I had an opportunity to teach tennis at a five star hotel in Nevis, a small island in the Caribbean Sea. After that, my friend Clayton and I flew into Panama City for a surfing (冲浪) outing at a surfing camp in the bay of Chiriqui, whose tourism is booming. To get there, we had to take my tennis bags on and off several buses and boats. After eight hours of travel we finally arrived. The camp was perfect, and the accommodations were not bad. We had an unbelievable week there!
On our return trip, when we got to the bus station, we learned that our bus had been delayed for 2.5 hours. The sun was beating down on us.
As we walked over to the shaded area, a couple of kids started throwing rocks at me. I opened a can of tennis balls. They stopped and took an interest in the balls. I had a special racket (球拍) with me. It had the strings cut out and replaced with a net, which is perfect for my hotel teaching. I got them to throw the balls into the net. They seemed to enjoy that. Then an older boy got interested, to whom I gave another racket to hit the ball into the net of the catching racket. I showed him how to position and hold the racket. Soon, their bus arrived, and they were on their way.
But families from across the street came over and wanted their 10 minute tennis lesson, too. The other passengers waiting for the bus each got a lesson. Eventually, restaurant workers next door and the bus terminal clerk invited me to give them a lesson, too. They learnt well and were having a great time. And so was I. In what seemed like no time, our bus arrived. Satisfied with what I did, I changed my shirt, and made it back to Panama City.

On a freezing January morning, Jonny Benjamin, then a 20 year old college student, climbed on the edge of Waterloo Bridge in London. That morning, Jonny escaped from a mental health hospital, where he’d been diagnosed (诊断) with schizo affective disorder. He headed straight to the bridge, being convinced that his disease was a life sentence.
Hundreds of people passed by. Only one man called Neil Laybourn, then 25, calmly and quietly walked to Jonny’s side.
“You’re alright, man Why are you sitting on the bridge?”
At first Jonny wanted Neil to leave him alone, but something in Neil’s calm, down to earth manner struck_a_chord. Jonny felt faith, like he could talk to him.
“It’s cold here. Why not have some coffee in a warm cafe Everything will be OK.” For the first time after the diagnosis Jonny felt perhaps it really might be OK. He climbed back.

Jonny ended up back in hospital. Eventually, he was well enough to return to university and finish his degree. Over the next six years, Jonny often thought about the stranger who had talked him round. Eager to thank him in person, he posted an online message nicknaming the good man Mike. His FindMike post was shared millions of times around the world, as far as Canada.

New study shows that when teachers participate in a training program focused on prosocial classroom behavior, their students are better able to control their emotions (情绪), and that children who can regulate emotions are more likely to be academically successful.
For the study, which appears in Prevention Science, researchers looked at more than 100 teachers and 1,817 students from kindergarten to third grade to see if teachers could support students’ emotional and behavioral growth through the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management (IYTCM) program.
The program uses videos and training sessions, along with role playing and coaching, to help teachers learn management skills such as using behavior specific praise, building positive relationships with students, and considering how to reduce poor behavior. Teachers in the training group increased their positive interactions with students by 64 percent compared with 53 percent for teachers in the control group without the training.
“Emotional regulation is the ability to recognize what behavior is appropriate in the present situation,” says Wendy Reinke, professor in the College of Education at the University of Missouri. “For example, a student might have difficulty controlling the feeling of anger if he or she gets annoyed with another student. But under this program, the teacher encourages them to move to a different spot in the classroom, effectively teaching them that sometimes stepping away and taking a break is a good way to calm down and manage that feeling.”
After one school year of using the program in classrooms, students had improved their social ability and ability to regulate their emotions. These improvements resulted in an increase in the tests for students in Incredible Years classrooms vs. students in control classrooms. And this classroom management approach can help reduce the risk for struggling learners early on, which could help prevent more accumulative support needs in a child’s future.
12.What do the teachers do in the IYTCM program
A.Learn how to identify poor behavior of kids.
B.Take care of kids from kindergarten to third grade.
C.Play different roles to learn how to manage kids.
D.Offer the researchers advice on emotional control.
13.What do Wendy Reinke’s words suggest
A.Now it is hard for students to control their anger.
B.Few can realize their behavior is unfit for a situation.
C.The program will show how to handle troublesome kids.
D.A calm manner is an effective way to handle problems.
14.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Study results of the program are entirely unexpected.
B.Kids in the program will have a more promising future.
C.The program advances the students’ academic performance.
D.Students improve themselves shortly through the program.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Teacher Training Helps Kids Regulate Emotions
B.A Positive Attitude Is Needed for Teaching
C.The Future of a Child Is Determined by Teachers
D.Kids’ Feelings Deserve More Attention from Teachers

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
American English began in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 17th century, the English language was brought to North America by colonists from England. They used the language spoken in England, that is, Elizabethan English, the language used by Shakespeare.
In order to exploit new resources in America, British colonists settled down there and from 1607 to 1732 set up thirteen colonies, including Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In these thirteen areas, English was a common language used by all people. The first colonists established the English form in America.
As time went by, the English language gradually changed on both sides of the Atlantic. Foreigners longing for wealth set foot on the coastal area to trade. Americans adopted many words from foreign languages and invented numerous new words to meet their commercial needs.
Following American Independence, famous people like Thomas Jefferson, the President, began to consider that the country should have a language of its own. Noah Webster compiled (编撰) three elementary books on English. Later, he expressed the idea that as an independent nation, America should have a system of its own in language as well as in government. After the second half of the 19th century, many great writers such as Mark Twain helped the development of American English.
English in America has developed a character of its own, reflecting the life and the physical and social environment of the American people. Since the rise of the United States to a position of world importance, American English has been developing and changing. There is no doubt that American English will enrich the English language greatly. With the rapid development of modern mass media and the common needs of economic, cultural and political exchanges, American English will be more widely used in the world than British English.阶段仿真检测 (四) Unit 4 Law and order

参考范文:
Dear WWF,
There are wetlands in my hometown called Wucheng Town, on the lakeside of the Poyang Lake. When winter comes, many birds from the north fly to live here, including some rare and endangered ones, which adds a beautiful view to my hometown. However, the harm to the birds is various. Eggs are often picked up. Worse still, people even catch birds for meat.
Pollution from chemical factories is also a big problem. Wetland area is decreasing each year!
I strongly hope that WWF can cooperate with our local government to establish a reserve for migrating birds, and at the same time, reduce environmental pollution and protect wetlands!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节 (满分25分)

With the rapid development of modern mass media and the common needs of economic, cultural and political exchanges, American English will be more widely used in the world than British English.
