Passage 1
(2022贵州毕节三模)
The human face is a remarkable piece of work. The astonishing variety of facial features helps people recognise each other and is important to the formation of complex societies. So is the face’s ability to send emotional signals, whether through red cheeks or a false smile.People spend much of their waking lives reading faces,in the office and the courtroom as well as the bar and the bedroom, for signs of attraction, unfriendliness, trust and cheat. They also spend plenty of time trying to be in disguise.
Technology is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. In America, facial recognition is used by churches to track Christians’ attendance;in Britain,by shopkeepers to spot past thieves. This year Welsh police used it to arrest a suspect outside a football game.In China,it checks the identities of ride-hailing drivers, permits tourists to enter attractions and lets people pay for things with a smile.
Set against human skills, such applications might develop gradually. Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the Internet, obviously transform human abilities;facial recognition seems merely to encode them.Although faces are special to individuals, they are also public,so technology does not,at first sight, interrupt something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyse images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about fundamental changes to ideas of privacy, fairness and trust.
The face is not just a name-tag.It displays a lot of other information and machines can read that, too.Again, that promises benefits. Some firms are analyzing faces to provide diagnoses of rare genetic conditions or diseases.

Passage 2
(2022河南开封三模)
If someone said they’d pay you $1,800 to stay off social media for six years, would you do it Could you
Sivert Klefsaas did just that.“I thought it was awesome,” Sivert told CNN on Tuesday,“I thought,‘what’s 6 more years ’”
In 2016,Lorna Goldstrand Klefsaas challenged her 12-year-old son Sivert to stay off social media until he was 18.If he completed the challenge, she’d award him the cash on his eighteenth birthday. On February 19,2022,Sivert claimed his prize.
Lorna was inspired by a challenge she heard on the radio called the “16 for 16”,where a mother gave her daughter $1,600 when she turned 16 if she stayed off social media, she told CNN.She decided to up the ante (期限) to two extra years and $200 more.
Sivert said it wasn’t too difficult to live without social media, and he didn’t think about it much during the six years. As a 12-year-old,Sivert said he wasn’t using social media much anyway. The only app he had prior to the bet was Snapchat—which he deleted a day after trying it out.“I wouldn’t say there was ever a time when I thought I was about to break,” he said.“As it went on,it was more of a pride thing.” He also had his friends to keep him up to date on the latest information or trends.“I got to avoid all the unnecessary drama that was on there,” Sivert added.
Lorna said she never had to check for any sneakily downloaded apps.“He’s so competitive, and it was definitely more for proving a point,” she said.It also meant he had more time to focus on his grades and sports instead,Sivert told the reporter.
Now $1,800 richer,Sivert told CNN he hasn’t thought about what to buy (when he was 12,he joked he’d get a house),but it’ll likely be something for his dorm room at the University of Northwestern St.Paul, which he’ll attend in the fall.
After Sivert’s success,Lorna took to Meta to share the challenge. She said it was some of the best money she ever spent.Other parents have seemed interested in trying it out too,she told CNN.
“We are certainly not against social media, but it’s the healthy using of it,” Lorna noted.“It’s about not letting yourself get weighed down by it,or addicted to it,or affected by things that people post.” She added she thinks her son now has a “different perspective” on social media than he would have at age 12.

D.His casual attitude.
7.What’s the attitude of other parents towards the challenge
A.Indifferent. B.Objective.
C.Favorable. D.Doubtful.

Passage 3
(2022河南洛阳二模)
With researchers suggesting that sitting is the new smoking,sit-stand desks (SSD) have become a common tool to interrupt long sitting in an office or classroom environment. As this furniture becomes popular, conflicting opinions have arisen on whether they can work as successfully as they are intended.Dr.April Chambers from the University of Pittsburgh worked with teammates to gather data from 3 studies and published a review article listing present information on the benefits of SSDs.
“There has been a great deal of scientific research about sit-stand desks in the past few years, but we have only scratched the surface of this topic,” said Chambers.“I want to gather what we’ve known so far to figure out how we can use these desks to better benefit people in the workplace.”
This work was done with Dr.Nancy A.Baker from Tufts University. The review examines the effects of a sit-stand desk in the following aspects:behavior, physiological(生理的),work performance, psychological, discomfort, and posture.Their work showed that using an SSD effectively got participants to sit less and stand more and that the device made users more comfortable at work. However, many frustrations (沮丧) with SSDs came from the physiological outcomes.According to the review, physiological effects were the most studied, but there were no significant results with regards to fatness.
There are many considerations about using an SSD most effectively, such as desk height, monitor height, and the amount of time to stand.Chambers believes that the overall arrangement of the workplace or study place and the amount of work are two factors that should be further studied.
Chambers noted that present research is limited because many of the studies were done with young and healthy subjects who were asked to use the desk for a week or a month at most.Since some of the significant benefits are with heart health or muscle discomfort,it may be beneficial to perform additional studies with middle-aged or overweight workers.
9.The arguments about SSDs mainly lie in .
A.their side effects
B.their popularity
C.their practical results
D.their original intentions
10.Why did Chambers publish the article
A.To call on people to stand more.
B.To suggest ways to better use SSDs.
C.To contradict the existing opinions.
D.To find out the drawbacks of SSDs.
11.What’s the researchers’ attitude to SSDs’ physiological result
A.Disappointed. B.Content.
C.Positive. D.Indifferent.
12.What needs to be further examined according to Chambers
A.The height of the desk and the monitor.
B.The time people spend in standing.
C.Behavior and psychological aspects.
D.A broader range of the participants.
