Dear Neil,
I'm very glad to hear from you. You want to know about my life in Grade 8. Now I'd like to tell you something about my favourite subject. My teacher, Mr. Rivera has some ways to make us interested in his classes. I like his classes very much. Once, he gave the class homework to do — to watch the weather report on TV every night for a week. Mr. Rivera told us what to listen to as we watched each night's report. He also gave us worksheets (记录表) to fill out.
Mr. Rivera said if we looked at the large weather map carefully, we could also know about the weather. He told us that we might see a large blue line (线) or a large red line on the map. There might be both a blue line and a red line. He said that a blue line shows there is dry weather in that place. A red line shows there is wet weather. When blue and red lines meet, there may be stormy weather on the way.
On the worksheet there was a box to fill in with the expected (预料的) high temperature for the next day. There were three boxes to check if it was expected to rain, or to be cloudy, or to be windy.
I watched the weather report and filled out the worksheet each night. I found that the next day was usually a lot like the report said it would be. It was so interesting. I liked the homework.
Best wishes,
Anthony

Some students say they don't want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading is too easy.
Many experts (专家) say pleasure reading is very important for learning English. Dr. Stephen Krashen, a famous expert on learning languages, says that pleasure reading helps you learn many important things about English. Students learn more grammar and more words when they read for pleasure. They also learn more about good writing.
Reading for pleasure helps each student in a different way. Each student needs to learn something different. Pleasure reading makes it possible for each student to learn what he or she needs.
Reading for pleasure is not the same as studying. When you read for pleasure, you choose your own books, and you don't have to remember everything. There are no tests on your pleasure reading books. Pleasure reading will help you:
