“Hmm, I’m not sure.” Danny reached down to get it. It was a book, and it looked old. The title was Buried Treasure. He started looking through the book. It was full of different maps that were supposed to lead to buried treasure. “Wow, this book looks great!”
Their friend Fred joined them during a break at school. Susie held the book and turned the pages. “Where do you think the treasure is ” asked Fred.
“I don’t know, but I hope it’s good!” said Danny.
They started looking around for hints. Chinese painting, also known as the traditional national painting, one of the traditional paintings with a long history, has its unique and independent system. Using brushes, ink, and Chinese pigments(天然颜料), a painting is drawn on a special kind of paper (Xuan paper) or silk. The traditional subjects are figures, landscapes, flowers and birds.
In comparison with Western painting, Chinese painting has its own artistic characteristics. After a careful study of the object, a painter can discover the rules of its structure, and then produce it by the mind's eye. It is not merely a simple copy, but it combines the object with the artistic concept of the producer, turning a natural image into an "artistic image". The object can show the artist's feelings and personality to achieve the effect of "being alike not only in spirit, but also in appearance". Not all the objects are to be drawn on the paper, and much space is left for the imagination. The use of lines is important in Chinese painting. Clear, swift, sharp and changeable lines are combined with the push, point and press of the brush and ink to show the quality of the object and variations of tone(色调). Ancient Chinese artists listed 18 different ways of drawing lines with the brush in figure painting. Different ways of creating lines are used when painting a landscape, flowers and birds, clouds, and bamboos.
Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy are different branches of art stemming(起源) from the same origin. They use the same kind of tools and all the lines used in painting are variations of the points and lines of calligraphy. Though they are different artistic forms, they are closely linked in terms of their expression of thoughts and feelings. They influence each other to create another artistic feature.
8.Which of the following words can describe the common subjects of traditional Chinese painting
A. Valuable. B. Independent. C. Special. D. Natural.
9. The writer believes that a traditional Chinese painter's picture ________.
A. reflects social problems of his times B. describes mainly a natural image
C. expresses his thoughts D. tells a true story
10. It can be inferred that a traditional Chinese painter spent much time ________.
A. traveling
B. learning to draw lines
C. reading
D. studying calligraphy before drawing
11. What do painting and calligraphy have in common
A. Using the similar techniques. B. Starting from the same period.
C. Belonging to the same artistic form. D. Covering the same themes.
D
Young people these days are exposed to an almost constant stream of written words. They communicate by web messages, or by Facebook updates, or by Tweets.
When I was a boy, in the 1980s, we communicated by telephone. I never wrote a single word to anybody my own age, except to pass notes in class when I was bored. The Internet and the mobile phone have changed all that, and put a new emphasis (强调) on the written word.
Written words are important now. Everything, especially for the young, depends on them. Online chatting and searching, messaging and e mailing, all depend on writing, and writing quickly.
There is no time now for thinking about the right phrase carefully or planning the best way to say something before you make that phone call, that text and that e-mail demanding an exigent response.
The important difference between writing and speaking is that writing can be crossed out(划掉),whereas speech munication is now a continuous work in progress, as long as it's done on screen, and as long as you delete it before anyone reads it. Instead of technology having made the accuracy of spelling and grammar irrelevant, the move from the spoken to the written word has had the opposite effect:we judge accuracy severely, whether it be a romantic message or a job application, and are unimpressed by people who don't know how to use punctuation(标点符号).
Glancing around the Internet, you can find examples of terrible English, but you'll also find an astonishing number of corrections.
There has probably never been a time in history when writing has been so universal(普遍) and so important. Books on the English language can now top the bestseller lists. Today, the Philippines holds the record for texting:27 per user per day. In Scandinavia, more than 85 per cent of the population communicates by text. Some 294 billion e mail messages are sent every day. These are communications that until recently were made by telephone, letter, face to face or, and this is highly important in the communication debate, not at all.
12.How does the author bring up the topic
A.By following time order. B.By telling an interesting story.
C.By presenting research findings. D.By making comparisons.
13. What does the underlined word "exigent" in paragraph 3 mean
A.Thoughtful. B.Individual. C.Instant. D.Official.
14. What change does technology bring to the written word according to paragraph 4
A.It is judged seriously. B.It spreads quickly.
C.It involves special rules. D.It accepts terrible English.
15. What does the author think of the new technology
A.It is effective in learning the written language.
B.It makes the written word popular again.
C.It strengthens communication between people.
D.It may lead to the disappearance of printed books.

Good friendship can get people through almost anything. Many times, a good friend will know what you need before you even ask for it, and they'll want to offer a helping hand. That's what happened to two friends in Caddo Hills High School. When one differently abled young man needed help, his friend went above and beyond.
When Brandon and Tanner met, Brandon was using a hand-push wheelchair. The chair was becoming kind of a pain for Brandon as he had to push his way down the halls from class to class around Caddo Hills High School. "My arms would get really tired and I would have to stop and take rests," said Brandon.
Sometimes when they were together, Brandon would ask Tanner to push his wheelchair. Tanner was happy to help. Most often, Tanner would offer to help and he noticed how hard using this wheelchair was on his friend. Tanner thought that if his friend had had an electric wheelchair, life would be easier for him. But Brandon's family was unable to afford it. Seeing how much his friend struggled in his wheelchair, Tanner made up his mind to do something about it. "He's just been a really good friend and I wanted to do him a favor. I just felt like I needed to do it and I wanted to do it," Tanner explained.
Then the enthusiastic(热心的) high school student became devoted to getting his friend a wheelchair. He got an after-school job at an auto repair shop and he worked there every afternoon. In order to help his friend out, Tanner worked part-time for two years. All of the money he earned went towards saving for a self-powered wheelchair. That moment finally came in late February, when he would present Brandon with a life-changing gift during the school day.

Dear Mr. Brown,
First of all, on behalf of the Student Union, I am honored to express our most sincere thanks to you.
We benefited a lot from the lecture that you gave us during this year's English Cultural Festival. The lecture left a deep impression on every student present. They showed great interest in the content of the lecture and enjoyed it very much. In the past few days, we have received a flood of emails from the audience telling us how your lecture has helped them correct the mistaken belief that English is only a tool.
It would be great if there were more lectures like this in the future! Finally, thank you again for your wonderful lecture!
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
47.答案:
At the beginning, Tanner had planned on giving Brandon all the money he had saved. That way, Brandon could buy whatever wheelchair he liked. On second thought, Tanner decided to give him an electric wheelchair as a present, in case he declined the money. With the help of his mother, Tanner found a wheelchair in an online store, which he thought would be the perfect gift for his friend. After buying the wheelchair, Tanner gave it to Brandon during the school day.
Brandon cried when he first got the wheelchair. He was so grateful to his friend for the amazing act of kindness. "Wow, I can't believe he did that for me!" Brandon said, adding that it had been his dream to own an electric wheel-chair. Now, it was easier for him to get around, and he wouldn't ever have to worry about his arms getting tired out again. Tanner was happy that his friend liked it. "I will help him as long as he needs me," Tanner said, wishing more people in the world to care for the disabled.
