He lived his whole life as a poor man. His art and talent were recognized by almost no one.He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time.
Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life. Others are interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art.
Van Gogh was the son of a pastor. He left school when he was just 15. By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art.
Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions (情感) into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes (绘画笔法).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he wrote in a letter to his brother in 1888.
Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr.Gacher sold for $ 89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant color in them are attractive to people,” said a van Gogh's fan.

2.creation 考查词形转换。该作品(《清明上河图》)创作于北宋时期。空处作句子的主语,因此填名词creation“作品”。

If ever anyone was born to be a painter, Pablo Picasso was. Picasso won a prize when he was only fifteen. When Picasso was over ninety, he still took up his paints and brushes to start a new picture as if he were seeing things for the first time. That's why we have called him the youngest painter. Young people are always trying new things and new ways of doing things.
No one could be sure what kind of picture he would produce. If he had painted a picture of you it might have looked exactly like you. Or it might have been all lines, squares, circles and strange colored shapes.
Picasso was trying to paint what he saw with his mind as well as with his eyes. He painted the side of the face as well as the front. He may have painted it flat, as though it had no depth.
Picasso painted a picture of Gertrude Stein in 1906. She visited the painter's studio eighty or ninety times while he painted her picture. Then one day Picasso wiped out the painted head on which he had worked for so long and went away for the summer. When he returned he went at once to the unfinished picture. Quickly he finished the face from memory. He could see the woman's face more clearly in his mind than he could see it when she sat in the studio in front of him.
For several years of his depression, he painted people from the poorer parts of the city. His colors got darker. Most of these pictures were painted in shades of blue and showed very clearly what the artist saw and felt. Picasso did not have to wait long for success. As he began to sell his pictures and to become recognized as a painter his pictures took on a warmer look. At the same time he began to paint with more and more freedom and independence.

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But, at nearly 500 years of age, time_is_catching_up_with_the_Mona_Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo da Vinci in 1505, is getting worse by the year, according to the Louvre museum (卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed.“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,”the museum said. Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy. Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, many attracted by the mystery of her smile.“It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her, she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,”said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University.“It's because direct vision (视觉) is excellent at picking up details, but less suited to looking at shadows. Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile. Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France's King Francis Ⅰ in 1519.
In 1911, the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat. He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.
During World War Ⅱ, French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.

Paper cutting is a very special visual art of Chinese handicrafts. One saying is that it originated from the religious ceremony or offering sacrifices (供品). The ancient people cut papers into animals or people. They either buried them with the dead or burned them on the funerals, wishing that things that paper stand for could be with the dead. Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. After hundreds of years' development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folk, especially women.
It is easy to learn about cutting a piece of paper but very difficult to master it with perfection. Beginners need only a knife and paper. For craftsman, they need knives and gravers of various types to make complicated (复杂的) patterns. It can be one piece of paper or many pieces. Simple patterns can be cut with a knife. For complicated patterns, people first pasted the pattern on the paper and then used various kinds of knives to make it. No mistake can be made during the process otherwise the work would fail.
Paper cutting covers nearly all topics, from flowers, birds, animals, legendary people, figures in classic novels, to types of facial make up in Peking Opera. Paper cutting has various styles in different parts of China. In the past, women living in the countryside gathered in their free time to make paper cutting, which is a way to judge their skillfulness. As society develops, fewer and fewer people learn this skill while there are some who still regard it as a profession. At present, there are factories and associations for paper cutting in China. Exhibitions and exchanges are held regularly and books of this kind are published. Paper cutting has changed from decoration to a kind of art. At the same time, paper cutting also appears in cartoons, on stage, in magazines or in TV series.

Ⅴ.阅读理解
John Bramblitt is an artist who learned to see through his paintbrush when his world went dark. Before going blind at the age of 30, he had never even painted before. But now his works are talked about around the world, and his experience is inspiring millions.Bramblitt is an artist whose work is defined by fearless and expressive palettes (调色板), and speaks_volumes.The meanings he expresses in his works are diverse. It is hard to imagine that the man behind the colorful paintings is a blind man.
Fourteen years ago, he suffered complications from epilepsy (癫痫) that left him irreversibly (不可逆地) blind.“When I first lost my sight I was really angry; I was so angry that I wouldn't admit that I was angry.I was angry at everything.Everything in the world that was important in my life seemed to be taken away from me.I couldn't leave my apartment by my own.I couldn't read, and I couldn't write anymore,” he said.
Losing his eyesight was a turning point in Bramblitt's life.He calls it “the deepest, darkest hole”.But he eventually climbed out of that hole, by picking up the paintbrush.“I had thought about painting before. It might be horrible to say, but I didn't think I'd be very good at it.When I lost my sight, I thought well I didn't have to look at it anyway, so I thought I would give it a try,” he said.“When I first started painting, I never thought of showing it to anybody ever. It's just something that I needed to do, to let it out.The whole thing of painting is really symbolic to prove that I still have some sort of perception (感知) that I could still see.”
He has never seen his wife or his young son, but it is clear he knows exactly what they look like. His portraits are proof that his fingertips (画像) are every bit as perceptive as his eyes once were.
Bramblitt's art is gaining notice in galleries around the world. He can often be found in museums or at schools, teaching his technique and what he has learned about life and color to children.
