Public bookshelves are appearing across Germany on street corners, city squares and in suburban supermarkets. In these free for all libraries, people can grab whatever they want to read, and leave behind anything they want for others. There’s no need to register, no due date, and you can take or give as many as you want.“This project is aimed at everyone who likes to read. It is open for everybody,” Michael Aubermann, one of the organizers of the free book exchange said.
The western city’s latest public shelf was put up next to Bayenturm. It is the fourth free shelf that Aubermann’s group, the Cologne Citizen’s Foundation, has placed outside. “We set up our other outdoor shelves last year and it’s been working really well,” said Aubermann. The public bookshelves, which are usually financed by donations and cared for by local volunteer groups, have appeared independently of each other in many cities, suburbs and villages. Each shelf holds around 200 books and it takes about six weeks for a complete turnover, with all the old titles replaced by new ones.
Even commercial book stores and online book sellers seem to support the idea of free book exchanges. “We see this project rather as a sales promotion than as competition,” said Elmar Muether. “If books are present everywhere, it helps our business, too.”
So far, the Cologne book group has had few problems with damage or other problems. Aubermann said, “Propaganda (宣传) is the only kind of literature we do not allow here.”
At another bookshelf in the Bayenthal neighborhood, the lower shelves are reserved for children’s literature only. “It is important that we make it easy for everyone to participate in this ‘reading culture on the street’ — from old readers to kids to immigrants, ” Aubermann said.
While most of the shelves have so far been put up in upscale_neighborhoods,_Aubermann and the 20 volunteers who help look after the project are planning to put up future shelves in poor neighborhoods, where citizens often don’t have as much access to literature.

Life can sometimes seem like an endless series of exhibitions. For those of us involved in the art world, there are times when we’re constantly visiting gallery (画廊) after gallery, taking in as much as possible and getting to know the works of artists from far and wide. But there are some artists whose works consistently stand out. Some artists’ works stay in the thought and heart of an audience long after the show is over. I’ve noticed over the years that these are often the artists who have understood fully the skill of telling the story behind their art. These artists aren’t just selling paintings — they’re selling an experience.
Roxanna Kibsey is one of these artists. Her paintings are often exact description of frozen tundra (冻原) or autumn trees — so bright that they could nearly burn a hole in the canvas. When I met her at an exhibition she couldn’t wait to tell me about the place in her paintings. “Where I grew up we had nine months of winter every year. It’s really quite a tough place,” she said. She relived a part of her childhood when we chatted in front of her painting. The image brought to my mind memories of driving through the snow covered countryside during my own first winter in Canada. I could almost hear the crunching ice under my feet as she described to me the countryside she grew up in.
Businessmen may have their elevator_pitch,_but artists, too, need their 30 second story which rolls freely off the tongue. That’s why it’s so important that for each piece you might be exhibiting, you can conjure up (唤起) a story behind it, and tell that story to your audience in a way that helps them connect with your work, and makes them want to buy a piece.

When Debbie Macomber decided to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, she rented a typewriter, put it on the kitchen table, and began typing each morning before the kids went to school. When the kids came home, she moved the typewriter and made them dinner. When they went to bed, she moved it back and typed some more. For two years, Debbie followed this routine.Supermom had become a struggling writer and she was loving every minute of it.
One night, however, her husband, said to her, “Honey, I’m sorry, but you’re not bringing in any income. We can’t do this anymore. We can’t survive on just what I make.”
That night, her heart broken and her mind too busy to let her sleep. She stared at the ceiling in their darkened bedroom.Debbie knew — with all of the responsibilities of keeping up a house and looking after four kids — that working 40 hours a week would leave her no time to write.
Seeing her despair, her husband woke up and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I really think I could have made it as a writer, I really do.”
Wayne was silent for a long time, and then said, “All right, honey, go for it.”

And Wayne All that sacrifice in support of his wife paid off handsomely. He got to retire at age 50 and now spends his time building an airplane in the basement of their 7,000 square foot mansion.

Lorena parted the curtain in her living room and looked out onto the wet street. She was relieved the sunlight appeared. If it didn’t stop raining it would ruin her day. Her mother had promised to drive her to Fashion Fair if it were sunny. Lorena was desperate to go there because she had to replace a Nike jacket.
Earlier that Wednesday afternoon, Eddie, the most popular seventh grader, had given Lorena his jacket and asked her to keep an eye as he would play basketball in a hurry. Lorena was quite happy to be of help.
During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on Eddie’s jacket, Lorena folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly. She felt sick opening the frog’s belly.
When the bell rang Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home would leave ten minutes after school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and drove away when Lorena looked out of the window and saw Eddie. “The jacket!” she screamed. She shot from her seat and ran up to the driver. “You’ve got to stop! I forgot Eddie’s jacket!” “Who’s Eddie I don’t know Eddie, ” the driver said crossly. “Sit down.”
All that evening she was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn’t made them dissect (解剖) frogs, she wouldn’t have been so absent minded. The next day Lorena rushed from the bus to the biology room. The jacket was not there!
“How can I ever tell Eddie?” she thought, closing her eyes. She spent most of her break and lunch period in the rest room, brushing her hair and worrying. On Friday she stayed home to avoid Eddie. She told her mother she wanted to go shopping to buy her a gift for her birthday, which was the next week. Actually, she wanted to buy a Nike jacket with her life savings at Fashion Fair.
Paragraph 1:
Mom drove Lorena to Fashion Fair and left, asking her not to waste money.

Paragraph 2:
Lorena was about to leave when she saw Eddie in his Nike jacket.

There’s a saint(圣人) of animals. A saint of lost things. And now there’s even a saint of computer geeks (电脑怪客). But have you ever heard of Amma, the saint of hugs
Okay, so she hasn’t made it into the Catholic Church’s list yet, but we firmly believe that Mata Amritanandamayi, an Indian woman known as Amma, is as canon worthy as anyone we’ve ever heard of. For over 30 years, Amma has been traveling the globe, giving hugs to everyone she meets, asking nothing in return. Though she considers herself spiritual, she does not advocate any particular religion — her message is love, pure and simple.
Sure, this may sound a lot like that Free Hugs guy in Australia, but we have a feeling he probably swiped his idea from Amma in the first place. After all, no matter how many hugs he’s given in the last few years, he’ll have a long way to go if he wants to catch up to her — to date,Amma has given over 26 million hugs, or “darshan”, as she calls the experience.
So why does she do it As Amma told BBC News, “Love is a very special, very uplifting feeling. That’s what I’m trying to give people. It’s like visiting a perfume factory. Consciously or unconsciously you will carry that fragrance (芬芳) around with you.”
Amma has built a worldwide network of followers who can’t get enough of her hugs. One fan flew all the way across the globe from Australia to London to meet with her, and waited with hundreds of others to experience the pure joy of darshan. In each city she visits, Amma doles out (发放) hugs all day long, often until as late as two or three in the morning, until everyone’s gotten a turn.
Though Amma receives no money for the experience, she is the founder of a charity called Mata Amritanan damayi Math. Many of her followers contribute money to the organization in appreciation of Amma’s hugs. With those funds, the organization has built more than 36,000 houses. Or should we call them the houses that hugs built

be polite/impolite to sb.
