Having lived in California until 1970, my family has felt a number of earthquakes. We have been fortunate, however, to have suffered no bodily harm or property damage.
There is a website that lists all California earthquakes recorded from 1769 to the present. The site lists the dates and times as well as the magnitude (震级) and the exact location of any quake that measured more than 6.0. There are only a few quakes that stand out in my memory and, luckily, none is shown in the website. So, my personal experience with earthquakes might be considered insignificant.
There are three earthquakes that are difficult to forget. The first one was in 1955 and our oldest daughter was walking with me in our backyard in Redwood City in California. As the shaking became stronger I held her to me with one arm as I held on to one of our fruit trees with the other. All three of us (my daughter, I and the tree) shook for two or three minutes that to us felt like hours.
The second one was in 1963. Our entire family was visiting Disneyland in Southern California. The earth started to shake just as we were beginning to walk from our hotel toward the_famous_landmark.
My third experience with an earthquake was a lonely one in California. It was in my sixties and I was alone in an old church. As the building started to shake, I quickly headed for the door to go outside. I remember I said a little prayer — something like, “Help me get out of here in time, Dear Heavenly Father.” Minutes later, I was safe outside.

Restaurant chefs (厨师) and home cooks often say that we eat with our senses. First, we use our sense of sight (视力) to enjoy how a meal is presented. Our sense of touch can be important when sharing food. Next, with our sense of smell, we breathe in the delicious smell rising up from the meal. Finally, we enjoy the food with our sense of taste.
But what about our sense of hearing Does sound have an influence on the amount of food we eat?A new study answers, “Yes, it does.” That answer comes from researchers at Brigham Young University and Colorado State University in the United States. They found that hearing is important in the eating experience.
During the experiment, people wore headphones and listened to the high volume (音量) noise and low volume noise. Then researchers gave them pretzels (椒盐卷饼).People who listened to the higher volume noise ate more pretzels than those with the lower volume noise.
Ryan Elder is a professor at Brigham Young University's Marriott School of Management. He says that if people notice the sound the food makes as they eat, they may eat less. On the other hand, watching television or listening to rock music while eating can hide such noises. And this may cause you to eat more than you would normally.
When hiding the sound of eating, we take away the sense of hearing. The researchers admit that the influence may not seem like much at one meal. But over a week, a month, or a year, all that food can really add up.
So if you want to lose a few pounds, the next time you sit down for a meal, turn down the music.
5.The new study found that ________.
A.we all eat with our senses
B.people often forget the sense of hearing
C.sound influences our dining experience
D.our sense of hearing is the most important
6.In the study, people who listened to the lower volume noise ________.
A.ate fewer pretzels
B.made no eating sound
C.lost interest in any food
D.felt sick and refused to eat food
7.What can we learn from Ryan Elder
A.People should eat in a quiet way.
B.It's better to eat while watching TV.
C.Listening to rock music is not a good thing.
D.Loud music may lead to people eating more.
8.We can learn that the passage ________.
A.introduces the roles of our senses
B.tells us how to enjoy a delicious meal
C.advises us to avoid making sound while eating
D.tells us the sound of eating food can help lose weightUnit 4 Earthquakes
