How many different emotions (情感) do you think you can communicate to people with your face Do you have the same facial expressions as people from different cultures Read this to find out what scientists have just discovered about this topic.
New research suggests that there are only four basic facial expressions of emotion. However, how these expressions are interpreted (理解) might depend on where you are from. Research by scientists from the University of Glasgow has challenged the traditional view of how the face expresses emotions. Until now, it was widely believed that six basic emotions — happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust (厌恶) — were expressed and recognized across different cultures. However, the University of Glasgow's work now suggests that the human face only has four basic expressions of emotion. This is because some pairs of emotions are impossible to distinguish (区分). Fear and surprise, for example, both share wide open eyes. The facial expressions for anger and disgust also look the same.
So if our faces are only able to express four basic emotions, how do we communicate a much more complex (复杂的) variety of feelings The study found that the way expressions are interpreted is different in different cultures. Looking at how people from the East and West look at different parts of the face during facial expression recognition, scientists found that although there are some common features across cultures, the six basic facial expressions of emotion are not recognized universally.
What interests people about the cross cultural aspect of the research “This work leads to understanding which emotions we share and appreciating our differences.”

A shopping center in Brazil is growing vegetables on its rooftop using waste collected from the mall's restaurants. The garden is on the roof of the Eldorado shopping
center in Sao Paolo.Workers there use trash (垃圾) from the restaurants to create compost (堆肥) for the garden.Compost is used to improve the soil of the garden.A spokesman for the mall says that the waste from 10,000 meals served each day in its food court goes into the compost.
Workers grow different kinds of fruits and vegetables on the rooftop garden, including tomatoes, lettuce (生菜) and eggplant. The fruits and vegetables grown there provide free food for the employees.Mall officials also hope to reduce the amount of waste that would end up in a garbage dump. This, they hope, will reduce carbon gases entering the atmosphere.
Cicero Evangelista leads the waste recycling effort. He says about 400 kilograms of organic waste are created every day from the mall's food court.
He says, “We weigh the material and add enzymes (酶) that remove bacteria, reduce humidity (湿度) and accelerate decomposition (分解).This is how we turn organic waste into organic compost.”
Officials at the shopping center want to save as much waste as possible. So, they held workshops for employees to learn how to best collect waste from their stores.Neide Lopes is a food court worker. She says it is helpful to put in the extra work.
“The program is active and creative, and they distribute the produce among us, so it's very good.It is a way of reducing waste, and we receive food that we don't have to pay for, and that's the best part!”
Mall employees say the project reuses waste food to make food and reduces the shopping center's carbon footprint (碳排放量) at the same time.

I'm very interested in the role of TV watching in our happiness. After all, after sleeping and work, it's the biggest consumer of the world's time.
So I was interested to see that new research suggests for couples without lots of mutual (共同的) friends, watching the same TV show (or reading the same book or watching the same movie) can help both people feel they live in the same social world. It turns out that couples who have lots of mutual friends tend to have the strongest bonds, and for those who don't have a lot of mutual friends, having “shared media experiences” helps them to feel connected.
This rang true for me.My husband Jamie and I have some mutual friends, but our social worlds don't overlap (部分重叠) extensively.Years ago, we both worked at the same place, and I remember how much fun it was when we knew so many people in common. We do have the habit of choosing shows to watch together, and it really is an activity that draws us closer. For instance, we've watched Transparent, Lost and The Shield.
I bet this finding is true for non romantic relationships, too. With my daughters, I've watched The Office, Friends, The Mindy Project and Super Store. And I've heard of offices that have a specific “office show”that people watch and discuss. It gives everyone something to talk about — and a form of harmless gossip — apart from work.
I love to read, and I like reading in a room where someone else is reading, but it's true that this activity has never seemed as companionable as watching the same TV show or movie with my husband. We've not living in the same inner world; we're not reacting to the same material at the same time.
I always felt a bit guilty about watching these TV shows with my husband — shouldn't we be doing something else? But now I recognize that it's a valuable, relationship strengthening activity.
1.According to the passage, if a couple don't have too many mutual friends, it's good for them to .
A.work in different places
B.watch TV together
C.live in the same social world
D.make friends in different social worlds
根据第二段“...couples without lots of mutual friends, watching the same TV show (or reading the same book or watching the same movie) can help both people feel they live in the same social world.”
2.What does the author think about them having some mutual friends
A.Not affecting each other's social world.
B.Improving the relation with their friends.
C.Letting them both not feel lonely any longer.
D.Making them depend on each other even more.
根据第三段“This rang true for me.My husband Jamie and I have some mutual friends, but our social worlds don't overlap extensively.”
3.What does the author mean by saying “We're not ...at the same time”?
A.She and Jamie also have topics sometimes.
B.Reading with strangers is the happiest thing.
C.She hasn't much common language with Jamie.
D.It's hard to have common language when she reads with strangers.
4.What did the author use to think about watching TV with her husband
A.It wasn't a meaningful activity.
B.It was boring but very valuable.
C.It was not better than reading.
D.It helped improve their relationship.
根据最后一段“I always felt a bit guilty about watching these TV shows with my husband — shouldn't we be doing something else?”

