My teenage son Karl became withdrawn after his father died. As a single parent, I tried to do my best to talk to him. But the more I tried, the more he pulled away. When his report card arrived during his junior year, it said that he had been absent 95 times from classes and had six falling grades for the year. In this case he would never graduate. I sent him to the school adviser, and I even begged (乞求)him. Nothing worked.
One night I felt so powerless that I got down on my knees and begged for help. “Please God, I can’t do anything more for my son. I’m at the end of my rope. I’m giving the whole thing up to you. ”
I was at work when I got a phone call. A man introduced himself as the headmaster. “I want to talk to you about Karl’s absences. ” Before he could say another word, I choked (哽咽)up and all my disappointment (失望) and sadness over Karl came pouring out into the ears of this stranger. “I love my son but I just don’t know what to do. I’ve tried everything to get Karl to go back to school and nothing has worked. It’s out of my hands. ” For a moment there was silence on the other end of the line. The headmaster seriously said, “Thank you for your time. ” and hung up.
Karl’s next report card showed a marked improvement in his grades. Finally, he was even on the list of the best students at school. In his fourth year, I attended a parent-teacher meeting with Karl. I noticed that his teachers were surprised at the way he had turned himself around.
After the meeting, Karl said, “Mum, remember that call from the headmaster last year ” I nodded.
“That was me. I thought I’d play a joke but when I heard what you said, it really hit me how much I was hurting you. That’s when I knew I had to make you proud. ”
26.There was silence on the other end of the line because the speaker _______.
A.was too moved to say anything to the mother

With her eyes feeling increasingly tired and unclear, 16-year-old Sun Run went to the hospital with her parents in January. She was shocked when she found out that her eyesight was from 5. 0 to 4. 6 in only a term. “A few of my friends have had the same experience lately,” Sun said.
In fact, poor eyesight among Chinese primary and high school students rose from 59. 2 percent to 70. 6 percent in the first six months of 2020 because of online classes.
To protect students’ eyesight, the Chinese government has worked out new requirements for school supplies (供应) and equipment (设备) that will work on March 1, 2022.
According to the requirements, the size of text in students’ textbooks should be no smaller than nine-point. Teachers should also avoid using multimedia (多媒体) equipment like screens that are too bright. There are also requirements for desk and classroom lights. For example, these lights should give off as little blue light as possible. Blue light is bad for our eyes, but many of the electronic instruments we use every day, including our phones and computer screens, give off blue light.
Chinese government has also taken other steps to protect students’ eyesight in China. In May 2021, the National Health Commission required schools to make sure that students have at least two hours of outdoor activity a day.
30.Sun Run’s eyesight increased by 0.4 in only a term.
31.We can infer that the rise of students with poor eyesight over the first half of 2020 is caused by long time’s looking at screens.
32.There are 3 requirements for school supplies and equipment mentioned in the passage to protect students’ eyesight.
33.Teachers should stop using screens or other multimedia equipment to protect students’ eyesight.
34.The purpose of the passage is to tell students how to use electronic instruments correctly.

“Lying down” (also known as tang ping), has become a hot word among young Chinese people these days. The idea of low material needs and being willing to accept whatever life gives them is described as a “lying down” lifestyle.
Some young people complain that to raise a child needs too much money and they often get into a fight with their family. At the same time, the rising living costs including food and housing have pushed them so hard that they could hardly breathe. Some want to lie down because their tiring jobs, competition with peers, as well as personal relationships force them to run away.
On the other hand, with the great improvement of living conditions, it is true that some Chinese youth today have lost the spirit of fighting hard for a better life. “I stay at home, sleep and watch TV series, and I’m pleased with what I have now. Actually, there are many people around me who value happiness and freedom most,” said Daisy, who left her job two weeks ago. No wonder that some young people would choose to live a simple way instead of always following the good quality of fighting hard.
Interestingly, most young people, who are “big fans” of the “lying down” lifestyle, point out that they only accept a temporary (暂时的) lying down as a short rest. In fact, lying down is not totally comfortable for them. Most young people who lie down always regard it as a lack of ambition (雄心壮志) and feel ashamed (感到羞耻的) about it.
“Young people have both ambition and confusion (困惑) about their future, but most of us have refused to waste chances and challenges,” a college student said.
35.Do most young people really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle according to the passage
______________________________________
36.What is a “lying-down” lifestyle

37.Why do some young Chinese choose to “lie down” according to the passage

However, the real enemy is the virus – not the patients or people from Wuhan or Hubei province. Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong echoed this idea in a speech at the Chinese New Year dinner. “Even though the virus started in Wuhan, it doesn’t respect nationality or race (种族). It does not check your passport (护照) before it goes into your body. Anybody can be infected,” he said.
It is not the _____51_____(patient) fault that they have been infected. There is no reason to blame them. If patients didn’t go to the hospital for fear of discrimination, the virus _____52_____(spread) to more people. “Protecting them is just as important as protecting ourselves,” Ding said.

Dear Miss Lin,
Your advice is always helpful to us. I’ve met some problems these days. First of all, I have to spend so much time on homework that I can’t have enough time to sleep or rest. And the homework is quite difficult. I always come across exercises that I can’t work out. My parents are worried about my study and arranging extra-classes for me. I feel stressed. Second, we are going to graduate, so it’s hard for us to say goodbye to each other. What’s more, my parents and I lack communication, therefore they can’t understand me. When I want to relax myself by listening to music, they think it’s a waste of time.
I am looking forward to your early reply to give me some advice on my problems.
Yours,
Wang Lin
