Julia Koceva, who is only a 23 year old girl, has taken the Internet by storm with her impressive drawings — stippling (点彩). Stippling is an old technique — creating a pattern and applying varying degrees of solidity or shading to it by using small dots.
Julia Koceva works in a police station at daytime. She spends her nights working on her amazing drawings. She takes between 40 and 100 hours to finish a piece, trying her best to apply tiny black dots to a large piece of paper, using nothing but a ballpoint pen. As Alphonso Dunn, author of “Pen and Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide,”
says, stippling creates a unique texture (神韵) but requires patience and a very careful approach. It's a technique that requires mountains of patience, but the end results are awe inspiring.
Julia Koceva, the young Swedish artist, draws all kinds of things, from realistic animals and flowers to musical instruments, but her most impressive artworks are obviously the celebrity portraits (名人肖像). Her collection features portraits of pop persons like David Bowie and Jack Nicholson, with everything but their hair made up of thousands of tiny black dots.
Thousands of hours devoted to creating these beautiful works of art have taken_a_toll_on her health. She has several diseases that were caused by drawing for so long a time every day. But Julia Koceva continues to draw and catches the imagination of her fans with every new piece she posts on Instagram. Now she has over 68,000 followers on Instagram.

It all started a few years ago in the quiet village of Mollington after a number of burglaries (盗窃). Those living in the village came up with the idea that they themselves could keep an eye on their neighbours' property (财产) while they were away on holiday. Since then, with the help of the government and police, more than 50,000 “Neighbourhood Watch” schemes (项目) have been set up in the UK.
The object of each “Watch” group is to prevent things like this from happening again in any street or area. Each villager who is a member of the scheme agrees to do their best to stop anyone stealing something in the village. Everything is done calmly and carefully — it is the police who check out each report and find out what is happening. Villagers who are part of the group are not supposed to act as police or put themselves in any danger.
When a new “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme is set up in an area, the first thing people notice is the large, brightly coloured “Neighbourhood Watch” board. This is a real warning to most burglars, because very few of them will take a chance of breaking into someone's house if they know that there is a high risk of being seen by neighbours keeping a lookout. Burglars also know that people who are part of the “Neighbourhood Watch” schemes are more likely to have fitted good locks to their doors and windows.
Since the “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme was set up, there are fewer burglaries and there is a new community spirit. It is bringing people together as never before, and encouraging people to care for each other. New friendships are also being made.
4.The “Neighbourhood Watch” scheme in Mollington was started________.
A.as the first of its kind in the UK
B.after 50,000 burglaries in the area
C.because the police were short of hands
D.because it was a popular holiday centre
5.The job for members of a “Watch” group is to ________.
A.do their best to catch burglars
B.ask strangers to leave at once
C.help those who are in trouble
D.report a burglary to the police
6.What's the purpose of the text
A.To advise. B.To discuss.
C.To educate. D.To introduce.

Mass communication has been growing and affecting the way communities and people behave. At every stage of the development of communication, from the telegraph to the Internet, societies have had to adapt to its effects. But have the effects been more positive or negative
The saying “knowledge is power” has been an excellent motivator for people to improve their lives, but today the massive amount of information available through the Internet doesn't always seem to be helping people in the way we'd hoped. Rather than improving people's lives and bringing us closer together, the information age is making us more divided and irresponsible.
Nevertheless, many people find comfort in their virtual (虚拟的) worlds and are happy to connect with real life friends and online friends from the familiar surroundings of their living rooms. However, being able to reinvent themselves online and be whoever they want to be leads to the question of whether they are losing their identities by living in a virtual world. It's not all bad news, however. Mass communication has helped change some attitudes for the better. Take our views on the environment for example. Internet campaigns by governments and other organizations have helped popularize the ideas of recycling, protecting wildlife and reducing pollution.
Modern electronic communication now influences every aspect of our lives — it is a powerful tool that has raised some concerns for society. However, it has also brought countless benefits to society. At the end of the day, it can be used both for good or evil, which largely relies on the morals and sense of responsibility of the individual or community involved. In short, it needs to be used with care.
7.According to the text, the information age today ________.
A.helps people improve their lives
B.fully shows “Knowledge is power”
C.makes people feel more connected to others
D.fails to achieve our expectations sometimes
8.What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.People only connect with online friends.
B.Online friends can be comforting for all people.
C.Virtual lives can make people clear of who they are.
D.The Internet helps to raise our environmental awareness.
9.What is the writer's attitude to electronic communication in the last paragraph
A.It should be used in a cautious way.
B.It does more harm than good to society.
C.Its side effects can't be handled by individuals.
D.It should be strictly controlled by the government.
解析:选A 推理判断题。根据最后一段的最后一句“In short, it needs to be used with care.”可推知,A项正确。
10.What does the text mainly talk about
A.The comfort of the virtual worlds.
B.The effects of mass communication.
C.The development of mass communication.

At the words, Michelle went to her bedroom and took out all the coins from her little moneybox. After counting the coins three times, she slipped out the back door and made her way to the_drug_store six blocks away ...
She waited for a long time before the pharmacist (药剂师) turned around and asked her. “And what do you want?”
“Well, it's about my brother,” Michelle answered. “He's really, really sick ... and I want to buy a miracle.”
“I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Jack and he has something very bad growing inside his body and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don't sell miracles here, little_girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you,” the pharmacist said. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it.” And with these words, Michelle poured out all the coins from her pockets. It doesn't matter how much money she actually had with her; what matters is her faith, a faith that miracles do exist.”
