Most people believe that fish only eat and swim. But, if you’ve ever had the opportunity to meet an Oscar fish you probably know better than that.
Oscars have become a popular fish species in recent years since they’re known to recognize their owners. They can have a trusting nature within them, which is seen in some Oscars who will affectionately rub up against their owner’s arm when they perform tank maintenance.
Oscars create a bond with their owners, and they are probably going to let you pet them at some point of the relationship. Some will even eat from the owner’s hand. That’s very different behavior than most other fish varieties display. They not only bond with their owners, but they also bond with other fish as well. They even bond with varieties of fish different than its own. They develop strong relationships with one another, and they are impacted by the death of the other.
They are easy to take care of because they will eat almost anything and will spit out whatever food they don’t like. They eat crickets and earthworms. They have also been known to eat small kitchen scraps as well. You just have to watch out what other types of fish you put in the tank with your Oscar, since if the fish is small enough, the Oscar will eat it.
Oscars have an endearing personality, but they are aggressive fish.Oscars find themselves in a competition of sorts with other fish, and they can easily fight for no apparent reason. It’s hard to predict an Oscar’s temperament, since each of them has a distinct personality.
The Oscar is known to grow up to 12-18 inches long, so it requires a large tank. Each Oscar requires about 80-100 gallons of water in the tank, so be prepared to move them to a larger tank as they get older.Oscars can be as sweet as puppies and very affectionate.Get to know your Oscar and its unique personality, and see for yourself how loving it can be.

The Cherokee Indians (切罗基族——北美印第安人之一族) of the early 1800’s were intelligent and hard working people. Most could read. Some lived in log cabins and others lived in large houses.A Cherokee named Sequoyah made an alphabet for his language so it could be read and written as well as spoken.
As early as 1802 the state of Georgia and the federal government had signed an agreement with the Cherokee Indians that stated that the Indian land belonged to Georgia. In 1829 President Jackson had a “removal bill” introduced to Congress. The bill said that all Cherokee Indians would have to move to a reservation (保留区 ) in Oklahoma.Georgia took the Cherokee Indians’ land and began to break it into small pieces to be given to the white settlers. All contracts between Cherokee Indians and whites were canceled.Anyone owing money to a Cherokee Indian didn’t have to pay back. Some whites attacked and burned the Cherokee Indians’ homes. The Cherokee Indian leaders were arrested and their homes were taken away.
In 1835 two Cherokees who were not elected leaders of the tribe signed a treaty (协议) with the federal government. The treaty arranged for the Cherokee Indians to move away from Georgia. The treaty was not good because no elected leader had signed it.More than 16,000 Cherokees signed a petition (请愿书) asking that the treaty should be canceled.President Jackson refused. In 1838 ten thousand American soldiers were sent to Georgia to remove the Cherokees from the land they had lived on as long as anyone could remember. They were taken to a makeshift prison until the trip west could begin.

Two men, both seriously ill, shared the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the only window of the room. The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their experience in the army, and where they had been on vacation.Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods when his world would be broadened and enlivened (使有活力) by all the activities and colours of the world outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats.Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers of every colour.Grand old trees made everything around more attractive, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in great detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.Although the other man couldn’t hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window pictured it with descriptive words.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate (适当的), the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch (交换), and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it for himself.
Paragraph 1:
Slowly and painfully, he made his greatest possible efforts to look out of the window beside the bed.
Paragraph 2:
“The man was blind and could not even see the wall.Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”the nurse answered.
Paragraph 1:
Slowly and painfully, he made his greatest possible effort to look out of the window beside the bed. When eagerly looking out of the window, he was frozen with his mouth open wide at the sight of the wall.Yes, he could see nothing but a blank wall.He couldn’t believe his eyes, wondering what had happened.Gradually, he calmed down and lost himself in thought.Sitting there alone, he wondered why the former roommate spent time describing the lively scenes during the one hour periods. After a while, the nurse came in to take his temperature.“Miss, my former roommate pictured wonderful things outside the window to me every time, when he sat up and looked out of the window. But in fact there is only a wall outside.I just can’t understand why he did so.” the man asked.
Paragraph 2:
“The man was blind and could not even see the wall.Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.” the nurse answered. He was again shocked and suddenly enlightened, feeling deeply moved.Yes, he realized he had actually lived for those periods! He remembered how much he enjoyed the happy moments his roommate brought him, which rid him of the dark clouds in his life.He felt grateful for his roommate’s special encouragement.PAGE

