Ⅳ.阅读理解
After a full roast turkey lunch, it is traditional to try to work off the calories with a long walk in the great outdoors. Now scientists have shown that “interacting with nature”, even in the middle of winter, boosts memory and concentration levels. In fact, just an hour walking through countryside increases the brain’s performance by a fifth. In contrast, a walk through busy streets, perhaps shopping for sales bargains, has no beneficial effect on the brain at all.
The research was carried out at the University of Michigan. One group was sent out on a 50 minute walk through streets lined with office buildings and busy with traffic while the other took a secluded, tree lined route. Afterwards the volunteers’ mental skills were assessed in a series of tests, and compared to their performance before setting off on the walks. Results showed that those who took the “nature route” increased their short term memory by 20 percent. But there were no changes for the better for those who walked down city streets.
It is thought that the countryside is “restorative” because it allows people to switch off, while walking in towns and cities requires attention.
Marc Berman, a researcher at the University of Michigan, pointed out walking in the wild can help cure mental fatigue (疲劳). “I would highly recommend going away for a little break in the country or simply going for a walk in a park in a town, ” he said. “Our research has shown that this really is not subjective — the effects on memory and attention are real.”
The research, published in the journal Psychological Science, also found memory and attention were increased after simply looking at pictures of nature rather than photos of built up areas.
Mr Berman added, “Interacting with nature can have similar effects as meditating (冥想). You don’t hear people say, ‘Well, I got really tired looking at this beautiful waterfall.’Nature does not make any demands of you.”

Ⅳ.阅读理解
There is little doubt that humans used herbs (药草) for healing well before anything could be written about them.
Many authorities recognize Hippocrates as the “father of medicine” for the European tradition. The treatment of the Hippocratic physician reflected his fundamental approach. It was the treatment of an individual, not a disease, and the treatment of the whole body, not any part of it. Treatment was based on the fundamental idea that nature had a strong healing force of its own, and that the main role of the physician was to assist nature in this healing process, rather than to direct it. The main ally of the physician in assisting nature in this process was diet. Only if diet failed were drugs used, and surgery was a last resort.
The great philosopher Aristotle was the son of a medical man and a medical man himself, but his main influence on the development of European medicine was through his student, Theophrastus, called the “father of botany (植物学)”. He was the first known author in Europe of a classification system for plants with accompanying comments about their medicinal value. He described about 450 different medicinal plants. However, this text has not come down through history, and is only noted in later commentaries.
The first document of herbal medicine that is regarded as a medical classic in the European tradition was De Materia Medica by Dioscorides. Dioscorides was a surgeon accompanying the army. He traveled far, collected much information, and gained considerable medical experience. Dioscorides had recorded herb knowledge for 600 plants. The book’s pictures were considered the only authoritative ones for European medicinal plants for over 1, 000 years. The work was translated into English in 1655, and continued to be the primary reference on European herbs.
Greek medicine continued to improve for several decades after Dioscorides, but it eventually began to stagnate.

The pursuit of happiness can be a lifelong search for some, but researchers believe they may have found a key factor in feeling a greater overall sense of well being.
Nottingham Trent University researchers found that the more an individual identified with a particular group, such as family, in their local community or through a hobby, the happier they were with their life.
“Our findings suggest that thinking more about one’s group life could have significant benefits for an overall sense of well being,” says Dr Juliet Wakefield, a psychologist at Nottingham Trent University.
“We tend to identify with groups that share our values, interests and life priorities, as well as those that support us in times of crisis, and we can see how this would link to happiness. Our work taps into knowledge that is deep within all of us. But we often forget it due to the fast paced and achievement focused nature of modern life. So, to be your best self, you tend to require the support of others.”
They studied how 4,000 participants felt connected to certain groups, and then measured the impact this had upon their levels of happiness.
She adds:“It’s important to note that identifying with a group isn’t the same as membership, though. You can be a member of a group with which you feel no connection at all. It’s that subjective sense of belonging that’s crucial for happiness.”
“Healthcare professionals should encourage people to join groups that they are interested in, or which promote their values and ideals, as well as advise people to maintain association with groups they already belong to. Simple social interventions such as this could in turn help to reduce NHS expenditure and prevent future ill health.”
参考范文:
The passage is about the secret of happiness. It’s found that individuals who feel a strong sense of belonging to social groups are much happier.(要点1) According to Juliet, people tend to require others’ support in hard days. (要点2) However, she stresses what really counts is the subjective sense of belonging to a group, not just membership. A pill that fights snoring (打鼾) could be the secret to a good night’s sleep for millions of couples. Initial results suggest the new drug could be the first pill to handle sleep apnea (呼吸暂停). It may also help reduce the risks of high blood pressure and heart disease linked with sleep apnea.
The condition occurs as a result of the narrowing of the airways. As sleep begins, the muscles in the airway relax. For most people this does not cause a problem, but for those with sleep apnea it leads to a complete loss of strength that stops breathing for at least ten seconds. Once the brain realizes breathing has stopped, it sends out a signal for the airway muscles to contract again.
Treatment normally begins with trying to lose weight. But many patients end up needing a treatment called CPAP, which includes wearing a special mask over the nose and mouth during sleep. Other equipment includes special dental splints (牙夹板), which are worn at night. These treatments are very effective but don’t actually cure the condition.
A pill is regarded by some experts as a perfect method of snoring treatment. The new drug, called Qnexa, was developed as a weight loss medicine. Researchers noticed an added benefit when they tested volunteers to measure the effects on sleep apnea. Over the course of the trial, which included men and women aged 30 to 65, the number of times their sleep was interrupted by snoring related problems dropped from an average of 46 times an hour to just 14. Meanwhile, they lost an average of 10 percent of their body weight and saw a great drop in blood pressure.
Professor Jim Horne said, “Around 50 percent of obese people suffer sleep apnea to some degree. When they lie down in bed, their muscles relax and the fat around their neck presses the airway even further. It’s possible this drug helps by causing weight loss or making the throat muscles tighter. We won’t know whether it’s beneficial to habitual snorers who aren’t overweight until more research has been carried out.”
