1.Television is not only a way we learn about the world， but also a good entertainment. 电视不仅是我们了解世界的一种方法，而且也一种很好的娱乐。
not only...but also... 表示“不仅……而且”“既……又”。
(1)主要用于连接两个对等的成分；若连接两个成分作主语，其后谓语动词与靠近的主语保持一致。
She likes not only music but also sports.
她不但喜欢音乐而且喜欢运动。
Not only the students but also their teacher is enjoying the film. 不仅学生们在欣赏这部影片，他们的老师也在欣赏这部影片。
(2)not only...but also... 中的also 通常可以省略。
He not only washed the car，but polished it . 他不仅冲洗汽车，而且还擦拭了它。
(3)为了强调，可将not only 置于句首，此时其后的句子通常要用部分倒装的形式。
Not only has she been late three times， she has also done no work. 她不仅仅迟到了3次，还没干一点活。
Not only do they need clothing， but they are also short of water.
他们不但需要衣服，而且还缺水。
2.Instead of doing outdoor activities，they usually sit in front of the screen for hours enjoying the funny shows and cartoons without a break.
他们通常连续几小时坐在电视前欣赏有趣的节目和动画，而不是去户外活动。
(1)instead 作副词，是“代替”“顶替”的意思。
Mr. Wang is ill；I will take his class instead.
王先生病了，我将代替他上课。
(2)instead of 为介词短语，意思为“代替”，它后面可跟名词、代词、动名词、介词短语或形容词等。
I will clean the window instead of him.我要代替他去擦窗户。
We will skate instead of playing football.
我们要去滑冰而不是踢足球。
