Hi Irene,
I am so upset with my best friend because she refuses to accept my apology or listen to me. She won't forgive me no matter what I say. She says there's no way back and I should let it go.
Signed,
Maya
Hi Maya,
I can understand how upsetting it is to lose a best friend. Best friends have an emotional investment (感情投资) in the friendship. They also spend a great deal of time together, so breakups leave a huge sadness in both friends' lives.
You haven't shared the details of the argument or misunderstanding you had with your friend but problems may appear unexpectedly in all relationships. Sincere apologies can often smooth things over. In fact, they can make the relationship stronger.
Why won't your friend forgive you Here are a few possibilities:
·The mistake was so serious (e.g.a poor judgment) that it was unforgivable;
·Your friend over reacted (反应过激) for uncertain reasons (e.g. perhaps because of her past or other things going on in her life now);
·This was one of a series of mistakes or misunderstandings, a final straw (稻草) that led your friend to say there was no way back.
You did the right thing by apologizing. Now you have to take a step back and give your friend the time she needs to cool off. You could try writing to her a note if you want to explain yourself but avoid apologizing repeatedly.
If she doesn't respond or change her mind, there's not much more that you can do. It_takes_two_persons_to_sustain_a_close_friendship.
Hope this helps and that you begin to heal from this loss.
Best,
Irene

Norma Burns has been running her organic farm for the last 18 years, but she's now looking to turn_over_a_new_leaf,_so she's giving the farm away to whoever wins her essay contest (作文竞赛).
The Bluebird Hill Farm has been everything to Norma during the last 18 years, but running it takes a lot of work, and after Norma's husband died in 2005, she's been having a tough time taking care of everything alone. She has decided to go back to the city, but she hopes to leave her beloved farm in good hands.
Although it's been valued at around D|S450,000, she doesn't want to sell her farm. She wants to give it away to a couple who can best explain why they would be her best choice in a 200 word essay. “To me, there's no better thing in life than raising organic food,” Norma said. “I'm looking for a couple who have experience and training in organic farming and are willing and able to put in the long days and hard work that farming requires. The only thing they don't have is an actual farm.”
The “A Gift of Good Land” essay contest gives farmers the chance to live the life they've always dreamed of. Apart from the D|S300 entry fee, there are a few important conditions. First of all, applicants (申请人) must have the “experience and training” required to operate an organic farm. Secondly, the contest mentions “couples” for the reason that the farm can't be operated successfully by a single person. Ever since Norma made public the news of her essay contest, her phone hasn't stopped ringing. “It just kind of exploded,” she said.
If you've always wanted to be an organic farmer but couldn't afford a farm, this is your chance. Head over to the Bluebird Hill Farm website, and sign up for the contest. Norma would pick the winning couple at last.

When I was a kid, I was very interested in everything around me. When my friends were crying, I would share that sad feeling. When it snowed, I would go out and walk in the snow. But a busy life made me feel less eager to learn or know as I entered high school. I was a good student getting good grades, but I wasn't a good friend. However hard it snowed, I didn't look out of the window any more. Finally, I realized I was self satisfied and I wanted my old self back again.
Since then, attempts at experiencing and learning new things began. Thanks to this change in attitude, I could participate in the “Japan Future Leaders School” as one of the five representatives of Korea. However, the process was never easy. The selection process was very long and thorough. Many people, including school teachers and parents, were concerned about my choice, saying I'd better focus on my studies. However, I didn't regret my determination. And while spending three weeks with hundreds of teenagers from around the world, I learned how to be with others and be confident about myself.
After returning to Korea, I came up with an answer to a question that had been worrying me for years — what do I want to do with my life For this, I started to challenge different things in various fields. I always knew the importance of sharing but to put it into practice was another thing. So I worked as a volunteer to help old and disabled people.
My previous days in high school were full of worries and discouragements. But these wonderful experiences brought me not only a better understanding of various social phenomena (现象) but also a deeper understanding of myself and people around me.