In the USA, driving laws differ somewhat from state to state and considerably from what you are used to. Here is a list of some important differences.
Speed Limits
Speed limits are designated in miles per hour (MPH), not kilometers. One mile equals 1.6093 kilometers.Within cities the speed limit is usually 25 mph.Major streets with two or more lines may post a higher limit of 35 mph, but you should assume a 25 mph limit unless you see a sign with a higher limit.Highways have a speed limit of 55 mph, with some interstate highways posting a higher limit of 65 mph.Fines for speeding are heavy and can result in higher insurance fees and license suspension (扣留).
Driving on the Right
Unlike the UK, some countries in Asia, and in Australia, in the United States cars drive on the right side of the road, and steering wheels (方向盘) are located on the left side of the car.
Even if you don’t drive a car, you need to be aware of this rule.Every year a few international students are hit by cars because they step off the roadsides into the path of oncoming traffic. On most streets cars will be coming from your left, not your right.
Insurance
Most states require you to maintain certain minimum levels of insurance on your car in case you are involved in an accident. The insurance covers your liability (责任) for damage to other cars and injuries caused to all the people involved in the accident. We strongly recommend getting insurance that covers more than the legal minimum. You can also get collision (碰撞) insurance to cover the cost of fixing your car and theft insurance in case the car is stolen, but this is only worthwhile for a new car or a model of recent years. If you don’t have car insurance, you won’t be able to register the car.

For many years there’s been a debate about rewarding our children.Does is work?Is it effective? If so, what kind of rewards should be used
To use rewards, we establish a standard with our kids and give them something for meeting this standard.Punishment is given out in much the same way, but it’s used when certain standards of performance, behavior, etc.have not been met.
The problem here is not that rewards and punishments don’t have immediate results. They often do have quick results.Kids often will become more obedient when threatened with punishment, and work hard when promised a valuable reward. But the problem is what happens when you aren’t around.
To develop responsible, self disciplined kids, parents need to promote certain ideas. One of these ideas is that everyone participates in and helps in your family, even if you’re not crazy about helping.Another idea is that there can be enjoyment in doing any task if we choose to make it so.When a task is for a worthy cause (our family can enjoy the house more because I help clean it), and when parents are cheerful about their chores (日常事务), this message can have a big impact (影响).
This is how we help our kids develop an intrinsic (内在的) sense of responsibility. When our children develop this responsibility, they’ll be more disciplined, and they’ll control their emotions better. When we give rewards to our kids, we reduce this intrinsic sense of responsibility. We also raise children who may temporarily perform to a certain standard, but who aren’t likely to continue the performance without the carrot lying in front of them. These kinds of values must come from inside them.

A.stating his own idea
B.presenting some facts

D.asking some questions

6.Before using rewards, parents should ________.
A.be aware of what they will do
B.set a standard for children
C.prepare something as a reward
D.think about the possible results
7.According to Paragraph 4, ________.
A.parents should promote certain ideas to help children develop responsibility
B.children should be responsible for their self discipline
C.children should help build a good family atmosphere
D.no children will adapt to society without their parents’ help
故选A项。
8.It can be concluded from the last paragraph that ________.
A.giving rewards to kids is not the best policy
B.rewarding kids can strengthen their self discipline
C.kids must learn how to control their emotions
D.it is important to help kids develop self respect
Living with a roommate can often seem complex and overwhelming (压倒性的), especially in high school. Fortunately, being a good roommate boils down to a few simple rules:
Be respectful. Respect comes in all forms in a roommate relationship. __1__ Respect the requests your roommate makes of you, even if you think those requests are foolish. Respect your roommate’s things, from his computer to his milk on the desk. And respect him as a person.
__2__ Sometimes, your roommate may want to talk to you about something he has going on in his personal life. Pay attention to him when he’s communicating with you and truly hear what he has to say (even if it is through silence).
Be clear and communicative. If you are feeling overwhelmed and just need to talk to your roommate for a little while, ask if he has a few minutes. __3__ It’s important for you to communicate with your roommate in a genuine, clear, constructive way as often as possible.
Be honest. Trying to ignore little problems will just make them grow until they get unavoidable. Be honest about what you need as a roommate. __4__ It’s much better to be honest from the beginning than further damage a situation.
Be generous. __5__ Generosity comes in all kinds of forms. Offer to help in little ways, from adding their towel to your laundry to saving a piece of pizza from your own delivery (投递) when your roommate’s up late somewhere else studying. A little generosity can go a long way without costing you too much money or effort.
A.Be a good listener.

2.选A 由本段“Pay attention to him ... truly hear what he has to say ...”
4.选G G项的admit it与本段的主旨Be honest呼应。
