Global Positioning Systems are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellite based systems provide turn by turn directions to help people get to where they want to go. But, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame. Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown, it is a combination of the two.
We spoke to Mr. Brown by Skype. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPS equipped car to use during his stay. Barry Brown: “And they just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And, then it wasn't until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in. So again, the GPS is kind of ‘garbage in, garbage out’.”
Mr. Brown says this is a common human error. But, he says, what makes the problem worse has something to do with some of the shortcomings, or failures, of GPS equipment. Barry Brown: “One problem with a lot of the GPS units is that they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn. Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it is going to the wrong place.”
Barry Brown formerly served as a professor at the University of California, San Diego. While there, he worked on a project with Eric Laurier from the University of Edinburgh. The two men studied the effects of GPS devices on driving by placing cameras in people's cars. They wrote a paper based on their research. It is called “The Normal, Natural Troubles of Driving with GPS.” It lists several areas where GPS systems can cause confusion for drivers. These include maps that are outdated, incorrect or difficult to understand. They also include timing issues related to when GPS commands are given.
Barry Brown says, “ to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.”
1.In Paragraph 2, Mr. Brown mentioned his friend in the conversation to ________.
A.laugh at his stupid friend
B.describe an example of human error
C.build up his own reputation
D.prove the GPS system is only garbage
解析:选B 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“They actually put their home address in.”和第三段第一句“Mr. Brown says this is a common human error.”可知,他们实际是输入了他们家的住址,但从下文可知布朗先生说这是人会犯的一个常见的错误,并提到他朋友这个例子,是为了向我们讲述这样一种人会犯的错误,故选B项。
2.Which of the following statement would Barry Brown be most likely to agree with
A.GPS units are to blame for the most GPS service failure.
B.We should introduce higher standard for the driving license.
C.Cameras are urgently needed to help improve GPS systems.
D.Some shortcomings of GPS equipment are more likely to result in service failure.

A.Wrong maps. B.Outdated maps.
C.Difficult instructions. D.Timing of GPS commands.

4.What would be the best title for the text
A.Driving Confusions Can Be Caused By Small Screen
B.Driving with GPS Can Be Difficult
C.Driving without GPS Should Be Much More Convenient
D.GPS Equipment In Driving: To Be Deserted Or Not

The prospect of using electric automobiles is an exciting one. The image of the electric car in the public imagination is linked with cleanliness, cost saving and energy efficiency. If electric cars really offer all these benefits, why
aren't we using them today Can the electric cars really live up to people's expectations With companies like Nissan, Ford, GM, and Tesla Motors preparing to offer a variety of electric autos to the general public, these kinds of questions are growing in importance every day.
In order to see why electric cars are not used as widely as one might expect, it will be necessary to take a short look at the history of the electric automobile in the United States. The first true electric car built in the the US was made by William Morrison in 1891. As automobiles became more popular, sales of electric cars surpassed (超过) those of steam and gasoline pared to steam and gas cars, electric autos were cleaner, quieter, and easier to start.
However, as the years passed, the gasoline powered automobile gained market share. Two of the reasons for gasoline cars' rise were the invention of the turn key ignition (点火) and the discovery of large amounts of oil in Texas, which made gasoline more affordable for the average consumer. However, the_nail_in_the_coffin for electric cars was the increase in distances that drivers traveled in their automobiles. With improvements in the road system, people drove farther and farther away from home until the energy of electric cars' batteries was simply no longer sufficient to carry them all the way.
After learning about their physical limitations, it is clear why electric cars are not in widespread use today. Nonetheless, some progress is being made towards a future with electric cars. Slowly, battery technologies are being developed which will allow electric cars to go farther. However, don't expect to see pure electric vehicles in widespread use anytime soon.

It's surprising to see bicycles back on the streets of many cities again but with a new look thanks to the sharing economy and a boom (兴起) in bike sharing companies that work through mobile apps — sort of like car hailing (叫车) services Uber or Didi, except for bikes.
Cheap, practical and green, sharable bikes have become very popular with students and young professionals in China's leading cities. Why do we have to own a bike when we can use our mobile phone to scan a QR code (扫描二维码) and unlock a nearby, new bike, ride it for however long we want at incredibly low prices (1 yuan or 0.5 yuan for 30 minutes), park and lock it, and then move on, only to pick up another bike elsewhere later in the day
Bike sharing companies in China sport a parade of colorful brands of their smart bikes — orange for Mobike and yellow for Ofo, to name two market leaders among some 30 companies that have jumped into this area. Just as with Uber and Didi, you can bet there will be price wars and battles.
You might say that bike sharing is nothing new or exciting. After all, bike sharing services have appeared in New York City and London. But the business model and technology for bike sharing in China is more advanced than in the West. In China, you can drop your rented bike wherever you want — thanks to GPS technology that locates and tracks the position for each bicycle.
Bike sharing is regarded as a way to reduce traffic jams, cut air pollution, and improve health. However, statistics show more than 10,000 sharable bikes have been damaged in various ways — such as bikes being painted or key like QR codes being damaged. In Beijing and Shanghai, bikes are being dropped everywhere and starting to crowd city sidewalks. Fortunately, the bike sharing companies are considering the problems.

__1__ This will help if you're stuck in a long traffic jam and get hungry, and it's honestly a pretty good time waster, too. Try to bring food that won't make a mess in the car! If you're drinking anything sweet, be careful of spilling (洒出).
Play a road game. Playing a road game is a great way to get rid of the boredom. __2__ I Spy is a very popular road game where you say “I spy with my little eyes something that is ...” and you say the color of the object you've chosen, and the others have to guess what it is.
Take a breath. __3__ If you don't feel comfortable in a serious traffic jam where the cars aren't moving at all, just roll down the window or even open the door (if it's safe to do so), and take a breath beside your car for a second. This can help you feel better if you're carsick.
__4__ There are plenty of other things you can do while being stuck in a traffic jam! Ask the driver to go to a good radio station and start calling in and get involved (使参与). No matter who's watching you, sing along to the song on the radio at the top of your voice and dance around in your seat to the song! Start a conversation with the people in the car next to you! __5__
