Top designers are imagining our life in 50 years.
Campbell Rey
When creating products from natural materials, we are taking from resources that are limited. And it has a negative influence on the planet. This comes with a level of responsibility as a designer. In 50 years, we will hopefully 3D print what are now rare, wanted and beautiful natural materials like minerals and rosewood. This technology would be readily available, following the movement of large companies like Tesla making their intellectual property (知识产权) public to allow others to develop them for the benefit of mankind as a whole.
This would allow for the creation of new natural materials without any harm to the environment. Something like this would present designers with lots of new choices, and would change the way we think about our surroundings. And while we're at it, these new natural materials could break down whenever you want. Now, wouldn't that be something
Ben van Berkel
While present health related concerns focus primarily on the body and physical fitness. I think there is a growing need for architecture to actively contribute to human happiness on physical and social levels.
I imagine that, in the future, there will be a need for a system that supplies us with continuous information about health related conditions in the built environment. It will measure and inform us about such things as air pollution, noise, daylight, fresh air and temperature levels to make sure that we're safe and comfortable in buildings.
It will also warn of dangers and, in so doing, let us realize how our immediate environment is affecting us. I imagine this as a sensor (感应器) system that both collects information and communicates it through whatever personal communication technology we're using in 50 years.
Today this would be communicated through an app (应用程序), but who knows In the future we may be receiving information directly to our senses through implants (植入物).

Have you ever wondered how the earliest human beings kept track of time Scientists believe, historically, humans have relied on the movement of the sun across the sky to track time. The ancient Egyptians built tall obelisks (方尖碑) that would cast shadows to help divide the day into sections. These obelisks worked in much the same way as sundials (日晷), which were a popular means of timekeeping long ago. Of course, sundials didn't help much at night or on cloudy days. To help keep time when it wasn't sunny, ancient people also learned to track the movement of the planets and constellations (星座) after dark.
Other devices were developed over time, including hourglasses and water clocks. These devices relied upon the time it would take a particular substance (物质), such as sand or water, to move from one part of a container to another. Rather than clocks, though, these devices were more like timers.
How did people long ago set up a meeting at a certain time in the future Some historians believe many people relied upon a technique as simple as pointing to an area of the sky. When the sun reached that point, that was when they would meet the next day.
Of course, humans, being the clever creatures we are, relied upon a variety of natural solutions to the problem of timekeeping. For example, many people simply trained their bodies to wake up at the first light of dawn. Others may have relied upon animals, such as roosters, as alarm clocks. If people had to be up before dawn, they might have relied upon the full bladder method. They could wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

If we list all of the different activities that humanoid robots can do, we have walking up stairs, dancing, playing ping pong, kicking a football, and plenty more. Most of those just listed are performed by just one robot, Honda's Asimo, who seems to be a go to robot when looking at humanoid robot capabilities (能力). But if you threw him in a lake, he'd just gradually disappear and sink — as opposed to swimming.
But recently scientists in Japan have developed what they say is the world's most modern swimming robot, designed to improve the performance in the pool. The robot, which is called “Swumanoid”, isn't yet ready for a role in Japan's Olympic swimming programme, but developers hope to have it ready as a coach's assistant.
A team from the Tokyo Institute of Technology used 3 D equipment to map a human swimmer, allowing them to perfect the front crawl, the backstroke (仰泳) and freestyle swimming.
Swumanoid is going to be used to help research into swimming. But the team, led by Professor Chung Changhyun and Motomu Nakashima, hopes that eventually robots like Swumanoid can act as robot lifeguards, protecting the coasts and helping swimmers in need.
With a pace of six metres per second, Swumanoid swims just as less three times as the fastest human. However, it is capable of all the different types of swimming styles, such as the butterfly and backstroke. Furthermore, it is capable of perfectly doing the same actions over and over, which is very difficult for humans. Swumanoid's ability in this aspect helps researchers measure various elements of swimming, like the force required to push swimmers through the water.
And for the researchers it's about using the robot to learn more about the dynamics (动力学) for swimming. When we see Swumanoid, we can't help but think of a future in which robots compete against humans in a mixed Olympics.

During the winter, Andy Law likes to keep his house warm, which used to be a problem. He'd sometimes forget to turn down the thermostat (恒温器) when he traveled, which raised his heating bills. But he hasn't had to worry about that since buying one of Google's Nest thermostats.
In fact, companies are developing many smart devices (装置) that will tailor their functions to what they learn about their users' needs. But many of these devices are still on_the_drawing_board,_so the Nest thermostat first provides a good example of what is fast coming down the road.
Officials at Google Inc. say the Nest thermostat can understand what its owners want. “The first three to four days is when it's most eager to learn,” said Maxime Veron, director of product marketing for Nest. “It gathers data, temperature, the time it was set and occupancy.” After four days, Nest learns enough to keep the house as hot or cold as the person generally prefers at different times.
One feature that will click in about a week after Nest starts learning is its “Auto Away” function. Nest will automatically adjust the temperature to whatever the person previously has indicated they prefer when they're gone.
The Auto Away sensors also are designed to scan a room for movement “above most pets' heads”, so it doesn't mistake a dog or cat for a person and assume someone is still in the home. But the thermostats can be fooled by large pets.
Another feature many people seem to like is “Nest Leaf”, which gives the user feedback (反馈) whenever the temperatures they set save energy. So if the person raises the temperature enough on a hot day or down on a cool one, a green leaf appears on the thermostat.
However, some people say that it is too expensive. But after trying it out, PC Magazine editor John Delaney said, “It is a must for anyone looking to save on heating and air conditioning costs and I like the idea of setting it and forgetting it.”

Ⅳ.阅读理解
We spend a lot of time on our mobile devices these days and automakers have taken note, rolling out connected cars that make it easy to do nearly everything from your phone.“We all enjoy those kinds of experiences where you want something and by the push of a button everything gets taken care of for you. You don't have to go here and there and piece a bunch of things together by yourself,” said Jim Buczkowski, director of Ford electronics systems. He recently introduced FordPass, a mobile platform that lets car owners access services like finding and paying for a parking spot. “Here's the detail of what charges will be, and then I submit, and then I receive a QR photo allowing my entry to that parking location,”said he.
At Buick, the OnStar RemoteLink app connects owners to their cars no matter how far away they are.“This car in Detroit, I could start from here in New York. Or let us say I have the only key to it and my wife in Detroit needs to get in the car, I can unlock it for her from here,” said Stuart Fowle, manager of Buick communications.
The feature, in fact, harnesses the car's 4G LTE connectivity. Up to seven mobile devices can connect to it at any given time.
“We want people to feel as if they were at home within the car, which a lot of people want to be in just for the driving experience, now they can be in there, and even the passengers can be in there as well for the connectivity experience,” explained Rob Peterson, marketing manager for Buick crossovers.
But what does that connectivity mean for your privacy It is important to have personal information to create that individualized, personalized experience, but certainly it will be a consumer's option. For certain consumers, it may not even be an issue. There certainly is a factor where a younger consumer is much more comfortable giving up a lot more privacy and data than an older consumer is, and more likely than not, you are going to see a behavior similar to how they handle their personal privacy within the vehicle.
Considering how capable our mobile devices have become, perhaps the only question left to answer is: “ Who's driving?”
