Reading: What Do No.5 High School Students Do in their Free Time?
Teaching objectives:
Language:
The students will be exposed to the following vocabulary:
exercise (n./v.), ….percent of ...., the answer to, game show, it’s healthy for, spend time with sb, old habits die hard.
How often do you….?
Reading strategy:
Students will be able to scan for specific information.
Affection:
Students will be able to make adjustment of their present activities in their free time.
Students will do a survey and draw a pie chart and design a questionnaire by themselves.
Teaching procedures:
I. Lead-in:
1. Greeting: Self-introduction
T: I’m Coming. I come from NBFLS. It’s a very big school near Dongqian Lake. So it’s far away from the city center. But my hometown is Wenzhou, so I have to live in school. When other teachers go back home, I have to find sth interesting to do. Can you guess what I do for fun in my free time?
“Do you ………. in the free time?”--------------elicit the activities
2. Quick “ask and answer”.
T: Do you do the same things as me in your free time?
What do you do in your free time? How often do you ….?
3. Group work: Work in groups and find out the top 1 activity.
4. Make a conclusion.
T: In our class, _______ is the most popular free time activity.
II. Prediction:
1. What do high school students do in their free time? The same as you or different from you?
2. What are the most popular activity and the most unpopular one in their free time?
III. Read for the first time (Skimming)
1. What kind of article is it? (a story, a report or a prose ) How do you know that? (numbers)
2. What do most No. 5 High School students always do? (Most students use the Internet and watch TV every day.)
3. Is doing exercise popular in this school? (No, only fifteen percent exercise every day.)
IV. Read for the second time (Read paragraphs 2-4)
1. Finish the pie chart.
T: You can find so much data in the chart, but it’s really hard to remember. So we change them into a pie chart like this.
2. Report it out: Retell according to the pie chart
3. Are you surprised by the numbers?
Is the author surprised by the numbers? How do you know?
4. Opinion sharing: From the pie charts, do you think the students at No.5 are healthy? Why or why not?
V. Discussion:
T: Wow, your answer quite surprised me. I like your opinion. Now let’s see if the author share the same opinion with you.
1. What conclusion does the author make? Why does he think so?
2. What does the author want to tell the readers by “Old habits die hard.”? (You should change your habit as early as possible, that is, to exercise more often.)
3. Group work: Design the survey questionnaire according to the article.
T: Do you think it possible to ask all the students in the high school questions one by one? We can choose to ask 200 of them, but it’s still tiring to ask them. So when there are too many people, we can write the questions down and give each one the paper. We call this questionnaire.
4. Perfect the questionnaire. More questions should be included.
VI. Task: Do your own survey.
Step 1: Choose one activity. (How often do you…..?)
Step 2: Create questions. Step 3: Ask questions.
Step 4: Work out a pie chart based on the results.
Step 5: Report it out with the help of the chart.
Step 6: Make a conclusion
Tips:
1. Work out the question sheet like below in your own group.
2. The researcher go around and ask questions.
3. Other three members sit and answer other researchers’ questions.
4. Draw a pie chart together. And the reporter reports out.