Not long ago, as my daughter and I were arriving at my son's basketball practice, an airplane flew over us.
“Are they coming to bomb (轰炸) us, Daddy?” she asked, moving closer to me. My daughter told me she'd heard something at school — a news story about an airport and bombs and people getting killed. We talked a bit about the story she'd heard, about how terrible things do happen sometimes, then I promised her that the airplane roaring above wasn't going to harm us.
In today's culture with mass media, families are surrounded by stories of shootings, bombings and other violent news. Our kids won't fully understand these stories, but they'll be frightened just the same. As parents, we need to help them have the necessary facts to process these terrible events and a broader understanding to ease their fears.
A child's world is pretty small, and kids may think that the terrible news events they've heard about are just across town or right next door. They might ask if it's safe to go to a mall, or as in the case with my daughter, if the airplane roaring overhead is going to attack. Depending on the terrible events, kids may also believe a number of inaccuracies that are spread at school or from conversations with friends. So correct whatever exaggerations (夸张) or inaccuracies they may have heard. One of the first things I talk about with my kids is simple geographic distance. We look at a map or globe and talk about where the terrible events happened and how far away it is from our home.
Tell the truth, but don't describe information that will deepen fears. Your goal as a parent is to help your kids feel safe and learn how to handle stress. Children are comforted by the safety their parents provide, knowing that even if bad things happen, the family will get through it together. This creates what scientists call “tolerable (可忍受的) stress”.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
My friend once said to me, “I don't have time to read. That's why I buy audio books (有声读物). I can turn them on in the car as I'm driving to and from work, and find that enjoyment in books without physically reading.” It is true. Working forty or more hours a week, who truly has that time to sit on a comfortable sofa to read a good book
When I was free, I researched the Internet and found some pretty wonderful audio works of literature online — books I'd heard of, but never had the chance to read.
A while ago there was this movie I missed at the cinema, and to my surprise I found the audio book for it online and therefore bought it. After it arrived, I listened to it every trip, to and from work daily. It was like being in the movie theatre, listening to that book being read out loud to me. I enjoyed the experience so much that within a week I was back at my favorite store online ordering more audio books. My other choice of audio literature is those books that will help me focus on more positive sides of life.
Sometimes I feel like a robot. Day in and day out I get up, get the kids' clothes prepared for school, pack the lunches for everyone, eat breakfast, ensure the kids are ready for school and drop the kids to school. I then travel forty five minutes to work for eight hours. Does this sound familiar to you Audio books have helped me relax and enjoy a great novel without saving time to physically sit somewhere and enjoy a book.
I'm so grateful to my friend for sharing her audio literature adventures with me.

How to make conversation with a group of strangers
One of the most common fears is speaking to strangers. While most people don't naturally enjoy talking to strangers, it is an art that you can learn. When you learn how to make conversation with a group of strangers, you never have to stand by yourself at a party again.
__1__ Say hi and tell the group your name. Don't focus on how boring you think you sound. Remember that others in the group are probably just as self conscious as you are. Doing so to a group of strangers may result in making others feel comfortable enough to open up. They may secretly be glad that you made the first move.
Practice talking to as many strangers as possible throughout the day. __2__ Soon it will be second nature for you to walk up to a group of strangers and introduce yourself.
Make a comment about something interesting in the environment. This may be something as simple as the decorations for the party or the band providing the entertainment. __3__
Ask for an opinion. People enjoy giving their opinion on any subject. __4__ Asking for an opinion works immediately to break the ice and encourages the entire group to talk with you.
Learn to listen. Making conversation is about more than trying to find the right words to say. __5__ And then find out the next thing you should say. Make sure that your response invites another response.
A.Introduce yourself.
B.Try to catch strangers' attention.
C.Ask about book ideas, gift ideas or dining ideas.
D.Each time you do this, you will feel more confident.
E.Develop the habit of listening to others carefully to understand them.

Ⅳ.阅读理解
As human beings, the people you spend time with, the places you often visit, the food you eat, and the thoughts you think all affect who you are on a deep level. They contribute to your view of the world, and finally to your health.
This can work to your advantage. For example, be with a mentor (良师益友). This is someone you often deal with because you admire and want to be like them. The goal is to hang around with this person so that you begin to have the way they think, act, and react to life events. You're up leveling simply by being around them.
Just the same, the more time you spend with people in negative habits, the more likely you are to take these on as your own. Remember, everything is energy. It's your responsibility to protect yourself and your energy from low or negative spirits.
What you may not realize is that when it comes to your health, the opinions and practices of the people around you influence your choices and behaviour, maybe even more than you know. Think about it: if you hang around with healthy eaters who make their own food, always take the stairs, and are strict about their exercise, you'll likely start to pay more attention to what you eat and how often you exercise.
On the contrary, spend time with people who are making excuses about their poor food choices, and spend their waking hours in the seated position, and soon you might find yourself doing the same.
When you don't pay attention to people you hang around with, your view will change. As your view changes, your standards drop and your behaviour no longer shows the best that you can do. You stop living life completely.

Communication skills:What is active listening
Active listening is a special way of communicating. Its goal is to make it easier for people to clearly express ideas and feelings. It can lead to a better understanding between a speaker and a listener.
Active listening can be guided by a third person, such as a therapist (治疗专家).__1__ Active listening works best when the speaker and the listener sit facing each other. The two people take turns talking. The goal is for the listener to give full attention to the speaker. You should avoid thinking about what to say next or whether what the speaker is saying is right.__2__ Try as much as possible to see things from the speaker's point of view.
Once the speaker finishes talking, you should repeat back the main points of what he or she just said.__3__ It gives him or her a chance to clear up any misunderstandings. The speaker can explain his or her ideas until he or she feels fully understood. __4__ From there, the two people switch back and forth (来回地) until they have both fully heard and understood each other.
Active listening is very useful for people who live or work together. Family members and co workers often have bad listening habits. They react to each other based on what they expect the other person to say rather than on what is actually said.__5__
A.You do not have to agree on everything.
B.Or, it can be done by two people on their own.
C.The speaker and the listener then switch roles.
D.Instead, focus on understanding what is being said.
E.Active listening gives them a way to break this pattern.
