Many traffic jams leave drivers puzzled as they finally reach the end of a tailback to find no visible cause for their delay. Now, a team of mathematicians have found the answer by developing a model to show how major delays occur on our roads, with no obvious cause.
The model showed that a driver, slowing down below a critical speed (临界速率) when reacting to unexpected events, forces the car behind to slow down further and the next car back to reduce its speed still further. The result of this is that several miles back, cars would finally come to a stop, with drivers unaware of the reason for their delay. The model predicts that this is a very typical situation on a busy highway (above 15 vehicles per km). The jam moves backwards through the traffic creating a so called “backward travelling wave”, which drivers may encounter many miles upstream, several minutes after it was caused.
Drivers and policy makers have not previously known why jams like this occur, though many have put it down to the sheer volume of traffic. While this clearly plays a part in this new theory, the main issue is around the smoothness of traffic flow. According to the model, heavy traffic will not automatically lead to jams but can be smooth flowing. This model takes into account the time delay in drivers’ reactions, which leads to drivers’ braking more heavily than would have been necessary if they had identified and reacted to a problem ahead a second earlier.
When a driver taps the brake, the traffic may come to a full standstill several miles behind. It really matters how hard a driver brakes — a slight braking from a driver who has identified a problem early will allow the traffic flow to remain smooth. Heavier braking, usually caused by a driver reacting late to a problem, can affect traffic flow for many miles.
1.From the passage, we learn that ________.
A.the new theory lacks evidence and is not convincing
B.driving at low speed leads to traffic jams
C.many drivers don’t know how to deal with unexpected events
D.drivers are often unaware of the reason why a traffic jam happens

2.Traffic jams can be avoided when ________.
A.mathematicians develop a model
B.drivers react to problems early
C.there is a “backward travelling wave”
D.there is a visible cause of the delay
3.The underlined word “this” in the third paragraph refers to ________.
A.the “backward travelling wave”
B.the smoothness of traffic flow

The eight year old Carol lived with her father David, mother May and elder brother Rob. The little family happily lived in a beautiful village surrounded with beautiful nature. The village was at the foot of a mountain, with beautiful views of the snowy mountain. The family survived on growing seasonal plants and trees. Their life is totally surrounded by nature and beauty.
While they lived a very happy life, Carol did not love the beautiful atmosphere of the village. She really wanted to move into the city and enjoy the city life. She wanted to shop, move around the city, watch movies, and eat in fantastic restaurants and cafes, etc.
However, there was hardly any chance that Carol’s family moved to the city as they had everything in the village.
One day, Carol fell asleep during the early noon and she had a sound sleep. Of course, she had a strange dream. She saw her grandmother in her dream as a fairy and her deceased grandmother granted her a wish. Carol requested her that she should love to enjoy the city life as she always desired.
Grandmother understood the desire of Carol, but still wanted to convince her that the peaceful village life is better than the city life.
She told Carol, “Baby, you cannot have access to fresh fruits and vegetables from plants as you have at your home. You cannot breathe fresh air. You cannot play with animals. You can hardly find any trees. You will not find peace as you see here! Do you still want to go to the city?”
Without hearing the concerns, Carol asked her grandmother to grant the wish. Grandmother granted her wish, but with a condition. Carol was told that she would only have 6 hours to spend in the city. Later, she would return to the village. Carol agreed.
Paragraph 1:
Carol then found herself in the city with her friends.
Paragraph 2:
Carol’s brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up.
Paragraph 1:
Carol then found herself in the city with her friends. Carol and her friends went to watch movies. After that they ate delicious food in a restaurant and shopped in a huge mall. Carol was happy that she had the chance to experience the life in the city. Yet at the same time, she understood that everything told by her grandmother was true in the city. There was no peace and no silence; the city life was fast and rushing. The air quality is not satisfying. She could hardly find any animal or even a tree.
Paragraph 2:
Carol’s brother Rob was calling her for lunch and Carol woke up. She recalled what happened just now in her dream and realized that her life in the village with her family was far more wonderful than the city life. Carol understood that she was having a more joyful life. She shared her dream with her family while enjoying the fresh fruits and vegetables, and they laughed together. Carol also developed love for plants, animals and beautiful nature.PAGE

