三、阅读单选
One of America’s most admired poets, W. S. Merwin, died in his sleep at his home in Hawaii, aged 91. His large number of mysterious and amazing lines made him and his poems well-known to the world. He was twice named the U.S. poet laureate(获奖者) and also won a National Book Award and two Pulitzer Prizes.
Merwin wrote a lot and for a long time. As a 5-year-old in New Jersey, he was interested in poems. When he was ready for college, the young Merwin got a scholarship(奖学金) to Princeton University. Then he went on to Europe, where he became a translator and soon a poet.
By the time Merwin published his fifth book, he was in desperation — worried about the environment and war. He wanted his writing to become more pressing( 紧迫的 ). To start, Merwin decided to do away with punctuation( 标点). He said “punctuation nails the poem down on the page” and “the mind does not think in punctuation”. Then, as he became more connected with the environmental movement, his poems began to root themselves in the Earth.
That started on the Hawaiian island of Maui. In the 1980s, Merwin found a worn-out field there and with his wife, Paula, worked to bring back the rainforest. He talked about his project in the 2014 documentary Even Though the Whole World Is Burning. “I planted these big beautiful trees almost 30 years ago.” he said, “I don’t think anybody thought they’d grow here but they look at home now.” Merwin found inspiration in his project and in his Maui home. He has kept very seriously that valuable, quiet area of loneliness.
Merwin’s Maui home, where he raised more than 2,000 trees, will all be protected as part of the Merwin Conservancy.
31.The reason why Merwin’s poetry became famous is ________.
A.its number and quality B.its focus on the environment
C.its special writing style D.its new change in punctuation
32.Merwin stopped using punctuation to ________.
A.find inspiration for writing B.make poems more useful and truer
C.create a new form of poems D.stress the importance of protecting the earth
33.What can we learn about Merwin’s project
A.It was thought to be fruitless at first. B.It helped Merwin feel at home in Maui.
C.It was the theme of the 2014 documentary. D.It inspired Merwin to protect environment.
34.The underlined word “desperation” in Para. 3 is closest in meaning to ________.
A.a state of hopelessness B.a feeling of sadness
C.a sense of responsibility D.a mood of disappointment
35.What’s this passage mainly about

Happy Rain on a Spring Night
Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms. Dawn sees saturated reds; The town’s heavy with blooms.
——Translated by Xu Yuanchong
This famous poem, with four couplets (对句), was written by Du Fu (712-770, Tang Dynasty) when he was living and farming in Chengdu. His farming experience taught him to be thankful for nature. The very first word, “Good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人化), as if the rain were smart enough to come in time for the farmer’s busy season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known.
In the third couplet, the poet describes a peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier.
Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom(盛开) after the rain.
36.The Chinese title of the poem Happy Rain on a Spring Night is “Ye Fu Ji Bei”
37.The rhyme (韵律) for this poem is ab-ab-cd-cd.
38.The word “quiet” can be used to describe the rain in this poem.
39.The sentence “With wind it steals in night” uses personification.
40.Xu Yuanchong wanted to show that he’s thankful for nature in this poem.
