As a first-grader in school, Gardiner was invited to do an experiment in a second-grade science class. Gardiner, who'd always been interested in science, was "super-excited".
The experiment was simple. The students put celery stalks(芹菜茎) into cups of coloured water and then watched what would happen. Over time, as the stalks "drank" the water, their leaves changed colour to match the water. It was like magic to Gardiner. "What is this How does this work " the girl wondered. "I want to solve puzzles like that!" From then on, Gardiner dreamed of becoming a scientist.
Gardiner now works at a cancer centre in the US. She is not only a scientist but also a science communicator(传播者). She wants more people to discover the wonders of science at a young age. In 2015, Gardiner and her scientist friends set up JKX Comics — a website that uses comics to explain biological science. Most of JKX Comics readers are teenagers. Topics have been from cell division (细胞分裂) to Alzheimer's disease (阿尔茨海默病). The text is simple and the drawings are colourful and full of fun.
Gardiner believes science comics are not just kid stuff. "They let more people fall in love with science. They also help everyone pay more attention to their health," she said.
"That's terribly important."
Now the comics are available free on the JKX Comics website, but Gardiner and her friends are planning to print them out and make them available to schools and libraries.
