Surfing the Internet for fun will make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.
The University of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons at work are about 9 percent more productive (富有成效的) than those who do not. Study author Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times helps increase an employee's attention.”
“People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university's website. “Having a short break, such as a quick surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher total Internet attention for a day's work, and as a result, increases productivity,” he said.
According to the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most popular surfing activities are searching for information about products, reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees from watching videos, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That's not always a good idea.”
However, Coker said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a lower productivity than those without.” he said.
1.What does the University of Melbourne study mainly show
A.People who surf the Internet are good employees.

A.Those who never surf the Internet have the lowest productivity.

The Internet is an amazing tool, especially for children looking to learn. But it also has a dark side. Parents have to ask themselves, “When is the right time to let my child go online?”
This is a far bigger problem than it used to be. Now we live in a time when a family could have more than one computer. It is common for children to have their own computer or laptop. There are also phones and tablets (平板电脑) to think of.
Parents do have difficulty in acting correctly. On the one hand it would be foolish to keep children from the Internet as they can learn a lot from it. But on the other hand, parents shouldn't let children do whatever they like on the Internet. The problem is that everybody is busy nowadays, and this is certainly true for parents. How many people with children have the time to sit down with their kids when they do their homework online Some do, but more are just not able to.
So at what age should children be allowed to use the Internet According to a survey, the average age at which parents said they were happy for independent (独立的) Internet use is a slightly surprising eight years old.
As a non parent, I do find it hard to agree. I always believe that education, as ever, is the key to success. However, I think children as young as eight may face a lot of dangers when they use the Internet without parents being around. So I think schools and parents have a responsibility to teach children not only how to use the Internet, but also how to do so safely.
4.In Para. 2 the author wants to show that today's children ________.
A.can easily go on the Internet
B.are big problems for their parents

D.Most parents can't be around when their kids use the Internet.
6.The author considers the result of the survey ________.
A.interesting B.meaningless
C.unacceptable D.untrue
7.What can be used as the best title for the passage

Many people in the UK have poor mathematical skills. Dr.Richard Pike, a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, said that mathematics questions in entrance tests to British universities were much too simple.
About two thirds of British universities now offer special courses in mathematics to new students. The courses are necessary because new students do not know enough mathematics when they leave high school. A university teacher said that there was a serious risk that there would not be enough scientists and engineers coming out of British universities in the future.
New university students are bad at mathematics. So are a lot of other people in Britain. A survey found that 7 million people in England were bad at mathematics. It is necessary to help people improve their math skills, which are important in lots of ways.
One problem is that many students do not want to study math because they think it is a difficult subject. They want to have high grades in their A levels. High A level grades are necessary in order to go to university. This is one reason why students do not choose to study mathematics at A level. Sometimes schools also prefer students to study easier subjects instead of mathematics. A school will have a better reputation if more students pass A level exams.
Another problem is that some educated people think mathematics is not important. They think it is not a creative subject. This way of thinking is very dangerous. When people do not understand mathematics, they are not able to make proper judgments about important questions. Nowadays, a lot of people use the Internet to find the answers to scientific questions. But they don't understand science, they cannot judge the value of the information which they find. People will become very ignorant if they don't study mathematics and science.
8.What is the text mainly about
A.Mathematics problems in the UK.
B.Simple exams for British students.
C.Unscientific course structure in the UK.
D.Problems for British high school students.
9.Many universities in Britain offer math courses because ________.
A.students hope to learn more about mathematic skills
B.students' parents want them to continue math study
C.students do not learn enough mathematics in high school
D.students are expected to become scientists or engineers
10.What can we infer about people who are bad at mathematics
A.They can't make any achievements in some creative work.
B.They can't make correct decisions on some important issues.
C.They can properly use the Internet to look for information.
D.They can gain the respect of students who are bad at math.

I hit the back window of a new car with a hammer. In a flash I was in. I started the car, just like my older brother had taught me. I was 12 then. It seems crazy now. Today, everyone knows me as Donald Driver, a_famous_football_player. I've dedicated (致力于,献身于) my life after football to helping disadvantaged kids around the country.
Mom would have killed me if she'd known what I was up to. My dad had gone to prison while she was pregnant with me. Mom wanted a_better_life for me, my two brothers and two sisters. She worked long hours to support us. But she often fell behind on rent and then we'd have to move. Trouble really started when we moved next door to a man named J. R. Mom trusted him to care us while she was at work, and he did. What Mom didn't know was that J. R. and his friends were dealing drugs.
My older brother Moses and I served as lookouts (放哨人,望风者). We knew it was wrong, but the money was too good — D|S100 a night. We broke it into smaller_bills,_and regularly slipped some into Mom's purse. Then Moses discovered we could bring in even more cash by stealing cars. We practiced giving the_same_smile,_hug and kiss for my mom when we came home, no matter what we'd done on the streets.
Now, though, I was about to get caught. The_police got closer. I turned into a back alley. Suddenly, up ahead, a car backed out of a driveway. I saw a little old lady sitting in the driver's seat. But it was too late. I stopped and jumped out to see if the old lady was damaged. The woman, Evelyn_Johnson,_looked angry, but unhurt. “Go sit in my house right now,” she said. It was the tone of voice that no kid can disobey. The police arrived and began to question the old woman.
“The man who did this ran that way,” she said, pointing down the alley.

第二节:读后续写(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Paragraph 1:
When the police drove off, Evelyn_Johnson pushed some cookies in front of me.“You've been given an opportunity,” she said.“Don't waste it.There aren't any second chances.” I went back to Miss Johnson's a few days later, trying to do something for damaging her car.I went again the next week, and I kept going back.“How are your grades?” she'd ask.“Did you win the game?” I liked that she cared.Sure, my mom cared, a lot, but she worked so much.Miss Johnson always had the time.Over the years, Miss Johnson had become like a real grandmother to me.
Paragraph 2:
I spent more time studying and football kept me busy too.All throughout the difficulties, I thought about Miss Johnson and the chance she'd given me.I worked hard on the football field and became a_famous_football_player.I turned down an alley to escape the_police.Little did I know I'd find a way to a_better_life than I could ever have imagined.