It brings a whole new meaning to the term “windowshopping”.
Ocado is launching a “virtual (虚拟的)” high street shop with pictures of groceries. Customers scan the barcodes (条形码) of products they want to buy using their smartphones — and the goods are delivered to the front door. The new “shopping window” is being launched in central London and could be rolled_out across the country.
Ocado says the novel project could be a taste of the future of shopping as busy commuters (上下班往返的人) are able to order their groceries without being forced to pack and carry home their items.
It comes after a similar trial by Tesco carried out in a South Korean subway. The supermarket giants created a virtual store consisting of posters of shelves stocked with goods. After the success of the trial, Tesco is reportedly planning on bringing the virtual supermarket to Britain.
The Ocado wall will operate on a trial basis at the One New Change shopping centre until September 1. Customers have to download the Ocado On The Go app. before they can buy products from the “window shop”. If the trial proves successful, Ocado plans to set up new walls in other empty shop units around the UK.
Ocado co founder Jason Gissing said:“We hope this trial is a hit and, based on its success, we’ll be looking at options around continuing this ‘virtual window shopping’ approach in other places.”
Ocado spokesman Ben Lovett added: “The shop will be a printed window display featuring some of our most popular items. Barcodes underneath will let you scan the items and drop them into your basket on the app. Then you simply book a delivery and get on with your day.”
Ocado has never launched a “real” store and it is the first time it has had a physical presence on the high street. A spokesman for the online grocer said 15% of Ocado orders are now placed on mobile phones.

It’s a popular dish eaten by millions of people. It’s a symbol of wealth and power and is often served at weddings and banquets. It’s shark fin (鱼翅) soup, a traditional Chinese dish that is served in restaurants worldwide. To satisfy the growing demand for the soup, fishermen kill as many as 70 million sharks each year — just for their fins.
That’s a big reason shark populations are falling fast. The numbers of the largest sharks — including the famous great white shark — have dropped by 90 percent since the 1950s. Scientists say that about one third of all shark species are at risk of becoming extinct.
American government signed the Shark Conservation Act in January. This law bans any U. S. boat from catching or transporting sharks without their fins attached. A bill introduced in California in February would take shark conservation a step further. It would ban the sale and possession of shark fins. That would include serving shark fin soup. Hawaii passed a similar ban last year.
Scientists say the practice of finning is a major cause of the collapse in shark populations. In finning, fishermen slice off the fins of live sharks and throw the bodies back into the water. Without their fins, the sharks sink to the ocean floor and die. Sharks are more vulnerable (脆弱的) to overfishing than other types of fish. They grow slowly and have fewer offspring than other fish do. Sharks are often captured and killed faster than they can repopulate the waters.
Finning is also big business. Fishermen sell the fleshy fins to fish markets and producers of shark fin soup, mainly in China. A pound of fins might sell for as much as $ 200.
Why should we care about protecting these fearsome meat eaters As the top ocean predators (食肉动物), sharks keep the populations of other fish from growing too large. If sharks were to be wiped out, their usual prey would reproduce unchecked. That could throw the ocean food chain off balance.“Removing the top level predators in the ocean has significant effects on its ecosystem,” said biologist John McCosker.

6.What’s the possible result of overfishing sharks
A.Disturbing the balance of food chain of mankind.
B.Damaging the oceanic ecological balance.
C.Causing fishermen to be out of work.
D.Decreasing the number of other fish.
7.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage
A.Sharks live on other fish in the ocean.
B.Shark fin soup is the symbol of Chinese food culture.
C.Nowadays sharks are endangered.

8.It can be inferred that ________.
