes for drugs must be done in every country and every sport. No drug testing would be unfair to people who don't use drugs.
—Sam from Los Angeles
Although popular opinion is against athletes' using drugs, I believe they do help make the Olympic sports more wonderful. I enjoy seeing human beings achieving things that couldn't be done with normal conditioning. I enjoy seeing stronger, faster and longer performances with the help of drugs.
—Jack from New York
语篇解读:本文是议论文。文章主要讨论了奥运会选手是否应该接受兴奋剂检测。
5.What does David think of drug use in the Olympics
A.It's more common in top athletes than others.
B.It's a difficult problem to deal with.

D.It's bad for athletes' health.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“Also drugs hurt people and they could even kill people.”可知,David认为使用违禁药品对健康有害。
6.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggests that________.
A.using drugs is the same as cheating
B.drugs help athletes reach greater speeds
C.runners should not be allowed to use drugs
D.using drugs can not test athletes' real ability
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据该句的字面意思“使用药品的运动员就好比穿着溜冰鞋赛跑”以及该句后面的“It's cheating and should not be allowed.”可知,画线句子的真正含义是:使用药品和作弊没什么两样。
7.Both Jim and Sam mentioned________.
A.the popularity of the Olympics
B.the fairness of the Olympics
C.the rules of the Olympics
D.the fun of the Olympics

8.The text is mainly written to ________.

Cheerleading (拉拉队) dates back to the late 19th century, when crowds began to chant and yell to encourage their teams. Credit for the first organized cheer was given to a University of Minnesota student named Johnny Campbell, who got the students to shout “Rah, rah, rah! Sku u mar, Hoo rah! Hoo rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn e so ta!” for their football team in the 1898 season. Soon after, a yell leader group of six male students was organized, a practice that became popular at numerous other universities.
For the first few decades of its history cheerleading was an all male activity, but by the 1920s, women began to take part in the activity as well. Nowadays more than 90% of America's cheerleading participants are female.
In 1948, Lawrence Herkimer, a former Southern Methodist University cheerleader formed the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA). Herkimer is credited with creating many of cheerleading's fundamental moves.
Cheerleading remained in its supporting role until the 1980s, when cheerleading competitions, organized by the National Cheerleaders Association and other groups, started to grow in popularity. For the first time, teams got off the sidelines and took centre stage, competing with teams from all over the U.S.
Today cheerleaders can be found at almost any kind of sporting event, including the Olympics and the Cricket World Cup. The sport has spread from the U. S. to many other countries, like Mexico.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
During the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, many world records were broken. They fell in swimming, cycling, running and a number of other sports. How do athletes continue to get better, jump longer, run or swim faster Although scientists say that athletes have reached their limits (极限), records continue to fall. In almost every sport athletes have become better since the Olympic movement began.
One reason is that more and more people than ever before have access to sports and exercise. They start at an earlier age and can compete longer in their sports. In schools more and more natural talents can be discovered. Another reason is that athletes can train harder and, as professionals, concentrate (专心) wholly on their sports instead of rushing to a training session after their day job. As medicine improves, athletes can stay in competition for a longer time and overcome injuries faster. Technology has also helped improve scores and equipment is getting better. One of the most important factors, however, is the human mind. It lies in our nature to be better and faster than someone else. The will to break a barrier (障碍) can release great power in your body.
So, where are the limits Some years ago, nobody thought a person could run under 10 seconds in the 100 meter dash. But the record was broken at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. At the moment Usain Bolt is the fastest man on earth at 9.58 seconds. Scientists say that 9.48 may be the absolute (绝对的) limit for running such a distance, but, who knows, maybe some runner will one day run under 9 seconds.
