Visitors to central Austin, Texas, would be easy to miss a small, old house called the O · Henry Museum.William Sydney Porter (1862-1910) — better known as O · Henry, was one of America's best loved writers of short stories.Beginning in 1893, he lived here.It was saved from destruction, moved, and turned into a museum in 1934.The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of him.
William Porter rented this house and lived with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum belonged to the Porters.Others did not, but are in the house to recreate the way it looked during their lifetime.
Porter worked at a pharmacy, farm, land office and bank.He also loved words and writing. The museum has special proof of Porter's love of language — his dictionary. It's said that he read every word in it.Porter started a small publication called “The Rolling Stone”.He wasn't being published early on, so he published himself. His funny stories, poems, and drawings were published in the magazine. But it was too costly to continue for long, so he closed the project after about one year.
Other troubles would lead the Porters to leave Austin.Porter was accused of financial wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job.Fearing a trial, he fled the country. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced trial and was found guilty. He served three and a half years in a federal prison in Ohio.

A new genre (体裁) of fiction has come out of rising sea levels. Climate fiction, or “cli fi”, is a sub genre of science fiction. It imagines a future where man struggles against the extremes of a changing environment.
Although it is still an unexplored field in the Chinese literary circle, climate change literature is now a regular course in universities in the U.S., the U.K. and India, etc. A brief Amazon. com search of “climate fiction” returns more than 1,800 results, reflecting a growing demand for books that focus on environmental issues.
According to The Atlantic, cli fi stories seldom talk about “unreal technologies or faraway planets”, unlike traditional sci fi. Cli fi is a lot more down_to_earth. It examines the effects of pollution, rising sea levels, and global warming on human civilization.
Cli fi has been made more attractive to younger generations thanks to its appearance in movies and TV shows, Interstellar, Snowpiercer, MaddAddam, just to name a few. The term “cli fi”, created by the U.S. writer and climate activist Dan Bloom, seems to be helping “raise awareness about global warming”. The U.K. cli fi writer Sarah Holding wrote that the genre “connects young readers with their environment” .
But not everyone is convinced of cli fi's potential. George Marshall, founder of Climate Outreach Information Network, expressed concern that cli fi would strengthen what people already believe rather than change anyone's mind. “The unconvinced will see these stories as proof that this issue is a fiction,” he said. “The already convinced will be still concerned, but the story lines may reduce the seriousness of the issue.”

The chance of a snowy holiday season in most American cities is practically impossible this year, so any festive atmosphere to be enjoyed will have to be the imaginary sort. Luckily, there are books for that.
The Complete Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen
Any reader of fairy tales knows Andersen's responsible for the snowy scenes in The Snow Queen, the story of children Kay and Gerda, who must face the goddess like woman who controls all snowflakes after Kay is kidnapped.
Family Life by Akhil Sharma
It's a beautiful yet tragic novel about an Indian family immigrating to America, only to face entirely new hardships. Sharma's novel isn't entirely set in the wintertime, but his poetic descriptions of winter weather as lovely yet isolating make it a great choice for a December read.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Go ahead and give up the movie adaptation that has been produced recently and read or re read the classic itself. You know the story: a scientist driven by his ambition discovers a method for creating life, and spends two years cobbling together a living creature, who later feels angry with him.
An American Childhood by Annie Dillard
Dillard's first book is, as its title suggests, about her change from being a self centered child to being an adult more concerned with the world around her than with her own personal concerns. People have considered poetry difficult for as long as it has been around in societies, but in the past, people tended to value poetry because of its complexity rather than keeping away from it. The fact that they found poetry difficult meant that the words themselves carried weight heavy enough to contain meanings they themselves could not otherwise express. This may be why the love poem became so popular: people sought to express their love and poetry became symbolic of their emotion.
If you are one of those people who find poetry difficult to understand or enjoy, try approaching a poem from a different aspect. No one will argue that the meaning is often hard to come by in a poem, but instead of seeking out the meaning, try enjoying the rhythm of a poem, or the sound of the words. Poetry can be musical in a sense, but more so, it can be fun simply to combine words in a new and different way. Seeking the meaning can make poetry difficult, but enjoying the poem for its rhythmic qualities can be less frightening and immediately rewarding.
That is not to say, however, that you must give up understanding the meaning. There seems little reason to write anything if there is not a meaning behind it, and so a reader of poetry must find out how to make the poem understandable. The easiest way to do this is to break the poem down into smaller parts and analyze — line by line, if necessary — the smaller meanings of these parts. This then allows the reader to tie all those smaller themes together to understand the hidden meaning behind the text. Start with one line and find out its meaning. Then move on to the next. And remember, poetry can be very subjective, so often the meaning is what you make it. There are no wrong answers.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775, and died on July 18, 1817.She began writing early in life, although the prejudices (偏见) of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously (匿名地).
But Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath's many famous local people and visitors. She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806, Bath was her home. Her deep knowledge of the city is fully seen in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which are largely set in Bath. The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the well ordered world that she described so well in her novels. Now the pleasure of learning Jane Austen's Bath can be enhanced (增强) by visiting the Jane Austen Center in Gay Street. Here, in a Georgian town house in the heart of the city, you can find out more about Bath in Jane Austen's time and the importance of Bath in her life and work.
The Center has been set up with the help and guidance of members of the Jane Austen Society. After your visit to the Center, you can look round the attractive shop, which offers a huge collection of Jane Austen related books, cards and many specially designed gifts.Jane Austen quizzes are offered to keep the children busy.
You can also have walking tours of Jane Austen's Bath, which is a great way to find out more about Jane Austen and discover the wonderful Georgian city of Bath. The tour lasts about one and a half hours. The experienced guides will take you to the places where Jane lived, walked and shopped.