This spring, you may be fortunate enough to have good weather, a small piece of earth and the energy, enthusiasm and inspiration to plant a garden. There is nothing better to shake off the boredom and dullness of winter than to dig in the earth, plant some seeds and watch them grow. A small garden can produce something extra fresh for dinner, flowers for the table and a feeling of accomplishment. It is work, but it is ever so rewarding.
What about your life garden Just as a beautiful garden is a work in progress, so is the garden in your mind. It takes effort, planning, nurturing (培育) and weeding (除草) to grow a garden. What have you planted — what have you allowed to take root Is your life the picture of a well laid out garden or an untidy mixture of plants, trees and weeds whose seeds were blown your way and took root
We have all heard phrases like “sowing seeds of doubt” or “sowing seeds of discontent”. We can make a careful choice whether to allow them to take root in our lives or throw them out of our garden. Negative energy and words, like weeds, will spread quickly if left unchecked. Find a good “weed killer” — a book, an inspirational story, positive affirmations (肯定) — to help you get rid of the thoughts that reduce the beauty of your garden.
Plant as many seeds of joy and beauty as you can — in your own life and in the lives of the people with whom you live and work every day. Grow a gratitude garden, a peace garden and a dream garden. Look after them daily. If you give them time and energy, you will have a rich harvest of success, happiness and peace of mind.

Most of us know the basics of how 1 (handle) stress: we should take exercise 2 (regular) and eat healthy. Sleep is also important. But fighting stress needn't be boring. You must also spare some time in your schedule for fun, preferably with friends, and also a little quiet time, 3 (relax) by yourself. Spend time around positive people, 4 don't get your down. Look into volunteering — helping other people can help you feel less stressed. And if you're getting in a panic, stop what you 5 (do) and take several deep breaths. Pause for 6 moment and think about all the good things in your life. 7 (be) everything or everyone still stressing you out
Everyone gets stressed from time to time. It's no big deal. Some psychologists believe it's 8 (help) to think of stress as how we react to the things that stress us. The reason is that these things are 9 our control, but we can control how we react to them. So another way of fighting stress is to look for the positive in situations. Ⅳ.
When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer, the older we get.
For kids, happiness has a magical quality.Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved.
In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity.I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.
In adulthood the things that bring deep joy — love, marriage, birth — also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated.
My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.
I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.
Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work.I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.
We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we've got to have. We're so self conscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier.
Happiness isn't about what happens to us — it's about how we see what happens to us.It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

The science of happiness
Everyone wants to be happy. Some argue that the main reason people do the things they do is to become happier. Others argue that happiness is a basic human right. 1 What really makes people happy
Measuring happiness
Social scientists usually count happiness simply by asking how happy people are. 2 Ed Diener, an expert on happiness from the University of Illinois, says that this is an effective way of getting information about people's happiness.
3
In one study, researchers asked people in different parts of a country “How satisfied are you with your life?”. People in parts of the country with nicer weather said they were more satisfied with their lives. They said they lived better than people from a city with bad weather.
Money and happiness
Researchers have examined the relationship between money and happiness for many years. They say that very poor people are less happy than rich people. 4 If you have a home, food and clothes, extra money doesn't make you happier.
What makes people happy
According to researchers, there are three things that make people happy:
Having close relationships with people — family and friends. 5
Believing in something. This could be a spiritual (精神上的) view or a special philosophy (人生观) in life.
Having goals that you find enjoyable and interesting. This means that your life has a purpose.
