(教材P44)The short story “After Twenty Years” is set in New York on a cold, dark night.
短篇小说《二十年后》以纽约的一个寒冷、漆黑的夜晚为背景。
set down        放下,记下

set up    建立,树立,搭起

句中couldn’t have done表示对过去情况的否定推测,意为“不可能做了某事”,此时的could可用can替换。
could have done 过去本可以做而实际上未做(用于肯定句)
must have done 过去肯定做过(只用于肯定句)

①I saw him just now. He couldn’t have gone abroad.

4.have sth. done结构
(教材P44) We figured that in twenty years each of us ought to have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be.
我们认为二十年后,我们俩应该有各自的命运,也应该各自发了财,不管它们将会是什么。
句中have our destiny worked out and our fortunes made为“have sth. done”结构,其中过去分词短语worked out和made分别作宾语our destiny和our fortunes的补足语。
have sth. done   让 (别人) 做某事;遭遇/经历某种不幸的事
①He walks to have his eyes examined tomorrow.
他明天想去检查眼睛。
②I must have the work finished before Sunday.

5.turn up (意外地或终于)出现;调高
